| Bought the Sony DRU-500a, System ran rather slow at 1x the first time i used it , second time i ended up with a coaster. Flashed to version 10f of the Firmware and everything now working fine. I have written over 20 DVD's with both data and home video's. Used Infinity and Datawrite disks with no problem, have now tried all format +-R and +- RW and all work perfectly. 10 out of 10 for A Good Product. | I've had this drive since October and only made 1 coaster because I hit the cancel button. Otherwise its great. I am verifying that this drive DOES burn Ritek 1x DVD-R at 2x! I just ordered a set of the Ritek 1x - Not the certified 2x and it writes flawlessly. Made copies of copies using disc to disc on the fly copy in Nero (on the same IDE channel) no sweat. Only problem I have had is that it does not recognize Memorex DVD-RW version 1.1 Have used Sony, Memorex, and Maxell DVD+RW no problem. If you've had a problem its either your config or potentially a defective drive, but my experience has been VERY good. If you can still find it.. buy it. | This drive works very well for me! Installed it, and it was detected immediately. Burning with Recordnow DX that came with it works great. | I have had this DVD writer for 3 months now. Have only made two coasters due to Nero. Once I switched to the supplied RecordNow DX (RecordNow upgrade on internet) I have not had any problems. I have also used Ulead DVD MovieFactory 2 and Pinacle Studio 8.5.8 with no problems for home video. | After reading the reviews of this drive and attempting to buy one for a month, I saw that Circuit City had one that could only be purchased via shipping from warehouse. I jumped on it and had it shipped overnight (extra $29). I can confidently say that I am extremely pleased with this drive. I installed the 1.0f firmware update. I have used Sony DVD+RW, Memorex DVD+RW, Philips DVD+RW, and Verbatim <u>+</u>R with this drive successfully. It must be noted, though, that in attempting to burn a DVD movie with Nero 5.5.10.0, it would only play on my computer. I installed the Veritas RecordNow program that came with the drive and every movie burned with the drive and RecordNow work on all my standalone players (Apex 1200 and Aiwa DV370). I am having difficulty finding 4x media though. All DVD+RW's I used burned @ 2.4x (~24 min for 4.4 gb) DVD<u>+</u>R's burned @ 2x (limited by disc speed, not drive; ~28 min for 4.4 gb) Like many, I think the enclosed software sucks (even though I use the Veritas RecordNow program). I mainly use DVD2SVCD, CCE, and DVDMaestro. | Great! I picked up the last one of these at best buy, upgraded the firmware, and tested some discs. The dvd’s I tested all seem to work fine and generally are of good quality construction – Sony, Memorex, Verbatim costing about $4 each. Interesting Stuff- - make sure you use a new IDE cable (like the one that comes with the drive) - make sure the DRU500A is the MASTER (I use cable select, and set my other drive to slave) - one or both of these was the reason for ALL of my errors in NERO, and other writing software. Now nero and others work PERFECTLY with this drive. - Seriously, I’ve heard of all kinds of errors in Nero that others experience and even I had them…until I used the two fixes above. - VERY IMPORTANT – unlike cd’s, when recording dvd’s be sure to remove all dust and contaminants from the drive tray and writing side of the dvd. Dvd players will not be able to read anything past a major error (shrapnel on the disc at writing time). I started using RW discs because of this. Highly Recommended buy. | UK (Scotland). Received the drive yesterday from DABS having waited 7 weeks due to demand. Installation of drive was a breeze, software loaded ok, downloaded 1.0f firmware and installed also. Followed advice on this forum (thanks everybody) and drive was installed as Secondary Master. Couldn't wait to try (midnight before I got home and had finished installation) - so dragged a few random avi's in to MyDVD and wrote to DVD+RW. Biggest worry was my Sony DAVS-300 surround system - the player has been difficult to find compatible media for (eg. VCD). Popped the DVD+RW in the DAV-S300 and held my breath - surely it won't return a "no disc" and shatter all my dreams!. No worries, played perfectly. Still to experiment with other media and, granted, the DVD+RW that works DID come with the drive, but I'M VERY HAPPY. At £249 (incl VAT) this has to be a bargain - other single format drives are equally priced??. Can't wait to try the DV download to DVD through myDVD. | I bought this unit 1 week ago. tricks. connect it to the secondary Ide as Master. Upgrade to firmware 1.0f. Ads- fast writer 24X CDR, 2,4X DVD+RW