Very nice unit, bought it in Ireland, I would still keep another cdrw alongside in another bay, don't expect to do any ' exotic ' back-ups with this unit --> (CloneCD etc..) paired with a Lite-On.. now there's a team to have! ;)

I find compared to DVD-Roms, its slow to rip a movie (around 2x - 3x), I have DMA enabled, and its on the secondary cable as a slave, under the Lite-On.. that's not really a problem, you're assured a quality rip, but, not an experience for the habitual Ritalin user..

All you need is Nero to start you off, I'd encourage anyone to buy OEM and head straight off to AHead's website to download Nero Burning Rom, that's all you need for most tasks, combined with some fine pickings from vcdhelp.com.. ;)

Has a fan at the back, runs fairly hot, but considering what it is actually doing, shouldn't be a problem with a adequately ventilated case..

Forget DVD+R and all that malarkey --> look at the price of the blank media ffs! enough said, I think DVD-R is here to stay, for the moment..

Nice drive, just for backing up 4 and a half gigs of data securely to a DVD-R is worth the money alone, being able to reference 8 CD's of data from one disc...

Get it, go, get one now.

Works really fine.
No problem at all even with very low priced dvd-r dvd-RW

exceptions:
- In cdr mode:
It is able to determine the size of over 650 Mb cdr but he locks the burning at exactly 650. No overburning possible.

- In dvd-R & W mode
With very low priced dvd he is not able to determine the type of dvd inserted dvd-r or dvd-rw. He sees the media randomly as a dvd-r or dvd-rw.
Too bad because often, when you order dvd-R and dvd-rw, nothing is written on the box that let you image the type of media you use.
And this does not depend on the software Instant dvd or nero
And the same occurs for the size determination, you have to force the software to write it in case he sees a 3.96Go

Replaced my old CD Read-only drive with the A04 ($275). Very smooth upgrade. I have MS 98 SE, 800 Mhz system with 2 - 20 GB hard drives. Sony Dv camera with firewire port. I use Studio 7, tmpgenc for mpeg2's (good software) VBR setting, 6000Mps setting, MyDvd (supplied with A04) works good for making the DVD menus and importing the mpeg2's. Burned video onto Pioneer DVD-R no problem. Beautiful picture! Plays fine in my Daewoo 5700 (SAMs club $79.00). Note that a DVD is advertised as 4.7 GB but is really 4.3 GB then subtract the file system required for the actual DVD format. Overall, this drive reads and writes the advertised formats very well. I am very pleased with it.

The 104dvd writer is now available from 121cdr.co.uk for under £200

Most of the problems i read in the comments section involved the dvd burning software doing a lousy job at converting *.avi files. The easiest way to convert these is tmpgenc. I have also found MyDVD to do the best at encoding the video source to make a dvd and that pinnacle makes the coolest menus, if only it could encode worth a darn. I like the Pioneer drive but i only wish it went a bit faster. I got spoiled with the Sony DUR110

I purchased this drive about two weeks ago. It came with B's software. I use Vegas Video http://www.sonicfoundry to edit my videos and then I use DVD complete by Dazzle to write my work to DVD. This combination ROCKS!! Absoluley ZERO problems. I love this drive. I have played DVD's created this way on 10 different players. All worked fine. I used DVD-r disks from CompUSA the $3.99 each ones. They all worked. I use the B's software for data storage only.

After reading so many excellent reviews for the Pioneer DVD-A04, I bought external firewire version from firewiredirect.com.
It arrived yesterday and have spent the 18 of the last 24 hours trying to burn a dvd. Tried InstantDVD (which comes with writer), Nero 5590, Ulead Movie Factory... and all three complain about buffer underrun or SCSI error (!) even at simulation.
I am running WinXp Pro (is that a problem ?) on Asus A7V266-E motherboard with Athon 1800 processor with 256 MB DDR...
The firewire card is from Pinnacle (2 years old - I got with Studio DV)... I am running a RAID array of 80 GB (2 x 40 WD 7200 RPM ATA 100) ?

Any insite will be appreciated...

Thanks,
Anix

As for menus:

Yall will need some program like Nero Vision Express, Sonic DVDit, or Ulead DVD Workshop. They will assist in making menus.

As far as testing burnings go, I'm gonna have to give this drive a 10 because of the VCD---->DVD, SVCD---->DVD, and Divx---->DVD all work in three different set top dvd players. And the dvr-104 cooperates really well with Ulead DVD Workshop. I'm able to slap in 6 hours of VCDs into a single DVD and play it back on my dvd player.

Yes yes, this makes us lazy but it shows that the discs that the dvr-104 spits out are kosher for the dvd players.

You should be able to use this with a Toshiba SD200. It works with my SD100 no problem if you use datasafe generation 3 DVDR media written using VOB InstantDVD.

