Great player, but has one important short coming: inability to stop playback after playing a file, just proceeds to next.

Native 3D playback was broken after 1.5.8 but it has now been fixed in the 1.6.4 nightlies.

Honestly, the MPC BE surprised me a lot, I've been using it for about 3 years now, and the most amazing thing about it is that it provides a HEVC video experience even for weak computers. Another point to highlight is that it greatly simplifies codec insertion, as it makes everything much more agile at the time of installation, just asking for a few settings, but nothing complex. Really MPC BE is among the best (if not the best) media player out there, on my computer I use it as a standard video and audio player, and secondly VLC for secondary playback (for audio adjustments and subtitles), congratulations to the developers and the efforts they make to keep the project active, thank you very much! PS: I hope you can insert as soon as possible the ability to reproduce the new audio CODEC the hE AAC.

Great application but after 1.5.8 it can no longer play 3D blu-rays properly. The layers are all out of alignment.

WTF? I've been using MPC-BE for months, then today when I loaded it I got a notification there was a new version released, so I downloaded it and ran the installer. I did NOT check the "reset settings" option, but after the update finished, the settings were reset, and a great deal of time I had spent customizing it was lost! Next time I will be sure to backup my settings before running an update, but how the hell could the installer screw something like that up??

It is strange that I can play 60 fps whole file.

But if you can not, you can stay on 1.5.8 or you can go this to reaction problem.

To longwin: I did a clean install of Windows 10 x64, having tried out Windows 11 for a few weeks. I installed version 1.6.0 with no prior installation of MPC-BE whatsoever. All files open in the same player window despite specifying "New process for every file" in the options.

Version 1.6.0 freezes when playing 60fps videos, 1.5.8 works fine.

One of the important changes in version 1.6.0:
Reworked saving of many settings. The values of these settings will not be inherited when upgrading from older versions of the player.

May be you didn't delete old ini file.

Best Video player, for audio I use latest Winamp or forked projects.
1 thing isn't working is the richt-click on the pinned task bar icon file list, if you could make that work, would be perfect; thank you.

The MPC-BE is simply my player, in terms of playing videos, especially on older computers. I have a computer whose processor is a 2.5 GHZ dual core celeron and 8 gigs of ram, I had problems playing videos, at x265 with vlc (because it crashes too much during playback, and that was too boring, it made the experience very boring and stressful), but when I downloaded the MPC-BE I was surprised by its performance, in playing a video in 10-bit x265 without crashing! O.O; Or another point and to highlight, besides its interface, which is very beautiful, is the fact that it simplifies things at the time of installation, which more faithfully than the mega codec pack (which is suitable for more experienced users, with the vast amount of decoders it has ), the MPC-BE simplifies things well, and delivers excellent and satisfying performance. Finally, here is my recommendation, for those who have older computers (not that old of course), and want to play video in x265, whether in 10 bit or not, use MPC-BE, you will be very surprised, with the performance from him. Congratulations to the developers!

Love the versatility of this player. Can be used as a super lightweight borderless ontop player that I setup in the corner of my screen to watch while I work or, with a few clicks, it's my main home cinema player with Madvr and Dolby on my 70" HDR monitor. I like software with options and this player can be setup to be as simple, minimalist or complex as you prefer. Plays everything I throw at it and works with any filters I throw into it.

Have applied Youtube-dll.exe in MPC BE folder untick internal parser and tick youtube-dll. Still cannot get youtube video to play.

Other features work OK.

paste youtube-dl.exe into MPC-BE folder and uncheck internal parser, youtube-dl must be checked below.
I tested it and it works fine.

Love this version and use it extensively. Just wish the 1280 window would shrink to a smaller size when I hit Stop.Just going blank leave a large area of my screen vovered.

@yamaneko: There were huge changes to Mouse actions, which was a lot of work for the developers. Do notjust ignore that work and do not be ignorant:
Now there is a dedicated page for all possible mouse actions like left click, double click, middle click, wheel up, wheel down and also for combining actions:
Press CTRL or SHIFT or hold right mouse button and while holding that key, you press middle mouse key or click the wheel or use wheel up down, you can also assign a command.
No need to use an old version. Click on "..." in the drop down list if you want to use a special command.

