Bought this burner 3 weeks ago for $179. Have burned 3 DVD+RWs and a few CDRs. Absolutely no problems at all. Was very easy to install. The softwares it comes with are not that great. Downloaded Nero 6 and it works fabulously. I strongly recommend this burner over to any other $200+ burners. Happy burning! Comments posted by mayurk from Other, August 11, 2003. For any of you with eject button problems who still have this problem, I e-mailed OptoRite Sales and received the following response the same day: "Hi ..., we found out that some drive's eject button does not function very well. But instead of having you send back the unit, we have a solution to address this problem. It is a very simple procedure and only requires you to remove the panel. As soon as I receive the parts from our factory, I will mail it to you along with the instructions. Is the address stated in your previous email where I should send the parts to? Best regards, OptoRite Sales" Comments posted by wallnut from Other, August 07, 2003. Rated this writer No rating. |

Got the drive about a week ago and have problems dealing with DVD+RW media. I used COMPUSA brand first, no luck, so I went and got Sony DVD+RW's (DPQ47L1) brand that Optorite's website said would work and still no luck. I have tried Nero 6, Ulead DVD MovieFactory, and DVD Decryptor, all with the same result. Burns fine, but once I put it back in the Drive it isn't recognized....COASTER! I have upgraded to the newest firmware (2.11) with no luck. DVD-RW from verbatim seem to work fine. Anyone else had this problem with +RW's? Comments posted by VisualJ from Other, August 03, 2003. I installed the Optorite 203 without any problems whatsoever, however, the “Sonic My DVD”, and “B’s Recorder” are not the best of software for working with DVD material. I downloaded Nero .6 (instantly recognized drive), and it seems to be the best right now. Using an AVERY capture card and Neo software, I ran an analog VHS tape through and digitized to DVD quality. I then used DVDShrink, (AKA the Mop Squeezer), and edited out unwanted material. Using a 5% compression ratio, I was able to reduce the size of the movie to fit on one Maxell 2X DVD-r disk (Very good buys on e-Bay in bulk). Once again, as a newbie, I used Nero 6 to burn my first DVD backup, about 28 minutes, and the Optorite 203 performed flawlessly. The final disk would not play in my PC DVD drive, “caused XP to re-boot”, but did play beautifully in the PC Optorite burner, and my Apex AD-1201 stand alone player (no region code required). The quality of the DVD is outstanding when played on my Panasonic 47” wide screen. There is a small problem with the eject button…(patience). I would rate this drive as a 9. John.... Upgraded firmware to 2.11. Still the driver recognizes Princo 4x as 2x. I tried couple of different media and all of them works just fine although there is speed recognition problme with cheap media. Comments posted by Andy from Other, August 01, 2003. Rated this writer No rating. |

Bought this writer about 2 weeks ago. So far it has been a fair wighter. Had an nec 1100 before. Bought it because of the dual format and the price (199.00)Running the 2.09 firmware update. Have been able to burn dvd-r, dvd+r, and dvd+rw with out to many problems. So over all I'm am pleased. Have not had any problems with the eject button either. I own a mintek 1600, go video 850, and a appex 1200 dvd players. In the past all 3 have proven to be really good dvd players for their cheep price. They all 3 have been able play all of my backed up dvd, svcds and most vcds that where made with my nec writer. With the new optorite only my mintek and my go video dvd players can play the dvd back ups made by this writer. My appex 1200 chokes on the backs up. Just keeps trying to load the disk. I'v used nero 6.0 the latest version of bha and many other writing software. Just the same thing over and over. Other then that I'm am happy with it. I am writing to echo Captain Tinker's comment. I current have a Optorite and tried to burn several movies, and hundred of MP3s on DVD+R's. I used Nero, DVD Decrypter and CloneDVD. However, those DVD+R's could not be played on CyberHome 402 set-top DVD player. I do realize CyberHome 402 may have problem reading DVD+R. I also tried to burn those with a NEC ND-1100A and those DVD+Rs can be read on the CyberHome. I also found that TDK IndiDVD 420N has similar problem. Just hope there would be some utilities available soon to make those DVD+R more set-top box friendly later. Anyone tried a NEC ND-1300A before? I really want to have a Dual-Drive that can burn everything and those can be played on anything! Comments posted by netDVD from Other, July 28, 2003. Rated this writer No rating. |

