I got my drive with my new dell, i burnt a dvd+r no problem with dvd encryptor, i cant get nero, fireburner, or ez cd creator to read the drive. I updated my aspi drivers and also flashed the drive with the latest firmware. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Got mine for 169 euro. For it's price a great machine. But: I could not write any firmware, not the nec one, not the rpc-1 (which would be nice). It does not work well with Nashua DVD+R (avoid like the plague), the nashua's could be read on my saba dvd player, and the toshiba of my dell laptop, but not in a hitachi dvd rom or a philips combo of my mac. I tried Maxell and Philips DVD+R which worked without problems. For the money great value, just need to fix the firmware thing. And avoid nashua.

Reinhart I had the same problem with rewriting to dvd+rw's as well, so I went out and bought a new dvd player which was +rw compatible. Most older dvd players will have a problem with +rw's because of the bitsetting of +rw's. +r's don't have this problem because they match the dvd-rom bitsetting whereas +rw's don't. Other drives can use a patching program to fix this but unfortunetly the current firmware of the 1100A doesn't support changing the bitsetting. I never did try the image trick though. Oh well, another new dvd player. My girlfriend understands, NOT!

This is working great for me. Burnt some DVDs with Nero - no problem. I burned directly from DVD drive as well as from an image. I am using Verbatim 4X +R media.
The DVDs play in my settop toshiba SD-3109.
I had a problem with my Epox motherboard's VIA ide driver. This driver was causing hangups. Once I removed it, Windows XP directly supported it, it worked flawlessly.
Great drive at a great price. I bought it as Cendyne 225.

This drive is great - mine is the NEC-branded one, not the Dell OEM and everything works as it should. I can create DVD+R video from Nero or direct from Ulead DVD Workshop and they all play fine on set-top players (Toshiba SD-2109 and SD-100). No joy with +RW discs as neither player likes them, but I use the +RW for testing final DVD's before committing to +R and also I use a couple for backup of video work in progress and general day-to-day data (digital photos, downloaded software that I bought etc.).
At the moment, I'm sticking with Verbatim 4x +R discs as they have worked well and I get them for a reasonable price.

I'm back!
Just tried the trick. Burn to image with nero and after that: burn that image to de DVD recorder! Very weird, but I get working DVD's this way. Any clue anyone?????

I bought the nec 1100a this morning for € 192,- (retail)
Problems with DVD+RW. A new +RW written to for the first time: no problem on my philips home cinema system. Formatted and written to again: NO GO ! On the PC the disk seems to work fine...
DVD+R no problems. Firmware 1.A0.

I'm trying the 'image-trick' no. I'll keep you posted.
If the problem isn't fixed in firmware, I will return it for another brand. (philips? Aopen?)

I've only had this drive for about a week. After rebate, I paid $130 (US) at Staples. So far, I'm happy. But, I'll start w/ the bad.

Burns with both Nero (current version, just downloaded) and Pinnacle Studio 8 (current version) fail to burn to this disk properly, UNLESS SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS ARE TAKEN. Both write to the disk, but create disks (dvd+r and dvd+rw) that cannot be read, even by the 1100A drive, even using just Window Explorer.

Now, for the excellent news - the problem is easy to overcome. Using Studio 8 for authoring (because of its editing capability), I created video content, but did not burn. Then, I opened nero and selected to make a new DVD-Video disk. I moved the content that I created in Studio 8 into the Video_TS in the Nero windows. I then had nero create a disk image only, i.e., without burning to the disk. After that, I used nero to burn a DVD+R (or DVD+RW) from the image. Worked perfectly, my ancient pioneer 414 DVD standalone player reads the resulting disks like a champ, and the workaround takes only a little time (particularly compared to the many hours it takes to rendered capture VHS video into DVD-format).

Since the NEC 1100A can certainly do a fine job of writing DVD's, I give good marks to the drive. I wish that the authors of DVD authoring applications would do a better job of providing full compatibility with this drive however. From what little I've read so far, it seems like other drives can have similar problems with some software.

Dell is replacing mine under warranty! It would burn DVD+R's but not DVD+RW's. I am getting perfect burns with Ritek+2.4's($1.75) and CopyTo DVD($30.00). I tried the firmware upgrade but no luck. I will keep you posted on the new drive. Dell tech support is GREAT!