I recently purchased a CenDyne package that contained the DVR-104. I have only created 1 disc but it worked the first time with no problems in both my PC and my Pioneer home player. Gotta hand it to Pioneer.

I can't say a 10 yet because I haven't run enough tests yet. But so far I made a few back ups of my Region 1 and Region 3 DVDs and they play fine in an Apex 1200 and Apex 3201 and Pioneer DV-525 DVD player. I used some cheapo branded DVD-Rs found at the local electronic shop.

Not to mention these films and other films that i created from home video also work in my Playstation 2.

Data burns well. If only Pioneer can jack up the speeds of burning data. 2x may be pretty fast for DVD-Rs but it still takes a chunk of time waiting for it to finish burning.

Also it's a pretty good CD Burner but it doesn't really like CD+G discs that well. But I guess it's main point is that it's a DVD writer and most of it is to concentrate as a DVD writer. Overall its good enough to make me happy with it for awhile.

Just got this drive installed (no problems at all...)
Made a backup of a movie using Nero 5.5.9 and a cheap Ritek DVD-R ($1.70)-worked like a charm in my GE1101P stand alone.

I bought this machine based on the excellent experiences other have reported here and I belived I made the right choice. However, maybe not everyone will find it easy or be lucky enought to start using it immediately. It burns CDs and DVDs perfectly if all you want to do is store data. But so far I haven't succeeded in burning even a small 100Mb video Clip. Have tried Ulead's DVD Factory and MyDVD, and got error with both. With Ulead's software it apparently burns all the material but reports the error and aborts the operation. The result is a DVD that plays back only 50 minutes.
Another complaint is that now I cannot burn SVCDs with VCDEasy. If I want to do it I have to use my old CD writer. VCDEasy does not recognize the drive.
I won't rate it right now until I solve all these problems. So far I'm really frustrated.

I've had this little gem for a few months now and offer these comments to those in the market. First, brief system info: 1.8 GHz PIV, 1 Gig ram, 80 Gig primary drive (7200), 60 Gig secondary drive (7200), 40 Gig USB2 storage drive (5200), Pinnacle A/D-D/A capture card. Second, vid apps: Ulead DVD Movie Factory, Studio 7 and every imaginable graphics program you can think of. The 104 came OEM with my machine. Workflow: capture, edit and convert to AVI from analog source with capture card using Studio 7. Render MPEG2 chapters for preparation for DVD Authoring. Author DVD with Movie Factory and burn. Result: perfection. The results are the same regarding digital video capture from dig-cam or web-cam. Creating MPEG2 slideshows from still images are a snap. Data storage is effortless. I have yet to rip DVDs (next project). DVD-R media burned with this unit is payable on all machines I've tested. I am very happy with this product and based on my experience with it, would recommend it.

Got the White Box 104 Kit from www.avlogic.com for $250, came with cables and Nero/MyDVD/PowerDVD software. Installed without incident, works fine, although the DVD-R that came with it (Optodisc) is only a 1x disc per Pioneer's system.

DVD-R and DVD-RW play perfectly on my stand-alone Pioneer 343 and PC Pioneer 104S.

Highly reccomended.

Love my Pioneer DVR-104. I spoke with the guy at ESBuy.com, who said they have heard the release date for the next model (A05?) will be October. It will be 4x. Glad I didn't wait. Having too much fun using it now!

So far I haven't been able to test this drive out with DVD-Rs because I haven't found anywhere that sold any. But I am able to play my region 1, 2, 3, and 5 DVDs with no issues and the RPC1 firmware has been released.

For those that are interested:
http://kickme.to/dvd105s

There will be instructions on how to patch the firmware so that the drive will be come regionless and you won't ever have to worry about how many chances you have left to change the regions.

Well, this is the built-in DVD burner in my Apple iMac's SuperDrive. It works very well. All of the discs I have burned with iDVD2 worked with all of the players my family and friends have (Sony, Panasonic, Audiovox, Genica). I have also been able to burn DVD-RW discs, but it's a hassle trying to erase the whole disc before you can write to it again.

Had mine for two weeks now. It just works, every DVD I make, even using the cheaper media, plays back fine. It works with Nero 5.5.8.2 and Ulead DVD Movie Factory no problems. I am in the UK using PAL sw. It works fine with svcd - vcd - cd - cdr -cdrw even mini dvd - no problem.

Works on XP too! Very impressed.

You have to patch the firmware. Search on google for the Pioneer Region Free DVD firmware page.

>to all owners of Pionner DVR-A04: I intend to buy one, but I do have one question about the region that it'll be locked after the 5th change. Is there a possibility to lock it on region "0"?? This matters to me a lot, 'cause I'll be recording at least in 02 regions... Thanks, Roberto Blondt
