“DREADFULL” THIS MACHINE IS SO BAD IT SHOULD BE BANNED!!
The recorder heats up so much it actually distorts disks making them unreadable
I have read the comments from other users on here and can only say they must
Work for pioneer or are new to the burning dvd scene.
This recorder has so many flaws I don’t know where to begin
Here is a few
1. firmware is bugged (and the manufacturer knew it and released it anyway)
2. software is very basic that comes with it
3. reading times for discs are not the same as stated by manufacturer(much slower in reality)
4. heats up so much it distorts disk(it worse defect)
5. has huge problems recording div x to dvd format
I have now taken my back after trying in several top end machines AND IT WAS NOT JUST THE CASE OF A LEMON I exchanged 3 times my recorder and each time the same problems persist.
Anyone buying this machine beware you will destroy disk time and time again and if you don’t destroy them, then try finding a dvd player that is totally compatible with it.
This machine is truly rubbish.
I now have a Vivastar and a Sony both do what there meant to do that’s record dvds and play back in any dvd player I put them in they don’t destroy disk and there firmware is excellent.
I have been a software engineer now for 20 years and know what I am talking about when it comes to software.
So please pioneers don’t insult customers with the rubbish you tack onto the machine.

I purchased the Pioneer 104 from www.prestoshopper.com early Sept 2002 for $265.00. Five business days later it arrived at my door. I’ve made 15 burns in the last three weeks with no problems. I’m using RapidScape DVD-R Media (Unbranded) $34.00 for 25 pack on spindle also purchased from prestoshopper. The drive came with MYDVD3.5, PowerDVD XP and Veritas Record Now.

I create my home movies (Cannon Optura PI camera) with Premier 6.0, render them in TMPGEnc V. 2.5.44.152 using the same settings suggested in the tutorial supplied by http://pwp.netcabo.pt/0165394101/TMPGEnc_Template.html

I use Nero 5.5.9.9 for burning archive files and made use of the Sonic MyDVD 3.5 supplied with the Pioneer drive to burn my movies for viewing. I tried the free trial version of Ulead DVD Movie Factory but it kept crashing to the desktop when I put chapters in the menu. Burn time of one hour to fill a DVD-R disk is not a problem for me. The movies play just fine on my Pioneer DV-440 and Mintek 1600 DVD players. Playing movies on my computer with PowerDVD XP supplied with the drive works good also.

I estimate the picture quality of the DVD burns %10 to %15 better than picture quality of my SVCD burns. Storing those huge Premier video files on the 4.7 gig DVD disk is a major benefit for me.

My system basics are ABIT KG-7 Raid, AMD XP 1.7, 1 Gig Crucial ECC 2100 DDR, ASUS V7700 GeForce 32mb video, drives include C:40Gig IBM 75GXP, D:WD 110 Gig BB model and E:WD 120 Gig BB model. Also use the Plextor 16/10/40, 1394 card supplied with Studio DV and the OS is Win 2000 Pro.

I am very satisfied with my purchase of the Pioneer 104 drive.

OK then, bought mine 2 months ago and it still works ok.

The not so important thing about it what sucks is the CD-R/W writing possibilities, especially for DAO....but hey, for that we better take a CD-Recorder....hehe

The next thing that is not very nice is the HEATING problem with this drive.

The 3rd thing is the not really good firmware who lets us write only 1x speed on most media....but it could be written with 2x speed if Pioneer would just include a small patches in their firmware for newer media.

The good thing is that it can read my DVD+RW with no problems!
Nice.

But, all in all, I will buy the new from SONY and have fun.

;)

Pioneer Warns of DVD Recorder Woes
Wed Sep 18, 5:06 PM ET

LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) - Pioneer Electronics Inc. is warning consumers who use its popular DVD recorders to download and apply an important software repair to prevent permanent damage that could occur when recording video using new high-speed discs.

Pioneer said it was "extremely important" that consumers apply the software repair, which it made available free on its Web site and by mail. Without it, Pioneer indicated its drives could freeze when using high-speed blank DVDs, allowing the laser within the unit to permanently damage an important optical lens.

The problem can occur when the drives use newer, blank four-speed DVD-R discs and two-speed DVD-RW discs, the company said.

Pioneer said the glitch affects its computer DVD recorders and two stand-alone DVD recorders. Pioneer has sold in the United States about 1 million of its computer recorders and about 10,000 stand-alone recorders.

The affected models are: DVR-7000; PRV-9000; DVR-A03; DVR-103; DVR-A04 and DVR-104.

Pioneer also warned that some computer makers include Pioneer drives labeled as a "Superdrive" with their systems, including Compaq Computer Corp., Apple Computer Co. and Sony Electronics Inc.

Had mine about a month writes ok - no probs in that respect, keep seeing comments regards only writing at 1x speed. In my win98 setup it writes at 2x speed a full disc in just over 30 mins -excellent. In my winMe setup it will only write at 1x speed, as 98 works ok will stick with that. I have had no problems backing up my dvds -so far!!
I am however still having problems with my mpeg-2 capture and conversion - no point capturing an excellent picture just to convert to vcd/svcd - I will keep working on this until I have a formula that works and I will post it here.

