just bought some Ritek G04 media but having trouble burning at 4x. when i burn at 4x, the data on the outer edges of the media gets messed up. however i can burn at 2x with no problems. i was able to burn TDK (RICOH media) DVD+R fine at 4x. i have the dd0201 with the 2.23 f/w. i had also tried to burn the riteks with the 2.17 f/w as well. anyone else having the problem of burning 4x -R media? Got DD0201 months ago, immediate up date f/w to 2.17. copy great with memorex-r, compusa-r, fuji+r +rw, opptodisk-r. but the all -r disk won't play on my cyberhome ch-dvd-402 player and liteon ltd 163 dvd rom. Just update to f/w 2.23 and that fix it. liteon ltd163 and cyberhome ch-dvd-402 recognize my newly copy dvd-r right away. Great. So, f/w 2.17 does have problem w/ copy dvd-r. Last week when I tried to flash the drive to 1.16 on XP Pro, the computer hang after the flash is done and program said it was not successful. Although the drive seems OK after force rebooting and I successfully burned some DVD-R and CD-RWs, I was having trouble with CD-RWs after a while, and have a lot of errors. Tried to flash to the latest firmware 2.23, saw the same message, although the correct version was seen after rebooting. Then I connected the drive to a 2000 machine (I have the drive on a firewire/USB2 case), the flashing went very smoothly, and now the drive works great, even with the problematic CD-RWs. As for HD burn, I tried TDK, ATT and immation, all of them failed. However, Maxell worked really well, although I should have bought the BestBuy Fuji CD-R as suggested earlier by others. IF you are having problems with the drive, try to flash it on 2000! Comments posted by YL from Other, November 15, 2003. Rated this writer No rating. |

Just updated the DD0203 with firmware 2.23 and noticed better playback compatibity with all of my older PC/home DVD players which some refused to recognize/play the burned DVD disc using old firmware 2.16. It let me burn 2X using cheap CompUSA brand 1X DVD-R (Princo OEM). Firmware 2.23 is IT!!!! Great burner!!! Comments posted by JohnL from Other, November 15, 2003. Rated this writer 9 of 10. |

Flashed it and lost everything. Wasn't even able to recognize the liteon I had in the system. I removed the drive, and got my liteon back. I emailed tech support, waiting for answer. Comments posted by EMTJeepers from Other, November 14, 2003. Rated this writer No rating. |

OK i just bought a DD0201 and am having a LOT of troubles with it =( i updated the firmware to 2.23 http://www.optorite.com/support.htm now.... i have tried multiple types of media.. 1/5(messed up) TDK-R 0/1 Verbatim+R 0/1 Hypermedia-R 1/3 Fujifilm+R 1/1 That's+R (came with it) 2/3 HDBURN with memorex music cd-r's so all in all... thats 3/11 burn attemps were successful, and wow is that a waste of $$ for media, I was not running anything in the background (i would like to be running things in the background =\ but since i was messed up my first 2 attemps i stopped) i would burn with Nero6 ultra and Record Now, when the burn failed i would get NO ERROR my computer would just freeze totally and i would have to reboot (im running amd barton 2500 with 512mb ram and 200gb hd) I have been successfull.. but not very often(also im running it as a SLAVE using udma33. So far so bad, i got it from newegg.com for $112 shipped to my door and for that price i probably wont return it.. even though im hardly getting anything out of it. I forgot to mention that I put the drive into an external USB 2.0 enclosure and it works great. The total price for the drive ($108.50 from accupc.com) and the enclosure ($31.00 from htcnetstore.com) was $149.50. It is a great deal. Comments posted by Jason158705 from Other, November 13, 2003. I bought this drive about a week ago and have been using it for two or three days. I bought it through Pricewatch from AccuPC for $108.50. I decided to not upgrade the firmware until I had a problem with it. So far there have been no problems. The eject button seems to work fine if you press it hard enough. No coasters have been made so far. The only problems I've encountered are with the time the drive takes to recognize the blank discs. Especially the Memorex DVD+RW discs. When I first wrote to the Memorex DVD+RW discs it worked fine. But, when I went to format it and rewrite on it the process fails. I would not recommend using the Memorex DVD+RW discs. However the Memorex DVD+R and the DVD-R discs have worked flawlessly and played on all my stand-alone players. And the That's DVD+R that came with it also worked. I found that for best performance with HD burn, use Fuji cd's. Usually on sale at Bestbuy 100 for 9.99 after rebates. Having hardware write errors all of a sudden. Using Compusa +R media, burned the first 10 with no problems, now I have 6 coasters. Will add the 11/11 patch tonight and try again. Comments posted by EMTJeepers from Other, November 12, 2003. I have ordered this dvd-+rw after consulting with the Forum & reading other people opinon here. I have to say I have it for 5 days now , It's working ok, it burned dvd-r blanks at 2x after I flashed it. It's ok because I I do not know if these blanks can do any better. It burnt a low quality cdr in full speed , My previous CDRW could do only at x8. I have a problem with HDburn with those CDRs I hope it's because of there low quality. any way it's the cheepest in the dual dvd burners section & has 8 meg of cache (even though I do not think it adds any thing). any way for 106$ at AccuPC + 5$ delivery It's a GOOD DEAL. Oh, no coster yet. enjoy. Comments posted by Noam from Other, November 12, 2003. Rated this writer 8 of 10. |

