| I've been using my A04 (retail box) for almost six months and I figured I would now review it. Considering the format (recordable dvd) is still in its infancy, these units are very reliable. I have found Ulead DVD Movie Factory is a nice program for basic authoring and menus, while Nero seems to be the best for consistant burning. 1X is the best for writing reliable discs on cheap media that won't have problems with most players. Recently I flashed the firmware to 1.31, which allows burning at 2x with "Ritek" media (gold top, purple bottom, no printed brand name). This works well, and these discs are cheap, under $50 for a 50 pack. I was interested in the new line of 4x writers, but there really doesn't seem to be media that can handle that speed yet, and who know if they will play reliably on my dvd player. I think that the A04 will be great for at least a couple of years until the formats get settled and the prices come down. I have never regretted going for the Pioneer! | Got the retail version of this drive and I couldn't be happier. I have not made a coaster yet and it handles everything I throw at it. | Bought this burner about 3 months ago, easy instalation, up and going in a matter of minutes. However after trying an array of burning software they all would only allow 1X burning. After numerous attempts at contacting pioneer, I finally recieved a response. Which stated the drive has a firmware bug, the firmware must be updated or the included software could cause damage. I recieved this email too late, my drive is toast, it would not recognize any disk I place in it. In a story of "The pen is mightier than the sword" I wrote pioneer threatening legal dispute. Pioneer has since replaced the drive with a fresh one. My opinion of this drive, had I do buy it again? I would not! Junk! singed - Pissed at Pioneer! | Just bought it for $260 (shipping included) from http://www.shopharmony.com I used their included pioneer dvd-r and dvd-rw. The dvd-r burned at 2x and the DVD-RW burns at 1x (as stated on the box). Yes if burning a file smaller then 1gb it takes about 10min to write the lead out. Not a big problem just an annoyance. 2x takes about 25min to burn 4gb. I burned over the DVD-RW 5 times now. Burned test DVD movie rips. After some tinkering with ifoedit. I got both changing lanes and spiderman to work on my Sony DVD-NS715P. Very happy! | I have been using the OEM version of the Pioneer DVR-A04 installed in a Cyclone IEEE1394 Firewire external drive enclosure for about 2 months. This drive works very well. The only problem I have had is a buffer underrun error. I updated the firmware and switched to Nero burning software and the problem went away. I have also discovered that if you are burning a small amount of data, less than 1 GIG, the unit seems to hang up during the lead out session of the burn. For some reason, it takes about 20 minutes to complete the lead out. The only fix I have found is to wait. It will finish the lead out. On large burns, this does not occur. I bought the Pioneer DVR-A04 at http://www.essencompu.com/ for $268.00 + shipping and the external drive at http://www.meritline.com/ for $98.99 + shipping. | I have been using this drive for about a month now, and I'm completely happy with its capability. Basically I was able to pull my systems (older) CD-R/RW and DVD-ROM drives and replace them with this guy. I've burned about 6 DVD-R's using Ritek Generic (purple platter) with no coasters. Also Memorex DVD-RW (v1.1) work very well with this unit. When Burning audio or regular data CD's this drive will pretty much work with anything as far as I can tell. However due to my extremely picky DVD player (Sony!) it will only play XVCD's using CD-RW media as it will not accept any CD-R media. I have only tried the Maxell CD-RW (700MB) CD's. They are rated at 4X speed, but the Panasonic burns at 8X fine with them. Over all, I will rate this drive a 10 since I have not tried any other products, but I am completely happy with its capabilities. Comments posted by Bman from Other, November 01, 2002. | Just bought this burner for US$299.Works fine in my system.Have been able to copy DVD's on the fly straight onto a DVD-RW with no problem.Have not attempted to fit larger than 4.7GB files onto a DVD-R or RW yet but I'm sure it will work fine.Software included with burner