I bought the drive for Canadian $333 (incl tax see oemexpress) which is cheaper than most of the 2X drives on the market. I had my eye on the Pioneer A05 for some time but it costs between $450 and $500 +tax here. So when I saw this price I jumped on it (got the last one too!). I've copied one dvd-5 no problem and shrank a dvd-9 no problem (slight artifacting blips on this one but only happens twice for like half a second). I've also converted a 4 part SVCD to one DVD and the quality is the same but plays smoother on dvd (guess witch movie Gollum?). Disc's work fine on my Playstation 2 and Koss KD260 (best $99 standalone on the market). Used Memorex 2.4X disc's. My only complaint would be the current price of blank disc's. Average $5 for +R's and $10 for +RW's. I was hesitant about not having -R support but from what i've read lately it looks like +R is the better choice between the two when considering future applications. All in all for the price you really can't go wrong.

I bought this DVD burner as a Memorex 4X drive. The firmware reads out as an NEC ND-1100a firmware version 1.9.

I'm disappointed with the burner because it has compatability problems with my older Toshiba DVD player. Yet I don't see this problem with my HP DVD200i burner on another computer. The DVD's do work on my newer DVD player and the 5 PC I tried with DVD drives.

I used the same software to burn the DVD on both burners. I used Nero to copy a DVD burned on each burner on the other burner. I copied a DVD originally produced with the HP burner, that works on the older DVD player, with the NEC burner. The copy wouldn't work on the older DVD player. When I went the other way. I copied a DVD produced with the NEC burner, that wouldn't work on the old DVD player, with the HP burner. The copy played on the older DVD player.

The above seems to say there is nothing wrong with the DVD data. The lead-in and lead-out seem to be controlled by the burner. There doesn't seem to be any disk access during those times. I'm wondering that is where the problem may be with the NEC burner.

Bought it bulk for $185. Backed up my first DVD to Fuji DVD+R media in 1 hour total time using Decrypter/DVD2one/Nero. Played on my Sony DAV-S300 player with no problems, so far love it.

Actually bought this one listed as a Verbatim VBTDVRX4A at Best Buy for $209. It comes in in a Verbatim box, but as soon as I got it home, pulled it out and on the label on the drive is printed NEC ND-1100A. Used a Phillips DVD+R media and DVD Decryptor. Decrypted and ripped straight to an ISO file (took about 25min.). Then used Nero to burn the ISO file. In less than 50min - 1 hour I had a complete ( menus, subtitles, languages ) copy of the movie I had rented. For the price, I've yet to see a downside of this drive. I give it a 9 instead of a 10 just because of the lack of good software with it.

Machine specs:

Dell Dimension 4450
2.53GHz P4
128MB DDR
120GB HD

Hello all,

I work at a computer shop and have seen many different dvd burners, but this one is a steal for its price!! Very reliable as well, haven't had a coaster yet from the 50 I burned. Tomorrow I'll get a 4x disc and try the 4 speed for a time. Very cheap reliable and easy to use burner, thus a 10+!

Got this writer a week ago. Burned my first home video using
Ulead VS7 and DVD MovieFactory on Mitsubishi DVD+RW and cheap
DVR+R. No problem encountered so far. Videos playable on
my Lite-On DVD rom and standalone player, LG5946PT.
Highly recommended

The BULK version of this 4X speed DVD+RW is on www.komplett.co.uk for £135. This price includes VAT. The website says that they have 1000+ in stock.

Seems like a bargain to me so I just bought one and will review the drive ASAP.

got the bulk-version. Burned DVD+R and DVD+RW withoout any problems and my Pioneer 343 plays them without any problems. great drive.

My first + writer. Cant fault it so far, both R and RW disk in good time and work on everything I have tried. Standalone DVD, PS2, PC.
Even filled with MP3s from HDD and it did a full burn no problems here.
Even using cheap DVDRW and R media gives perfect results. Used Nero DVD2one, and Instant copy so far. Along with dvdxcopy

Had a DVD-R Ao4 and this drives makes Pioneers drive look slow and complicated. All together a great retail package

Would recommend to people looking to buy their first drive.

Dell Dimension 8250, XP etc...
Problems writing SVCD CDr's, hangs during "Writing Lead-in" so badly that I have to reboot the machine to get the destroyed CDr out of the drive, which just keeps spinning to infinity.
Software: At least 3 different programs, for example a really fresh Nero Release (5.5.10.15a).

No problems writing ordinary Audio-cd's though.

Got one bulk ND1100A and did not have any problem.
Used only with +RW blanks until now.
System is Celeron 1GHz, cheap VIA all-in-one MB, Windows XP.

A update about my NEC. In the recommendations is a link (http://delltalk.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=dim_cdrom&message.id=55295) I was suprised that I was not the only one with the "DVD+RW" problem. I have phoned Dell and they recognize the problem and they are busy with a patch/fix. They ensured me that it was a DVD+RW problem anddoes not occur with a DVD+R. I tried it and it worked!