I can burn dvd-r 4x, +r 4x, n rw+, n - 4x's. I can play in my apex dvd tv player, and my emerson dvd player. the rw n -r 4x's will play in my computer, but the +r will not. I love the drive. Very fast CD burning for a DVD burner (24x). Enough that I can dump my Lite-on CD burner. However, it doesn't support a number of blanks from various manufacturers. I upgraded from a Pioneer A04 and I still have over 100 Maxell 2x DVD-R blanks. They don't work with the Optorite. Rather than trying to dump the blanks and get ones that ARE compatible, I'm dumping the drive. Had the drive supported my blanks, I definitely would have kept it. There is a problem with the windows flash utility provided by Optorite. It appears to fail and hang when you flash the firmware. However, from my own experience and what I've seen on other forums, it successfully flashes the drive anyway. I notice today that the new firmware v2.23 for the DD0201 is up on Optorite's website. Let's hope the update of DD0203 firmware will follow soon and address the DVD-R compatibility issues. Comments posted by jacksona from Other, November 05, 2003. Rated this writer 5 of 10. |

Got this drive today from accupc for $108.5 (free shipping), put it in a coolmax usb2/firewire enclosure (CD-520 combo) from dealsonic ($56+4.95). I was really surprised that the computer (XP) and nero 6 recognized it and it can burn instantly. Flashed the firmware to the latest, that when I got the scare of the evening. At the end of the flash, it said flashing failed, the drive became a generic CD-ROM! and had to force quit the flashing program, and it would not reflash and the computer froze. Feeling really bad at this point and regretted doing it, I restarted the computer and the drive. To my pleasant surprise, everything works. I hope I did not screw anything else. The flash program says the drive has the latest firmware 2.16. The lesson-don't fool around with the firmware if you don't have a problem. The enclosure is quite stylish but it is kind of noisy, I may have to replace the fan in a later date. Overall, with a little work, an external drive with both fireware and USB2 is assembled for about $170. I prefer it this way because I have a couple of other computers at home, it is now much easier to back up files. Comments posted by yl from Other, November 03, 2003. Rated this writer No rating. |