Version 1.5.6.5943.x64 seems to have lost mouse click pause/play -functionality?
I checked mouse settings and cannot see anything wrong there.
Back to an earlier version (it was 1.5.4.4850.x64).

Great player.

Reason why I did not grant all 10's is that it hangs ('not responding') when playing DVD (VIDEO_TS) from HDD and in case there is a submenu with chapters.

MPC-BE shows the main menu with titles, alright. However, at selecting a title MPC-BE hangs.
Again, this is the case when the title has a submenu with chapters.

BTW: I tried MPC-HC x64 portable (v1.9.8 x64): same issue.
I then tried VLC v3.0.11 32b portable: this player shows the chapters.

Great video player!, but the author forget about the skins. Yeah this is years 2020 we need skin very similar like potplayer because that skin is very modern one for me!!.

Hopefully we can get that skin in upcoming the future, I just can't wait to see that one!.

"Added option "Don't fill channels when upmixing"." -- Well now!!! Only took a year or so to remedy that bug! (And yes, I reported it several times, and kept getting brushed off like it wasn't an issue). LOL (And it should be called 'resampling' not 'upmixing', but I digress.) This is my favorite Videoplayer, because it is easy to use and able to enhance the videos with MadVR video filter or MPC Video engine. Both are great extensions for MPC-BE/HC. I personally prefer MPC-BE, because I like the black skin of the software. MPC-HC looks old school like Windows 7 or XP.

One of the fantastic features is playback of broken video files, play video streams from internet, create thumbnail overviews of videofiles, etc.

Thanks for this great piece of software.

When playing back a DVD, the upper cursor keys cannot be used to move the menu.

Be sure to download latest nightly (build 5318 and newer) and if you encounter any issue regardless what it is, report it on doom9 thread. The devs will fix it in some hours!! Try it.

Potplayer is crap! I tried it several times, last time is only 3 weeks ago, before I did a fresh installation of Windows 10 2004 on 2020-05-27. Because on the new installation potplayer is devitely not on my PC! I wanted to try it and it is still crap.

I also tried to report some problems over some years but I got ignored in Potplayer forum, not from MPC-BE devs. These are truely the best. And MPC-BE is Open Source, Potplayer not, which stole code from other Projects. It is also on Hall of Shame of FFMPEG.

Do not downrate a player when you do not know anything about it. There is a froum here and many will help you here including me.

In commit 5318 there was a youtube update and the link you provided plays perfectly for me in build 5330. So please stop down rating MPC-BE if you do not know better, ask instead, if you like also per PM, I will assist you.

Better PotPlayer. Its developers are constantly improving support for YouTube and this link is played there.

Just an other small help for new users: after a lot of visual tests, this is my advice for people that use Intel IGPU on Windows 8 or 10 like HD 4000 or HD 4400. Please use MPC-BE or MPC-HC as player, madVR as video renderer, but for the best compromise between quality and power use the Intel DXVA video scaler is of great quality. It's a context adaptive scaler Lanczos 4 based with high quality anti-ringing filter, Lanczos 2 or 3 taps as chroma upscaling algorithm. The pipeline is not 16 bit, but 8 bit NV12...in upscaling from 480 to 1080 the Intel DXVA scaler is sharper respect to madVR Lanczos 3 or 4 with or without anti-ringing. On downscaling Intel use Lanczos 4 without anti-ringing, good choice IMHO. Always sharper in a positive way respect to madVR Lanczos 3 or 4 downscaling. The Intel scaler also generally manage better aliasing and heavy ringing from poor compressed sources WHILE (I repeat) showing a real natural sharper image.
madVR Jinc upscaling is too soft IMHO, idem in downscaling.

Sorry, I forgot to mention, the purple screen could be a Video Renderer issue, so try different ones under Video Output in the player's settings. I haven't used Windows 7/8/8.1 for a very long time.

Always install the full video card drivers, not the ones from Windows Update. Always install the full DirectX Redist, not the web installer. If video still doesn't play, it could be a codec problem, try LAV Filters or other codecs.

MPC-BE is excelent, i always it on my computers and also on client computers... however, i am having a problem on a Windows 8.1 x86 computer. When i play a video file in this player, only the audio works, the video doesn't... it gets a purple screen.

