How to add permanent and letterboxed subtitles to a video

What I would like to show you in this guide is how to add permanent/burned in AND letterboxed subtitles (meaning in the black part and not IN the picture itsell) to a video using 'Virtualdub' (so NOT 'VirtualdubMOD'), 'SRT to SSA Converter' and Avery Lee's own subtitle filter.