Got this drive about a month ago, and it has produced ZERO coasters from various brands of DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+RW, and DVD-RW I've thrown at it. (I tried out as many different types as possible by trading with friends, etc.) Not only that, but the disks have played on EVERY standalone player they have been tried on that normally accepts that type of disk. I've found the reports that this drive is picky with media absoluetly rediculous. I bought SKY brand disks for $0.67 a piece (reported to be the cheapest and poorest quality disks out there) and they work great. Bought a black DD0203 from Newegg.com. It burns at 4X perfectly every time with Ritek G4 4X DVD-R and TDK (Ricoh OEM) 4X DVD+R discs. It also burns at 2.4X sucessfully with Memorex(Ricoh OEM) 4X DVD+RW discs but it had problem reading/playing back the same DVD+RW discs, other home/pc DVD players also have the same problem. So I guess either this drive is picky about +RW media or the Memorex +RW media is not that good. I tried to write at 1X speed to the +RW media, but the burning software (DVDDecrypt) still insisted to write at 2.4X. One interesting note is that my older Panasonic A110 home DVD player will recognize and play DVD+/-R discs recorded at 2X and not 4X. So I guess, lowering the recording speed also improve compatibility with older players. It rips DVD-ROM movies at about 8-9X, but will only rip DVD+/-R discs at 4X. Over all, the drive is very quiet, the eject button is hard to push (minor nuissance), burns at 4X perfectly with 4X DVD-R/+R discs. This drive is a keeper!!! Hi, My MSI DRA4 is the same as the Optowrite DD0203. In fact both drives are re-badged Sanyo drives. www.rpc1.org will tell you. This MSI came with the 2.17 firmware and its ok so far. Whats all this talk about this drive not producing DVD-R's that cant be read on computers? Thats ridiculous. For me, discs that are problematic are Mirror Paltinum and AladdinMedia. Good ones are Imation 4x and eProformance. Thanks. (keep posting people) Comments posted by Bright1 from Other, October 22, 2003. Rated this writer No rating. |

So far I have been very happy with this burner. I flashed to the 2.16 firmware without difficulty. I purchased it for $119 from newegg about a week ago and have been able to burn DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW, and HD Burned a Fuji 48x CDR. The only trouble I have had has been with Memorex 4x DVD+RW disks. I purchased a 5-pack on sale at CompUSA for $11.00 and not a one of them worked in the drive (I returned them all)? In fact, they caused my whole Win2K OS to freeze requiring a power cycle. So far, FujiFilm DVD+R (2.4x, pn: 74101 75218), TDK DVD+RW (2.4x, pn: 20356 48118), and Sony DVD-RW (1x, pn: 27242 59550) disks have worked without a problem. I made the right decision to purchase this one. Everything I tried is successful so far. Works the +RW (Imation 2.4x)/+R (TDK 4x)/-R (Optimum 2x). Have not tried -RW. No coasters. +R/-R burnt works with all 3 of my DVD players. +RW works with two of them. The third one is old and I didn't really expect it to work with +RW. HD-burn with Fuji CD-R (TY) works like a charm. Comments posted by dvdp480 from Other, October 20, 2003. Rated this writer 10 of 10. |

Initially was very pleased with this drive after flashing to 2.16 firmware (it shipped with 2.09). I even commented here to that effect. However, I now finding out that DVD-R's burnt with this drive will not play in most PC DVD ROMs. Optorite say it's down to "older" DVD ROM's not being compatible. They certainly won't play in my LG GDR8161b, which is only 4 months old. Apparently DVD+R are perfectly OK. I just happen to own a standalone player that won't accept +R. So that's nice isn't it ! I've had this writer for about a month now and consider it a very good purchase. $130 retail package from newegg.com. I use it in a USB2.0 enclosure. If your proper USB2 drivers are installed a 4 gig rip will come off in about 8 minutes. Under IDE the WinXP drivers slow this to about 30 min !! Be sure you have your mainboard IDE drivers installed and NOT the microsoft versions. media tried and speeds: memorex +R 4x get 4x plus TDk 4x +r get 4x plus compusa 1x -R get 2x !! memorex -RW get 2x A fairly full dvd of 4.5 gig or so burns on the 4x media in 15 minutes including lead out. I've only tried the HD burn on Imation 48x CD-R and it didnt take but that wasnt the reason I bought it anyway. 8 meg !! harware buffer so I never even stop surfing or computing when I burn and no problems at all. Obviously I dont try to max the HD out during the burn but you get the idea. I have since recommended the drive to a friend and she is having the same good results. I'll give it an 8+ for the HD burn not working and it not being tested on very many media brands. The supplied burning software is very capable but I use Nero 6.