December 2019 - Just a small update about the new version 1.5.4 x64: congrats to the developers, this new version on my Intel system (Win 8.1 x64) finally is fast and reliable as MPC-HC 1.8.8 x64 (THE video player). The loading time of the new version is improved, seeking is also faster and more reliable, the internal filters work at the same level of reliability of the LAV Filters (sometimes more). On my system the standard white theme is much faster than the dark theme and menu. Also, MPC-BE has a new video renderer named MPC Video Renderer. It's young and in development, an evolution of the EVR Custom Presenter probably; 16 bit floating point calculations, D3D11 and D3D9 paths, Bicubic, Lanczos and Catmull-Rom video scalers for now. madVR remain the higher quality Windows video renderer, without a doubt. Thanks to the russian developers, really thanks.

@flashandpan007: Well, I go by its official release page at SourceForge.net. Notice there that the last release version is 2019-04-01. And then it wasn't until 2019-10-18 there was a new nightly -- and none since then! (as of time of this post) So it sure seemed abandoned to me! Maybe they should add a "check for nightly update" command to the Help menu, but I guess now knowing they upload on videohelp and free-codecs is good for those who bother to investigate.

What are the benefits to the average user of these LAV filters, madVR etc?
Slows down the program, greater use of RAM and CPU, not easy to set up.
Totally good for mpc-be without them. (and if you set them incorrectly?)
I think the program is fine without them.

October 2019 - I use both MPC-HC and MPC-BE + LAV filters + madVR video renderer + Sanear audio renderer. Both players are mature, so they're stable, lightweight, reliable and fast, without bugs. No other players in my arsenal can collect so few crashes in all these years. Great code. On my system MPC-HC is a bit faster when dealing with files on hard-disk, but MPC-BE (with integrated youtube-dl) ,is faster when opening http url streaming videos.
p.s. mpv or PotPlayer both open http url streaming videos much faster than MPC-BE or MPC-HC (as for october 2019)

Project seems abandoned (over 6 months at time of writing this). Had to give up the software, because the audio renderer that has to be used to enable proper-sounding time stretching (MPC's own) has a bug where any stereo source is output to all 5.1 speakers when it obviously shouldn't be (any upmixing setting is definitely not on). Oh well.

Running easy & very smooth. Very good player. I wish the folder play function would recognize all video files. If you have e.g. mp4 and mkv in the folder, only the respective format is added to the playlist

Great video player. Found it after development stopped for mpc-hc.

Basic MPC-HC features are missing, like:
- Repeat option in right-click context menu
- Advanced settings section in options, so you can't, for example, disable the position remembering for music files.
- High precision timer
- The music cover art are are very small
- Apparently the PNG screenshots come with some compression, since the file size is much smaller than the MPC-HC one

And I leave a suggestion to make a download package including LAV Filters + MadVR + XySubFilter for those interested. Furthermore, it would be nice a feature to increase/decrease the subtitle size with keyboard shortcuts.

My only complaint about Media Player Classic - BE is that I can't make it my Default Video player in Win10.Propably more a fault with Win10.Otherwise I now prefer it to Media player classic.

The best player for windows I use it on 7 and 10 it has build in support for almost all media formats but it can use external codecs
I've been using it for years with no issue I use the portable on 7 and the installer on 10
I've tried a lot of players but I keep coming back to mpc-be with the death of mpc-hc this is the only player I recommend

I have a strange problem.
I cant use the program nothing happens when i want to see a movie with the program.
Not even with MPC-HC.
For the moment i can only use VLC
Any ide how to solwe it so MPC-BE can be my player ?

