VapourSynth is an application for video manipulation. Or a plugin. Or a library. It’s hard to tell because it has a core library written in C++ and a Python module to allow video scripts to be created. It came to be when I started thinking about alternative designs for Avisynth and most of it was written over a 3 month period. The software has been heavily inspired by Avisynth and aims to be a 21st century rewrite, taking advantage of the advancements computers have made since the late 90s. Requires Python!

Multithreaded – Frame level multithreading
Generalized Colorspaces – New Colorspaces can be specified at runtime
Per Frame Properties – Additional metadata can be attached to frames
Python Based – The scripting part is implemented as a Python module so you don’t have have to learn a special language

Released Portable Vapoursynth R66 does not work as at 2024.03.10, so perhaps stick with R65 until it is fixed.
Over on github there's 1+ issues raised and work is occurring on it.
No doubt an updated R66 (or greater) will remain at or near the pinnacle of FREE video processing scripting engines.
Combined with Donald Graft's free vapoursynth-enabled DG tools, including the new GPU accelerated CudaSynth featuring an expanded "DGsource" with inbuilt gpu filters, this is in a very real sense a force to be reckoned with.
Over on github there's 1+ issues raised and work is occurring on it.
No doubt an updated R66 (or greater) will remain at or near the pinnacle of FREE video processing scripting engines.

This what AviSynth should have been: cross-platform, fast, and adapted to new technology. VapourSynth is also compatible with AviSynth+ plugins and scripts.

Not for the feint of heart, vapoursynth is intended for people conversant with scripting - this tool is essentially a more modern avisynth replacement using its own python based scripting and new sets of plugins. Some "old" avisynth plugins seem forward compatible, but not all. It is NOT a gui tool although there is a separate gui if you want (see over at doom9, vsedit is its name).
Highly versatile, building on the large knowledge base and many discussions and examples over at doom9, this is a highly versatile "swiss knife" of a thing to use when you can't afford $thousands for a commercial gui tool (vapoursynth is $free).