After using the Pioneer 103 I jumped at this when the price got to an acceptable level. Also with -r prices on the rise this was a no brainer.
The burner has worked perfectly and is so much faster then the 103. Throw away the included software and go to town with the one clicks or CCE.

After being used to the highly praised Pioneer A05, i was a little skeptical about getting the NEC +RW burner..I was woried it wouldn't burn as well and just would be top quality like the Pioneer...i was gladly wrong.

I've backed up many dvds on cheap Optimum brand dvd+r with no problems what so ever. Works perfectly fine with my dvd burning suite...dvd decrypter, dvd2one and record now max.

I'm very happy with this burner but I bought it at Staples for 179.99 after rebate under the Cednyne badge but I will be retuning and buying from avlogic.com for 147.00 plus shipping.

For those having trouble with the NEC ND-1100A, here's my two cents. I got the burner for $80 with a new Dell dimension. I upgraded the firmware to the latest. Like others have mentioned I've had a hard time burning working dvds with 3rd party software like Nero--particularly if I want the disc to play on a home dvd player. So far the ONLY software that burns dependably with this drive is Sonic Solutions DVDit! PE. I've tried Nero with all the different UDF settings. I've tried Roxio 6, Sonic DVD architect, Stomp, and at least 3 others I can't remember. None made discs that played on home units and many didn't play on the same drive that burned them. Even "MyDVD" that shipped with the burner had problems. So if you're going through similar problems save yourself the week of agony I went through before I found something that worked (thank god for file sharing). Adobe is coming out with burning software in the summer--hopefully a real software company will get it right.

I bought this burner recently for $160 for AVLogic.com. I have burnt 4 DVD+Rs and 6 DVD+RWs with NO PROBLEMS. Well, the only problem that I had (which I knew before I bought the burner) was that my old stand alone player (Apex 600-AD) does not play +R.

I have only burnt DVDs using Pinnacle's Instant Copy and the current version of Nero.

I have used K-Hypermedia Optimum and Fuji DVD media.

It may not support both formats, but for the money you can't loose!!!

Dell HAS a Flash fix for this DVD burner/R59801!!. Works great. Loves Ritek 2.4 purple/ R or RW. 30 DVD's burnt without a coaster. I have found no disadvantages. DvdXcopy, DVD2one Great burns with CopytoDVD/ worth the $30.00 & very easy to use. Easy CD is a waste. Best of luck.
The DVD's play well on the Philips 724AT. Process and burn in 45 minutes.

Great writer and cheap (€185 including nero). All burned +r/rw are read flawlessly by my pioneer444.

This writer is the dogs danglies.... it only gets 9 because of relatively low CDR/RW speed (and of course the lack of DVD- support)

;o)

Hello,

I am using the NEC drive for a couple of weeks now and it works great ! I use the cinecraft encoder or LSX encoder for encoding my DV files, and than the authoring software of DVD architect (Sonic) wich allows importing already encoded MPEG files.

The burning speed is 2.3 for DVD+RW discs, I don't use DVD+R discs at the moment because I am still experimenting and the discs are a bit to expensive for that purpose. The discs prices are € 3.89 for DVD+RW and € 2.89 for DVD+R discs. You can't get 4-speed discs yet, so I didn't test them also.

De writing speed of CD-RW disc is a bit slow (4-speed only), purhaps my discs are not suitable for 10-speed, the CD-R are at 16-speed ok. It takes only 4 to 6 minutes to burn a complete CD.

Does anyone now if there are firmware updates available, I even heard rumours about the an update for burning DVD-R and DVD-RW ?? Maybe somebody knows ? Please contact us.

Regards,

Jack Visser

Bought it (ND-1100A) 3 days (30 Apr) ago. Firmware is 1.90, price was US$158 at Hong Kong. So far so good. Had burnt a few DVD+R discs with original DV contents transcoded to MPEG2. Had also burnt some DVD+RW (repeatedly on 1 disc) for testing purpose. Burn a 4.7GB disc takes 22 minutes on 2.4x medium.

My set top DVD player (which is a Skyworth 1050D) is able to read the DVD+R and DVD+RW discs written by the ND-1100A. But I found a 2 years' old Sony set top DVD player which doesn't like DVD+R nor DVD+RW!