Hdr support is automatically enabled

Open a video with HDR to test another player to test colors will fade
Turn on the same HDR video (MPC-BE) and you'll see the colors are vibrant and realistic

4-22-17 (MPC-BE Updated Review)
(MPC-BE) and Light Alloy are the only video players that play my higher HD video playlists without videos stuttering and freezing as with all other over-rated players tried like Potplayer,mplayer,Virtual DJ, 5k player,Cross DJ, Zoom players etc.
To me Light alloy player plays better than MPC-BE player, light alloy also has more video audio features , options, than MPC-BE player, plus it's developer (unlike most other video programs) actually responds to user inquiries, most of these other players , have poor documentation, and mostly non-existence support etc.
I am using LIGHT ALLOY player along with my (WINTEL W8) WINDOWS MINI PC (WIN 10 HOME- 2GB RAM)- 1.33GHZ)-
(INTEL HD GRAPHICS-ULTRA 4K VIDEO PLAYBACK)

MPC-BE, still missing, adequate documentation and support, also some super hot features:
1. (Top Feature request it needs) A (Video and audio crossfade effect), or video fade out video options, that many many people are turning to, to mix and transitions to video clips,and play music videos playlists smoothly.
This feature needed mainly at end of video downloads and MP4 clips playlist, so do not have to use an addtl editor program,to edit and re-encode just to fade out videos at end, instead of all cut or trimmed videos ending abrubtly, which looks terrible.
Even had to use of some internal or external effects or plugins to crossfade video and audio.
Most of these other over-rated video players that want you to pay, but they still cannot even do very basic video and audio crossfading, or even video downloading. I would never pay for these other over rated players out there.

2. Need Downloader with video trimmer option,

3. Lastly, of course and addtl video and audio enhancements, video and video karaoke and playlist features, are always best.

First sight love! :D

I used to use MPC-HC (after getting tired of VLC due to low performance in my computer) and I also loved it, but then I saw this one, with its Seek Time feature and all and... well, I instantly noticed that MPC project could have simply reached the perfection to me and, although it goes without saying, I was right :). So I think I'll continue using it for a looong time, or I hope so at least!

I love this and use it as a go to video player even though i bought cyberlink pdvd and had purchased it for years up to version pdvd12ultra.
i like this mpc-be and use the beta versions for some reason. maybe to check out the advances first on the way to the next stable release. almost every beta release, though, has been stable as can be-just adds functionality.

My number 1 choice!

Everything better than MPC-HC, except MPC -HC has better "Keys" assignment for Zoom Levels or maybe the "Keys" Zoom assignment of MPC-BE are not correct?

Example:
MPC-HC ALT+1 Zoom=50% ALT+2 Zoom=100% ALT+3 Zoom=200% ALT+4 Zoom=Auto-Fit (Always 125%, which is perfect)
MPC-BE ALT+1 Zoom=50% ALT+2 Zoom=100% ALT+3 Zoom=200% ALT+4 Zoom=Auto-Fit (Always 100%, NOT useful, same as ALT-2 or duplicate!)

How/where does one submit a bug report. 1.4.3 svn 5182-beta has a report tool that attaches the report to a text-based email (which fails to attach it's screenshot) but places no recipient.

Thanks for the info szl, so if this behaviour is a intentional it probably will not change, meaning that to play some files you need more hardware requirements, would be nice to have an option to disable the full keyframe scan, just for those who have old pcs.
Another things, I found that mpc-be cannot play well some interactive menus (ie. the simpsons T2 R4), no problem with the other player mentioned above.
Otherwise I would like to rectify my previous score, I didn't pay much attention and thought that the score was from 1 to 5 not to 10, I really like the program (specially the search preview and the gui) but at this moment I still find more stable mpc-hc and potplayer.

TGB, Yes, when the mpc-be opens "broken mkv", he consumes more resources than mpc-hc. This is because: when opening this file is full scan "key frames" and built a full index, which allows with a high accuracy to navigate within the file and accurately display playback duration. mpc-hc and lav splitter is doing less well, that negatively affects navigation "broken mkv".

Does not play well broken mkv (files partially extracted from rars), it consume more resource than mpc-hc and potplayer when it plays and seek in some flv files.

Speex audio is NOT working for me!

Both MPC-HCx64 and MPC-BEx64 are now supporting Speex audio (usually live stream FLV cam video), MPC-HCx64 (released last month) is working perfectly, but MPC-BEx64 (just released today) is NOT working (always sounds like a grumpy old man in SLOW motion).


W7x64 with portable version of MPC-HCx64/MPC-BEx64.

Thanks very much. This is such an easy solution, and since MPC-HC already includes the two files in question, it makes me wonder why the devs don't pack them with the 64-bit portable version, too.

Anyway, adding the two files solved the problem, and even the files that had crashed it completely now run fine. I plan to start looking into the player's functions more carefully. It seems stable and well-programmed.