is simple but works well for straight out copying. | I have had this drive for several months now and I can't say one bad thing about it. Works fine for Xbox, DVD movies and anything I throw at it, Recently I put on a hacked firmware that allows 2X burning on some 1X media and now I am in heaven lol I use Ritek 1X media when burning it in 2X and have never had a problem.. | I bought it 2 months ago for 300 Euro. Very good burner. Burned 50-60 DVD-R (intenso, tdk, creation, princo) and NOT ONE BAD DISC. Works great for burning dvd-r video, data etc. I'm using Nero and primo dvd. For the discs that support 2x speed it can write at 2x, for those who don't support 2x it writes in 1x, so don't get confused about the a04 speed. It's in the media, not the burner. | got this drive a few weeks ago from www.ebuyer.com £210 great drive no problems have burnt load of disks vids, data u name it i tryed it on this drive and it rocks not a single coaster yet, i havent had any probs with over heating or anything, (might have something to do with the cooling in the case but hell who cares it works). only problem i got is that no matter what media i use or software i cant get the thing to burn at 2x it refuses. it would have 10 if it would write at 2x for me! i give it a 9.5 Comments posted by Darren Higgins from Other, October 13, 2002. | I have this drive for 2 months now and paid 350€ bulk. (via Germany). Recently I went to see a computerfair (in Belgium) and I saw the same drive for 380€ bulk as well! And these people were so happy thinking that they could sell a cheap DVD-Writer! Idiots. So please stay around 300€ for sure... I read that DVD+R/+RW will dominate, so better wait if prices drop a little more. The Pioneer does not have many competition on the DVD-R/-RW site, however it is a good drive but ofcourse slow, the only question for me is if the future will still sell DVD-R's and DVD-RW's!? | I purchased my DVR-104 from Span.com and originally used Mirror DVD's @ £1.40 each, i encountered quite a few problems with these when putting video streams longer than 1 hour (The movie locked up after 1 hour, which is a shame because they work in XBox and PS2). So the i decided to try some DataSafe Classics @ £8.80 for 10 and they work absolutely great, and yes they work in Xbox and PS2. Although not the best DVD-Writer i have tested it was all i could aford at the time, and it does what i need. Both downloaded from Kazaa Burning using Nero: Data: Worked fine, no probs Video: Worked fine but can not play on some DVD players Buring using ULEAD: Data: NA Video: Soooooo easy to use. Created DVDs with chapters, menus etc Plays on all DVD players. All in all im well pleased with this little baby. | I love this burner! I have had almost no problems burning DVDs using Nero and the new firmware upgrade. I can burn 2x on generic 2x discs. | bought this on sunday and installed it on tuesday also burnt a dvd region 0 with it no problems there....only problem that i had was when i installed the dvd writer i had to format my drive as i kept gettin errors coming up....know that i have formated it works fine burnt a dvd in 1hour next step for me is to try and put a few films onto on dvd........well worth £199 Comments posted by nash from Other, October 02, 2002. | Bought this baby few days ago and it rocks, burned some dvd-r's now and no problem at all :) I use cheap bulk dvd-r's that cost $2 and it burns them dvd's like a charm.... i use Nero and Stomp Record now and i havent had a single prob yet. | Seems to work for me. Only problem is I wish there was a way to prevent dust from geting into the drive when the tray opens. Sometimes you can see the dust preventing some burning on the disk with your naked eyes and it isn't pretty. It could cause coasters:(. Other than that, it has been ok. I haven't seen the heating problems that others have mentioned. Yes, the disk is warm when you burn it-but doesn't a cdr get warm too? The Optodisk brand of dvd-rs has worked for me. | Grabbed this unit a few weeks ago and it works a peach, I am not sure what the spaz wrote about this before me but all I can say he must be smoking and drinking them red neck fixins !!!! The drive burns every time no problems at all no bad firmware or overheating ha ha !!!! Recomended by the cartload there I go with that hillybilly thanng !!