I have bought a Dell with the NEC writer and I must say until now I am not satisfied. I have problems with writing DVD's I have used the programs delivered with the PC like Easy CD Creator, Movie VideoWave and Sonic DVDit. I have also tried Ulead DVD workshop and Pinnacle stdio 8.
All programs author the movie well (some more satisfying than others) but when it comes to burning it goes wrong during the closing.
Also I encountered that I can re-write DVD+RW only 6 or 8 times, then I cannot erase it anymore.
I can write and re-write CD's very well

I bought a Dell Desktop with the NEC ND-1100 DVD+RW unit installed in December 2002. Have had no problems with the burner. I have had problems with Direct CD interferring with Sonic MYDVD and DVDit software. The drive works fine. no problem with it reading or burning on various media. So far, burned over 100 disks and no coasters yet.

I bought a NEC DVD burner (ND1100) in order to burn DVD+. Burned several DVD+R disc and DVD+RW disc. All worked without any problem in my 2 DVD players ( Pioneer 343 + Philips 711).

The DVDs were burned with Nero 5.5 (DVD copy) and DVD Moviefactory 1.0 (recored the movie with Hauppage WIN-TV PVR PCI from TV).

I tried the following DVD manufactures (DVD+R: Intenso, MMore, Sony, TDK / DVD+RW: Fuji, RICOH). All worked fine for recording and in the DVD players. Even not always mentioned, I could burn all DVDs at 2.4s speed. As Intenso is one of the cheapest in Germany, I just bought a pack with 25 DVD+Rs.

When recording from TV I decided to use 4 Mbit/s, because the quality is excellent. 2 Mbit/s is okay, but as better quality is available and everything fits now on 1 DVD, I prefer the 4 Mbit/s.

Conclusion: The DVD-burner is fantastic and I’m more than happy. Especially my Pioneer DVD player support DVD+R/+RW without any problem.

I received two Dell Optiplex GX 260 systems with these burners installed and preconfigured with these NEC ND-1100A drives. I haven't burned a DVD yet, but I have noted that the units cannot read black Memorex CD-R's--already recorded or blank. They just do not read the disks. Dell has already sent a replacement drive for one, but I suspect it will also not read the discs. The drive also seems to have sporadic difficulty reading other CD-R's, claiming file corruption. I agree that Dell's technical support and knowledge of this drive is mediocre at best--even at the premium support level.

Someone has deletet my entry. Perhaps because it was a question.

The Dell version and +RW disks is not at good combiantion, see http://delltalk.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=dim_cdrom&message.id=55295 , the link Pete has postede.

Did´nt give my voting last, but her it is.....

The Dell version more than sucks!

Got this drive in a new Dell machine and had a similar problem as the person above posted where CD+RW's would not erase once written too. However I switched from Easy CD Creator to Copy2DVD and I have no problems rewriting DVD's anymore.

Installed it last night and I LIKE IT! I gave it a 9, but will change that to 10 when it writes CD-R a bit faster (*24 would do for me).

Media used so far:
Smartbuy DVD+RW (*2.4)

Tools used so far:
RecordNow MAX 4.5 - OK!
DVD X Copy 1.4.1 - OK! (Has to be the latest version to use ND-1100)

My comment to Dell users: It seems only Dell systems have problems. I have quick erased and burned again with no problem.

System: MSI K3 Ultra, 1800+ XP, 512 MB PC2700, Pioneer DVD-106S (as master IDE 1, NEC ND-1100 as slave on same channel.), MS XP Pro.
DVD player: Pioneer DV-525 (It plays what ever I put in it!)

The cheapest 4x DVD writer here at the moment. I've tried 4x and 2.4x Verbatim DVD+R media as well as various DVD+R/RW media made by Ricoh with no problems. A full 4.37 GB 4x DVD+R was burned in 14:18.

+Fast DVD writing, good seek times, good reading speeds of CD's, reads Key2Audio and CDS200 protected audio CDs, quiet operation and is cheap

-A bit slow with identifying inserted media and in reading burned DVD's and DVD-video compared with the fastest DVD-ROM drives (avg. speed is around 3.8x)

Recieved my new NEC ND-1100A Monday 17 February 2003. Installed drive with no problems, would not let me set DVD region until I had re-booted my PC three times. After this the drive has worked fine, seems to be compatible with Verbatim & Infiniti meadia. Have written six times to DVD+RW and three DVD+R using the latest Ahead Nero download all with very good results. I am not sure how compatible the + disc's are with current players but my Pioneer DVD player DV-444 plays them with no trouble.

Keep my fingers crossed that this drive continues to prodvide the excellent results I have produced to-date.

My set up is:-
Abit AT7-MAX2 mainboard
AMD 2.2 GHZ Processor
DDRAM 512 @ 400 MHZ Memory

The NEC ND-1100A is the master with a Plextors 48/24/48 as slave both on IDE 2

I got this drive from Komplett

Good Price?