Just one more question: in "Options" -> "Miscellaneous", what do I have to do to get the "Color controls" to work?

@ jjg: MPC-BE should "need" just two files from the DirectX9 package, d3dx9_43.dll and D3DCompiler_43.dll. Download the portable versions of MPC-HC, unzip, and copy those files to MPC-BE's folder. Certainly things could be much easier if Microsoft didn't like to complicate things needlessly ^_~ Besides, the 32-bit should run fine in a 64-bit system.

Thanks for all the updates/improvements (especially the Speex audio!).

Since I last commented, MPC-BE has been my #1 player, replacing the powerful SMPlayer.

#1 MPC-BE
#2 VLC
#3 SMPLayer

Dealing with 27 TB of video files, MPC-BE by far is my favorite player! It's just way smoother/quicker than MPC-HC. I can pretty much do what I want with this player e.g settings etc with one exception, I wish there is an option for always 125% "Zoom" level (both VLC and SMPLayer have this option/settings).

So far, this is a loser for me on Win 7x64. I'm trying to use the 64-bit portable version.

Whenever I try to open a movie from my HD, I get an error message that says my version of DirectX is outdated, and I need to install a version after June 2010 or something like this.

I have DirectX version 11 with all the latest updates. Why am I being told that DirectX is out of date?

Nonetheless, most movies play, although a couple of mp4 movies crashed the program.

In any case, as I've said. so far it doesn't seem to like my system very much.

Favorable comments led me to try MPC_BE. Media Player Classic Home Cinema(MPCHC)has two persistent issues for me:

1) Seeking, particularly in Flash files. Hit a spot on the timeline and the audio continues, but the video often freezes. It might or might not "catch up".

2) Playback of edited H.264 transport stream captures (using tsSniper). When a cut is reached, behavior is similar to the above.

MPC_BE substantially solves these problems for me. I use the 64 bit version in my HTPC, and the 32-bit version in my VM. Seeking is much better and playback of edited TS files is also much better. Now, there may only be a tiny "blip" in playback past the cut. Not noticeable really if I didn't know where the cut is and wasn't watching for it.

In other ways, MPC_BE is very similar to MPCHC, which is fine.

No doubt this player isn't perfect, but I'm so pleased I'm giving it 10s across the board.

Tested it awhile ago. I would dare to say that this is beyond excellent. It's like your HC, but just better. It even shows album art while HC still can't do that until now. The only drawback I can think of is it's name, it sounded like an illegally pirated version or something. =V

I agree to the last poster's comment: I like this better than MPC-HC, too.
So far it seems capable of doing what MPC-HC does (and it does that well!), it's as fast and lightweight, but the skin/theme is much nicer to look at!
Also in the toolbar at the bottom of the video two buttons are integrated to change audio or subtitle streams. Very convenient!

And the best thing - for me, anyway - it plays the xsub found in files with the .divx extension and displays them flawlessly on the computer screen!
So far no other player does this, except VLC. (DiVX' own player also does, which I won't use. VLC is out for me so far, since its h264 playback tends to be jerky.) I have quite a number of DVDs backed up in .divx-format, since the subs look fine that way played on a standalone dvd-player, which is mpeg4-capable.

And perhabs the most endearing thing about MPC-BE: It uses a differently coloured icon for each file-type (if you associate video/audio files with it)! I longed for such a function in all the other 'big ones' out there for a long time!

I dunno...something is wrong with me:), I actually like this one better than the MPC-HC.

The last time I used MPC was like 7 or 8 yrs ago and now the MPC-BE is very good/close to excellent..the fast seeking in WMV/FLV is much faster than MPC-HC.

The latest VLC 2.0.4 is also superb (significantly better than the 2.0.3), PotPlayer is also a very promising Player and last but still one of the BEST is SMPlayer (no body can beat the "." frame by frame feature and menus customization of this player).

For me**, SMPlayer for 1080p MP4/MKV, 720p and lower MP4/MKV, FLV, AVI VLC 2.0.4. Will definitely try to replace MPC-HC with MPC-BE.

Being a long time MPC user I just came across this updated version and tried it. It works great and also has YouTube streaming support.