Also tried to rip an original region 1 pressed DVD (Air Force One) using DVDDecrypter. Surprised me is that the DVD is a DVD-10 disc (double side and each side with one layer) but not a DVD-18. I ripped one side (the widescreen side) and burnt the ISO image to a DVD+RW, and just enjoying perhaps the 10 times I watched the movie at home! The first scene (to capture General Radek) is my favorite test on DVD players (for MPEG decode, deinterlace and video performance) and TVs!

On the down side, there is NO rpc-1 firmware yet! So, has to keep another DVD-ROM drive on my PC to read disc.

I really look forward if the ND-1100A can be updated to write DVD-R and DVD-RW. If I had that US$100 extra in my pocket, I will buy the Pioneer A05! My personal experience is that DVD-R is still the most compatible media on set top boxes. But the ND-1100A is just so cheap!

Branded media is around US$2 per DVD+R (TDK/Verbatim 2.4X) and US$3 per DVD+RW (TDK/Verbatim 2.4X) here in Hong Kong. They made me remember the time when I bought a piece of Kodak CDR at US$7 around 7 years ago, and the legacy 2X Yamaha/Plextor CDR drive!

Anyway, the quality of the ND-1100A is within my expectation.

My 2 cents.

Stephen Wong at Hong Kong.

Great Burner !
I use it since three weeks and I'm very happy with it.
Burned a lot of DVDs (data and movies) from different manufacturers such as
- Intenso +RW
- verbatim +R / +RW
- philips +R
They all work fine in my computer and different desktops.

I guess it's important to burn with the last version of NERO if you use it. I choose ISO/UDF and strict Iso Level 1 / UDF 1.02 and that's it.

I'm now a little bit worried about the posting of grey imports (I bought it online and I will check my serial-no.) allthough I think that NEC can't refuse support and I can't read in NEC's press statement something about that you can't run firmware updates on it.

I don't miss the -R burning capability and I'm happy that I've saved the +100 Euro which I would have to spend for it. Life cyles are very short and I'll better buy a 8x burner next year ;-)

Update to my earlier post...

Bought the drive from www.komplett.co.uk for £135

I bought the bare drive so it came with no software.
I have backed-up one DVD so far. I used DVDdecrypter, DVD2one and then burnt with Nero (latest version to recognise the NEC drive)

I have also burnt my own DV video (edited in premiere, frameserved out to Tmpgenc for mpeg2 encoding. DVD authored using spruceup and burnt using nero again)

Both were burnt to sony DVD+RW media which work on my sony dvd player

Also burnt some CD(roms)

So far no DVD or or CD coasters

I did experience some problems reading a DVD (gladiator) when I first installed the drive but nothing since.

I am so far happy with my drive.

I have seen a few forums where people have been discussing flashing the drive for -R(W) compatability. I guess it may be possible but as of yesterday I couldn't find any firmware. Also seems NEC used to call the 1300 the 1100 in japan (+ hongkong and others) and this is causing confusion. Don't buy the drive assuming you will be able to flash to -R(w) but it may well happen

The writer is currently on sale in Germany for approx. 180 EUR by many online retailers.
But if you decide to buy, you should be aware of this press release by NEC: http://www.necd.de/press.php?id=223
It's in german, so I try to summarize it's content:
NEC warns about import drives with a non-upgradable firmware, which is not supported by NEC on the european market.
Supported drives can be recognized by the letters "GNX" or "VOB" on the drive printed next to the serial number.
Non-supported Imports have a "GEF" next to the serial.
NEC advises to return the drives with the "GEF"-Lebel to the retailer to have them exchanged with a "VOB" or "GNX" drive.

I would like to communicate with DJ Petro who left a comment just today (April 24, 2003) and has had such good results from the burner.
I have tried using several different applications to burn, and out of 15 tries have only come out with 3 DVD's that will work properly. Currently am using the Movies to CD/DVD by Magix - previously used AverDVD by Mediostream - tried MyDVD by Sonic - and was told by Dell tech support to use the Easy CD Creator. All of which are giving me problems. I would really like to figure this out if someone would be so kind as to assist me.

This drive is a champ. I have had absolutely no problems with this drive what so ever. It came with my Dell Desktop. I have made many burns with no coasters. Had to ditch Easy CD Creator because it blows. I have always had problems with it. Using RecordNow Max which is a sweet software and still burning with no problems.

DVD Media...
Imation
Verbatim
Memorex
all good burns

Only thing I wish it supported was -r/rw media.

Great Drive.
