Those who criticize this drive have not tried firmware v2.30. I am convinced that this is the root cause of many problems, if not the source media itself or the players they are using to play the media. I have had no problems whatsoever with this drive, it has an 8MB buffer and also can perform HD Burn without a hitch. For the price that it is offered at, I consider it a bargain and would buy it again in a second. Give this one a try if you are interested in the extra features at a low price as well as the inherently good basic function of the drive. Comments posted by bobster from Other, December 29, 2003. Had numerous problems with writing and reading. Upgraded to 2.30 firmware from Optorite site and now works like a dream. Optorite seems to have overcome compatibility problems with this drive. Have burnt using Bulkpaq + Choice + Ritek with no problem using DVD Shrink and Clone DVD. Reads from both Pacific and Xgeunius players O.K. Comments posted by Oggyman from Other, December 29, 2003. Updated to v2.30 firmware using WinFlash (USB external case). Have had absolutely NO problems. For $155 total price including the enclosure was a good deal. Using cheap Matrix 4X (Longten) media from shop4tech ($0.73) and after 30 DVD's have yet to burn a coaster. Full DVD takes just over 15 minutes. Have not and will not try HD burn. Understand it is only compatible when media is played in Optorite drive, totally impractical. Had hoped to burn long (i.e. high quality) VCD's on the cheap CD media, oh well. For now will stick to burning DVD's which it does EXCELLENTLY. Yet to try Ritek's. Maybe would have bought a different burner given a second chance (there are better rated burners on this site), but can seriously not complain. I have spent a long time trying to work with my Hi-Val DD0203, which is a rebatched Optorite manufactured by Sanyo. The drive came with firmware release 2.23 and initially it couldn't do anything other than reading DVD-ROMs. It couldn't even read the CD software that came with the drive. Since then I found out a few things about the drive. 1) If you run into problems, flash the drive. Sometimes flashing it just once won't do anything. The first time I tried flashing it with 2.30 and that didn't do a single thing. Flash it until it works! 2) It has to work in a cool environment. It was giving me problems when I had it stacked up between other 5.25" drives. As soon I placed it at the top of the stack, it started burning like a champ. So make sure you have good circulation in your PC case. 3) My computer froze in the middle of the flash procedure and I was forced to reset it. This messed up the flash image in the burner and I could not see the drive again either at bootup (BIOS) or in Windows. I thought the drive was dead. Then I fiddled with the jumpers in the back of the drive and I put the jumper to the second position from the right. It worked again! So once Windows booted up I flashed the drive again with 2.30 and moved the jumper back to the original position (far right) and the PC had no problem seeing the drive. I think this is not a simple drive to work with initially. But once you learned all the tricks about the drive you will have no problem burning anything you want. Now I am a happy camper! FIX FOR v2.30 ROM FLASH PROGRAM FREEZE Brian and others, While I was upgrading to v2.30, I had the "rom upgrade flash program freeze" also. After a couple of tries, I pushed the Eject button when the freeze occured. This fixed the problem, and the flash program completed normally. FYI. I love this thing. I haven't had a single problem yet, and have burned NUMEROUS DVDs. I havent had a chance to use the HD-BURN feature yet, but I can't wait till I do. I definately recommend. And for $107, this burner is a steal. Comments posted by rodeo from Other, December 19, 2003. Rated this writer 10 of 10. |

Just upgraded to FW230 tonight and have not tried it yet, but others claim it is the best. I've only used TDK-R 2X and Memorex -R 4X and have had great luck with the TDK-R, but my standalone panasonic will not play the Memorex -R 4X but they play just fine in my computer. My panansonic is an older one, so that may be the problem. Have not tried HD-burn yet. Comments posted by dap from Other, December 18, 2003. Rated this writer 9 of 10. |

Sorry ! My mistake. The v2.30 firmware for DD0201 and DD0203 drives disappeared from Optorite's and Accesstek's websites for a short while yesterday. It has now been reinstated. Comments posted by jacksona from Other, December 16, 2003. Rated this writer No rating. |

