| Great drive, came in my new Dell I got for video processing. Not had a problem yet (20+ DVD burns). Wish there was DVD-R support, however I dont see this feature being provided in a hardware update anytime soon, since Dell is a member of the DVD+RW Alliance. Wouldnt be good to support the competing format when you helped invent another. We can wish though. Would have rated 10 if it had -R -RW support. | I have got this drive in Japan and it is not expensive in Japan. It works with +R and +RW disc. Basically, it is a good drive, even I drive it with IEEE1394 or directly connect with IDE. However, you should connect this drive with fast HD or no addition drive when using it under IDE port. Otherwise, it could not be functioned. I have already made 2 DVD+RW and 2 DVD+R. Every disc is ok and could be played in my Sony Playstation 2 (Hong Kong Version). However, none of them can be played in my Toshiba 350K DVD player. I wonder if my Toshiba can't read any RW disc. (Even can't use CDRW) The overall performance is good for this drive. However, it seems that there is no 4X DVD+R disc in Hong Kong. So, 4X speed was not tested. | Apparently the OEM version included with Dell machines do not support DVD-R or DVD-RW. The retail version is supposed support both DVD+R/RW and DVD-R/RW. My guess is that NEC did't have time to finish the DVD-R/RW support in time for Dell. Hopefully a firmware update adds DVD-R/RW support for the OEM version. | I got the NEC ND-1100a as part of my Dell desktop (running XP) in late Nov 2002 (not bought separately and not available for sale separately at the time Dell shipped my desktop). Dell only advertised it as 4xDVD+R, 2.4xDVD+RW (not a dual plus/minus as discussed on various news sites). The DVD writer only works for the plus media. I tried a good Maxell DVD-R and Nero said it couldn't burn to it. The 4x DVD+R media is not out yet (due sometime in December), so I have been burning 2.4xDVD+R and 2.4xDVD+RW media (my DVD+R media has been Verbatim with one Imitation, my DVD+RW media has been HP). Movie burns: I have burned at least 6 movies (10-70 minutes) to DVD+R and DVD+RW using ULead DVD Workshop. All have worked well. Data burns: I have burned almost 10 data DVD discs (mostly to DVD+R, 1 to DVD+RW) using the latest Nero (5.5.x.19?) . Until last night, I had no problems. Last night, I accidentially created a multi-session DVD+R (one file appeared in two sessions). When I put the resulting DVD in my Win2000 machine and copied it to its hard drive, it copied all the files with no errors. However, when I tried to open the files, all the files had problems. I'm no expert with multi-session, so I don't know if this is the burner, Nero or just me (and my poor understanding). Overall, I'm happy with the drive. Movies: no problem. Data DVDs: no problems when I chose "no multi-session" in Nero. Compatibility with 4x DVD+R awaits media availability. I'm disappointed at the lack of DVD-R support but Dell didn't advertise it (it was just the general buzz on the web that it would be a dual plus/minus drive).
