XviD codec is mpeg-4 video codec. Xvid is an open-source research project focusing on video compression and is a collaborative development effort. All code is released under the terms of the GNU GPL license. The Xvid video codec implements MPEG-4 Simple Profile and Advanced Simple Profile standards. It permits compressing and decompressing digital video in order to reduce the required bandwidth of video data for transmission over computer networks or efficient storage on CDs or DVDs. Due to its unrivalled quality Xvid has gained great popularity and is used in many other GPLed applications, like e.g. Transcode, MEncoder, MPlayer, Xine and many more.

I find a lot of my older 720p/1080p xvid encodes still look excellent upscaled on a 4k TV, while the so called superior format H264/MKV's look like crap. It depends on the TV, but I tried out some 4k TV's as a test e.g LG, Hitachi and Samsung and all HD vids looked poorer quality than the Xvids. Both formats however look fine on 1080p TV's. This 4k is designed for perfect sources e.g H265,AV1 only and is not as forgiving as 2k TV's for other formats.

There not much developers can do anymore as the SAP is so restrictive. In my view 1.2.2 was about as good as it will get for Xvid,as these 1.3x builds are pretty horrible with their junk based installers. There was an Xvid 1.2.2 vaq based Win10 compiled for 32bit and works on Xp onwards, available on Xvid ru-board but that site allows no downloads anymore of late or is just a abandoned web page with details still up. The 64 bit version is here on videohelp.
If not just use Koepi's final 1.2.2 build with just normal AQ as this build looks and functions like real Xvid should! That variance aq patch(luminance masking) for me created more problems than positives overall. Koepi was disappointed ting allowing all that junk in his later 1.3 builds. Xvid 1.3.7 strip all the crap out of it and make it a 1mb installer or smaller and you've still got a great little codec!

Still a nice codec to use sometimes. Forgive my ignorance but does xvid still contain the vaq patch like earlier builds?