Contrary to the last post, the drive is still supported, and the firmware does still show up on the optorite web page under the "Windows" section. There's a lot of weird rumors going around about this drive, but it is a great drive that will record on any media I throw at it, the cheaper the better. Doesn't look like Optorite are supporting these two drives with any more firmware updates. They have disappeared off their website. If you haven't got v2.30 (which appears to solve most of the problems) then you are very unlucky indeed ! If you see one cheap, check the firmware version. No coasters burning DVD. Can not get it to burn ANY cds (writeable or read/write). Burning CDs with Nero just freezes entire system (W2K). Tried Firmware, different media--no luck. Works fine with all DVD media so far, but the CD burning is a hassle since now I have to install yet another device to burn CDs. Comments posted by KRayman from Other, December 08, 2003. I am trying to flash from 17 to 23/30, but when I click ok, the flash program just freezes. I have tried following these directions posted earlier 1. Disable DMA mode on your Optorite first. 2. Terminate all applications. 3. Flash the upgrade. 4. Reboot and normal up DMA and applications. and still no success. Anyone know what the problem could be? How should I be disabling DMA? I have been going through device manager, IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. Comments posted by Brian from Other, December 07, 2003. Rated this writer No rating. |

Hi from Italy I've bought Optorite in USA with internet because i haven't found it in Italy. Firmware was updated at 2.30 version. I use Princo DVD-r 4x (white) and Magnex DVD-R 2x. I've following problems: . I've decrypt (using dvd decrypter) the 2 dvd of "The two towers", i've used dvd shrink to compress and i've use Nero 6.2 to master; the media support are the same. But, 1 dvd was regularly read on my dvd player (matshita, in portable PC ACER), the other not. . essentially, on the same DVD-ROM drives or DVD players some dvd are regularly read someone else not. I don't understand why. The TECH support, rapid and courteous, don't give me real solution. Something to suggest to me? thanks giangi1963@tin.it Comments posted by Guido from Other, December 04, 2003. Rated this writer No rating. |

I am very upset with this drive. It is soooo picky with the type of media you use. I have yet to find a dvd-r media that will work with this drive. It burned dvd+r fine, but never at the 4x speed even when the disk was rated as such. I tried to upgrade the firmware, drive worked worse. I just tried the 11/26 firware and now the drive doesn't work at all. When burning with Nero 6 Ultra I noticed that the buffer never stayed above 60%. It would go back to 5% and then back to 60%. The drive really NEVER worked like it was supposed to. My advice is to spend just a little more money and get the pioneer 106. My cousin has it and it will burn nany damn thing. Bottom line, this drive SUCKS 100%!!!! Waste of money!!!! Buyer beware!!! Comments posted by Cole from Other, November 30, 2003. Rated this writer 1 of 10. |

Make sure you check your recordings for pixelation when you are in a warm room. It damaged 9 of my disks. Four wouldnt even work when inserted i the dvd player. There is a Region Free version of firmware 2.23 out at www.rpc1.org Both for the 201 and the 203. I'm still getting excellent results with Ritek G04 +/-R discs. These are branded: 'Grade A Media' 'DVD 4x' with some lines to write on. Compatibility: Purple +R Ritek's - 100% on PC, XBox and PS2 and standalones Orange -R RItek's - 90% on PC, 70% on XBox, 100% on PS and 100% on standalones. All burnt with Nero 60023 - no special settings, just the defaults. I think the failures are attributable to 'fussy' hardware. Good value discs too, £20 for a spindle of 25 discs at a local Computer Market. Btw, Tried some unbranded TDK discs, 2x write only and not very good at all. Thanks, B1. To all who have problems flashing firmware upgrades: 1. Disable DMA mode on your Optorite first. 2. Terminate all applications. 3. Flash the upgrade. 4. Reboot and normal up DMA and applications. I had the same problem with v216 and a friend said to do the above when I went to v223. This works. Comments posted by Ross from Other, November 20, 2003. Rated this writer No rating. |