Wow, this actually is really a very nice burner. I haven't had any problems with it recording anything... No Frisbee's anyway. I haven't tried the HD-Burn yet, but it does do a good job recording to DVD-R/RW, and DVD+R/RW's. I think I have seen something somewhere on my machine about it being set to region 2 as well, as others have written, but it hasn't been a problem for me yet. (At least, I don't think so...) The only thing I can think of as a negative for this drive is that I can't find any way to change the bitsettings to mode 2 on the DVD+R and +RW's so that it makes those discs compatible with some set top DVD players. Optorite tech support says that they don't have a utility to do that, and none of the burning programs I've used yet (Nero, MyDVD, etc...) have given me the option to change the book type to DVD-ROM over DVD+R/W. Utility at http://www.dvdplusrw.org/resources/bitsettings_pc.html doesn't work with this drive yet either. Overall though, I am very satisfied with it. I had some unusual problems with the drive. I think the region code was locked on Region 2. Alcohol program viewed the drive as Region 2 (RPC-2). DVDXCOPY and DVDXCOPY XPRESS 3.0 would create the image, but failed to burn. Lots of coasters created. I don't think I just got a bad drive, because most everyone else seemed to have no problems. Bad Luck. :( Comments posted by Pattywhack from Other, July 25, 2003. Rated this writer 6 of 10. |

The drive works fine for most of the cases. I have tried burning a few DVD+R memorex, they burnt fine using nero and played fine on my standalone JVC DVD player. I bought 10 pack 4x DVD-R from CD technology which uses Princo media. The problem with that is the firmware doesnt read it as 4x media but reads it as 2x media. Great drive. I have had the optorite for about 1 month, and have burned over 30 dvdr's +&-. Have had no problems with the eject button. Have burned Memorex + and - r & rw's , Verbatim +r's , DVDPro -r's,and office max brand -r's, all work great. Out of 30 burns I have NO coasters,(YET). I also owne Memorex DVD+RW/+R burner, also good burner, this one is just as good, maybe better. Software used: DVDSHRINK, NERO, and B's recording studio. Very happy with this drive, would buy another one! Did up date firmware to 209 off OptoRite site. Comments posted by ckart0 from Other, July 22, 2003. Rated this writer 10 of 10. |

Failing with all -R and -RW Media I tried - Princo, Intenso, Emtec. RWs got unusable. Only one successful DVD+ burn (the Thats+R shipped, but its not to get in my area) HD-Burn working fine with latest Nero and various CD-Brands. But overall rating is very poor - not working with any DVD- media I tried. Comments posted by george from Other, July 19, 2003. Rated this writer 1 of 10. |

Great drive. I have had the optorite for about 2 months now and have burned over 100 dvdr's. Just have to agree with the eject button. Sometimes it seems like you did not press it hard enough but it opens on the second try . rarely happens. I have burned memorex + and - r's tdk +and - r's verbatim +r's ritek +r's office max brand =r's all work great. out of 100 burns i have maybe 5 coasters 4 being user error. I previously owned nec1100a +r burner also good burner i fel this one is just as good or maybe better. software used dvdxcopy instantdvd nero b's recording studio. dvd xcopy express does not recognize ,no big deal since the software sucks. overall great drive buying another one! This writer is excellent. I would have given it a 10 but for the poor software selection that comes with it. You will have to purchase Instantcopy or something to write to it. The actual writing for a full disc takes about 20 minutes. Save yourself a hundred bucks over the Sony. Comments posted by eddie d from Other, July 05, 2003. Rated this writer 9 of 10. |

Can't update to firmware 2.09, I get and I\\O Error when using the Flash program. Also, wierd error when trying to burn HD Burn CDs in Nero, exits out. Otherwise, DVD\\CD burning has been great. Just bought this unit and after updating firmware to v2.09 all is fine. Also upgraded Nero to v5.5.10.**. It does seem that the biggest problem with it is the brand of media used - stick to a primary brand - the same applies to HD Burn (would not write to Infiniti 730mb 48x white tops, but perfect to Sony 700mb multicolurs)and look out for long filenames (if a warning pops up don't ignore it!. The eject button on mine works like any other eject provided that nothing touches the plastic facia (especially along the top edge - take it out of the slot and try it). This drive is a dream. Only made 2 coasters but that was at the fault of CloneCD. For some reason CloneCD burned a Fujifilm +RW disc fine, then trying the same dvd backup it screwed up 2 Fujifilm +R discs. Nero works great with this drive and I have used the HDBurn function 6 times with no faults. The latest firmware (2.09) enables the 8mb cache so thats a plus. I have absolutely no complaints about this drive except the dang eject button!
