In different video file tests magazines compare them with Netflix VMAF score, PSNR and SSIM value. This is a useful indicator for quality.
I use this great software to see, which settings and bitrates for video encoding give me the best quality results with my CPU or GPU encoding (h264/h265/AV1). So you can choose the best connection of video quality and speed.

Sometimes a GPU setting deliver more quality, need more time and use a higher bitrate to encode. So the advantage of more quality will not be better, if the bitrate increase to a higher value.

Furthermore you can see the bitrate usage of different video files to check the effiency of the used codec.
I did some comparisons with h264, h265 and av1 software and hardware encoding. Then I checked the VMAF, SSIM and PSNR score.
With the highest quality settings the nvidia gpu h265 encoder deliver the best quality/speed for encoding of videos.
X264 encoder ist slower and the visual quality stay behind the nvidia h265 encoder.
SVT-AV1 encoder is a powerful encoder, but the used time is 2-4 times higher (preset 5 - Intel 8700k - 16GB RAM).