Out of all the DVD-R's and CD-R's that I've burnt with this drive, only a couple have been coasters. Alot of people talk about speed lacking on this drive, however, I don't see what the big deal is. I can right at around 1.4x DVD which is the same as 8x on my CD-R. This drive is a solid performer and compatability is also its strength. I purchased this drive from Essential Computer Inc. for $248 just a few weeks ago. It's not worth getting the 104 drive (Retail package) because the software is not worth the extra cost (and you get just a few blank discs). All-in-all this drive is well worth the money, even if you just use it to back up data from your computer (89 cents for 4.7 gigs of data storage!). I have backed up a dozen DVDs and am amazed how perfectly the DVD-Rs work on my standalone player. (I have the Toshiba 2800, which I also recommend!). Either buy this drive or wait a long time before the next big jump in technology happens.

The OEM version, DVR-104, reads DVD+R no problem. Tried it with a disc wrote by a Philips DVD recorder (DVDR-980) and it read the disc and ripped the files a treat!

I bought the Pioneer DVR-A04 last week for £200. Setup was very straight forward and within ten minutes from opening the box, I was dragging and dropping onto my DVD media! I couldn't believe it was that simple. I haven't had any kinds of problems yet. I haven't tried burning a full DVD disc yet. I am looking forward to doing it in the next couple of days when I get some free time.

I wanted to try writing onto DVD media as quickly as possible so I did not waste my time searching for the cheapest media. I just went to my local store and bought two TDK DVD-R discs and two TDK DVD-RW discs. As expected, they were not that cheap, £3.75 for the DVD-R and £5.00 for the DVD-RW. Obviously I can't go on burning my money by burnig DVDs like this, so I am going to search for a cheaper media to write on.

Great. Bought the 104 and everything works fine with burning however when i burn to a DVD-R the Desktop(Samsung TV DVD Player)plays 20 seconds and starts jumping to various scenes. When recorded to a
DVD-RW the disk works fine in the Samsung TV DVD player. Can anyone explain this. Grateful for any response. steve826@hotmail.com

I bought the bare-bones Pioneer DVR-104 OEM version for 240 GBP from Scan in the UK. They had bundled it with 5 Pioneer DVD-R disks and a copy of Nero 5.5 on one of their "Today Only" offers. I also bought a single DVD-RW disk ("Mirror" brand, never heard of them before).

I've never owned or used any kind of writer before, so I was completely new to this. I installed it as a Secondary Master IDE device and Windows XP Pro recognised it straight away. I'd read about the DMA problem here on VCDHELP and so disabled it before I started to use it. (Incidently, my machine is a Athlon XP 2100+, Asus A7V333, 512Mb RAM and 120Gb HD).

I downloaded TMPGENC and Ulead DVD MovieFactory. I encoded any old (small) AVI file I could lay my hands on and used MovieFactory to burn it to my DVD-RW disk. I chucked it into my set-top DVD player (Pioneer DV-717) and it played first time, no problem.

I haven't tested it on any other set-top players, but then I bought the DVR-104 with a reasonable amount of confidence that my DV-717 would cope with the disks. Having said that, I also knew that DVD-R/RW is more compatible than DVD+R/RW.

The burning speed isn't brilliant, but I knew how fast it was before a bought it and I'm not bothered about the speed. I'm happy to leave it to run and go do something else instead.

I've since experimented with TMPGENC and MovieFactory and had excellent results. I use the single RW disk to test my projects before burning to a DVD-R.

Awesome.

I bought the 104 in PriceLess computers in Glasglow 5 months for £230 ago and give it thumbs up.I use Monarch DVD-R £1 & DataSafe DVD-RW £2.50p disks, which are cheap & work well. The disks play on almost all set top DVD players that I have tried them on. But the 104 will not work with 3.7gb disks, but who cares. It's a pitty that the format don't stik to DVD-R DVD-RW as it works fine. I used lots of software to creat my DVDs such as DVD Movie Factory, MGI Videowave 5, Sonic MY DVD & Ulead VideoStudio 6. But find Videowave & Sonic Ny DVD the best. I have my 104 DVDr installed on a 1900+ with 512mb DDR, 80 & 60 Gig Hard Drives. I use it only for burning my VHS and DV fottage from my DV Camcorder onto DVD and it works a treat.

Got the Pioneer DVR-A04 a week ago.
So far absolutly no problems with anything!
I am taking old 8mm and VHS tapes and making DVD movies.
Here is my setup:
OS: Windows XP pro
AMD Athlon 1700 XP
256MB DDR RAM
DVR-A04 as master on IDE channel 2 (IDE channel set on DMA if available)
2 HD's on channel 1 (20gig, 40gig)

I have been using DVD-PRO DVDRW and OPTODISK DVDRW media from supermediastore.com This media I have tested in my sony DVD, rosen DVD(minivan) and my XBOX. So far it works in all. Sometimes I have to re-insert the DVD into the XBOX to get it to work but it usually works by the 3rd dry and always plays completely.

The DVD burn software (MYDVD 3.5) is basic but seems to work well. Sonic I hear is comming out with MyDVD 4.0 soon with better features that are missing such as photo album. It does not seem to do audio compression so you have to lower the quality of captures to fit a 2hr tape onto a DVD.

My longest video capture was 1hr 45mins and burnt in about 1 hour even though I used 1x media.

This appears the cheapest, most compatible writer on the market.

For u Canadians, go to www.eclipse-computing.com and they sell 90 dvd-r blanks for £59 + postage.

For re-encoding mpeg2 dvds - there is only one option. CCE 2.5SP. The best by far and it's FAST!

bought this dvd burner... works great. i have one problem and i dont thinks its with the drive. i like to make svcd movies and ive used nero, and pinnacle to auther my cd's they play fine in my comp,, but do not work with stand-alone players..well it does with the pioneer players but not other players. why is this... these playes say they can read dvd-r, cdr and cdrw...I would like to make a movie about my town and sell them...on svcd as the price of dvd-r are to expensive in canada $10.00 to $17.00 dollers. I would do vcd but i find the quality is horid.. they look like crap. to blocky.. i cap in avi or through my firewire then convert to vcd. but like i said it looks like crap.. any help in cleaning up the video would be great.

bought it a week ago, awesome drive 8), backed up 50 gb of mp3 files
no problem, also i luv the ease of makeing a dvd with Sonic dvd, just import the mpeg files any format, mpeg 2 mpeg 1 any size any bit rate,
slap in a blank and go to bed.
u have a finished dvd in the morning, plays great in my toshiba standalone sd 3750, where vcd used to skip and become out of sync etc,

recommend this drive highly, although i havnt used the other drives on the market.

the only problem i have is blanks are so expensive in canada, i got some on ebay for 2 dollars each , the cheapest i can find in stores are 14.99 each

Got the DVR-104 for 315 EUR and I'm happy with it.

Burned DVD-R and DVD-RW media play in DVD-ROM Pioneer A03S and A106 and standalone player Mustek DVD56S. Mustek DVD-300 DVD-R only.

Tried different media from Pioneer, Intenso, Datatrack, Princo, TDK. Burned with DVDit 2.5 Le and Nero 5.5.9.0. All worked fine.

The cheapest I found so far are Primedisk 10 pieces for 19,99 EUR.

The only disadvantage, there is no SCSI version of the drive.

One of the most impressive bits of kit I've ever bought !
Installed and running (Win98SE) in no time*. Mine was supplied with Nero and Ulead Movie Factory and I've yet to burn a 'coaster'.
I use TMPGEnc to encode, as the built-in encoder with MF was not very good.
The resultant DVD-R plays fine in my Sony DVD player, and seems OK with other people's units.
Also made several DVD-ROM and they seem to work fine in all PC's that I've tried so far.

Also seems to burn CD's quite well, which is a bonus.

*first test burn with DVD-RW failed right at the end - I checked another forum, disabled DMA on the DVD-Writer channel and all was fine.

Bought the OEM version, install it, and no problems yet, I started and have burned manny dvd's with the dvd-rw, to make sure i was doing it right, it took me a day playing with software to get it right, but it's great. I love this unit. The only thing it keep it from being a 10 it's the lack of faster speed writting, 2x it's not fast enough. I know, I know, it's picky, but that's my opinion.

Got the DVR-A04, and XP found it no problem. But no software (Nero, DVDWorkshop) would recognize it. The Pioneer website was no help. But after getting some tips from the VCDHelp forum, I enabled recording in the drive properties, and upgraded Nero to 5.5.9. Now it works great.

I don't use any of the bundled software.

Of course, I'm spoiled by my HP DVD200i, so the Pioneer seems a little slow. But the disks are cheaper, and God Only Knows what format may win, ultimately. So, I'll probably do test disks on DVD+RW, then do final burns to DVD-R.

Great drive. No problems. Both DVD-R and DVD-RW play fine in my Panasonic DVD player. Varabile-bit-rate MPEG-2 with a max rate of 8000 and an average rate of 6000 creates a very good quality DVD. Don't waste your time with fixed rate compression. Ulead's MovieFactory is a great product. Much better than Sonic MyDVD that comes with the drive.

i've had my DVR-A04 for three months now and have a problem neither my computer tech nor pioneer has been able to solve. i'm using it for copying only - no 'on the fly' copies. i'll get 4 good burns, then the next burn crashes. or i'll get two crashes then one good burn. no rhyme or reason here. these bad burns occur anywhere from 5% to 97% of the burn. when it works, i'm very happy with the results, but would not want to count the number of $5 coasters in the trash can here. i'm getting a new computer and will see what happens when it's installed in the new one......although the one i'm using now is less than 2 yrs old. will have to reserve rating for now.

Well I got this because of some comments I read here and because I wanted to burn and watch some DVDs. Well since I got it I have wasted $15 worth of DVD-Rs. Whenever I try to burn to a DVD-R it gives me an error right when it starts and the DVD is wasted. Anyone know what is wrong with this thing. By the way I am using Digital Media DVD-R's could that be the problem? I don't know but I have yet to burn anything with this thing and its pissing me off.