and 2X in DVD-R. Some problems with Sky DVD+-R (didn´t recogniced the disk). Brands used Precision CDR 700mb, TW II DVD-R 4,7 GB, Verbatin DVD-R 4,7 GB, Sony DVD+RW. | I just bought this drive from Best Buy for $349.00 (hard to find!). I upgraded Nero to the latest version (it now recognizes the Sony), and upgraded the firmware (it will now burn DVD+R at 4x speed). My old Pioneer DVD-A03 has been recently skipping on every movie I backed up from my collection towards the end of the movie (last few chapters). I just reburned some movies on the Cheap DVD-RW pro media from Meritline (1.15 per disc) which was previously bunrned on the A03) and they play rock solid with no glitching on all chapters! They will only burn at 1x speed though on the DVD-RW pro media, but since it's so cheap, who cares!. I also tested the Sony DVD+RW that came with the drive.. it burned a movie at 2.4 speed perfectly! | This is a great Drive... I have used dvd+r dvd+rw dvd-r, and cd-r's, all with no problems. so far I can not get DVD-r 1x media to burn at 2x even though I have the latest 1.0f firmware. The media I tried was OPTODISK, which some people have used at 2x. so you might have different results... other wise I have not made a single coaster with it (which is great)... | First of all, I'd like to thank everyone else ahead of me who posted their comments about this drive. All of those posts were helpful in regards to buying this drive. I finally was able to find the DRU500A. There is a reason that it's difficult to get a hold of, and that's because it's so good. I've burned DVDs using +r, -r, +rw, -rw and have yet to create a coaster. I've tried TDK, Memorex, and Verbatim media without any problems whatsoever. My DVDs play in the PC DVD drives at home, as well as my home player (AIWA 370) which is quite old. The AIWA unfortunately doesn't support +/-RW, but plays both +/-r. My XBOX also recognizes the DVDs burned with the DRU500A. I've upgraded the firmware to 1.0f, and burning DVDs takes hardly any time at all. | First I bought Pioneer DVD-recorder returned it. Found more options with my Sony DVD-recorder after reading all of the comments on VCDHELP.COM. 1. Sony DRU500A is worth the price ($300-$350) after the firmware upgrade. I have made more then 10 home movies and burned on known and unknow brand name: a. Cheap one DVD-R 4X burned less then 30min (DVD-R 4X/$2.97 from Meritline.com) b. Memorex DVD-RW 2.4X burned less then 1hr (from Fry's Elect) c. Verbatim DVD+R 2.4x burned less then 1hr (from Fry's Elect) 4 Capture Card used: ATI-All-In-Wounder worked best with MMC 7.6 enables to MPEG-2 DVD coding while capturing to hard drive. (MMC 7.7 did not work properly with WindowsXP.) Also supported with NeoDVD package 5. DVD authoring software used: NeoDVD very nice after the upgrade Easy to create Chapters and custom menues. Is best for it's price around $50.00. Don't forget to download the upgrade. NeoDVD Realtime DVD recording still not usable do not try it. NeoDVD authoring time for 2hrs movie with "Best" settings took about 30min. Faster then DVDit >1:20hr. 6. DVD Burning Software I used: a. DVDit took forever to author and burn > 2hrs could not burn DVD-R 4X with it. Engine had some problems. b. Nero Express capable of durning CD/DVD's free upgrade to existing Nero 5.x available. | I have had this drive since Mid December. I have had no problems. I did upgrade to firmware 1.0f and love the higher speed +RW burns. Have burned DVD-R, DVD+r,DVD+RW, CD-r, and CD-RW on cheap media. Software with the package sucks (changing my rating of the drive from 10 to 9), but lots of other software (Video Studio 6,DVDit, DVDXcopy, Nero, etc.) works great with the drive. | Got it circuit city with the 4 year warranty for 350 +35. ----Enclosed sony DVD+RW using DLA 3.58 - 615 meg enclosed software CD copies in 3.5 minutes from a master CD drive to this drive as slave on same ide channel. About 3meg per sec. Basically full speed 2.4x. Nice. ----Enclosed sony DVD+RW using nero 5.5.10.0 12 meg file copies instantly. NOTE------------>: I did NOT need to ----UNINSTALL----- DLA I just had to turn it off via the drive properties (win xp) ----Optodisk DVD-RW from newegg ($1.2 each) using nero 5.5.10.0 12 meg file takes 5 minutes mainly for formating (1+ min) and lead out (3+ minutes). I think there is a way to do multisession. Will try. DLA still installed and still turned off. Still looking for cheap 2x -RW. The Optodisk are 1x. Using f version firmware. Will try large copies within a week. | I bought 2 of these mainly for HDD backups. They seem to run well. The bundled software is sufficient to make the drives operational, but not much more. It is antiquated end of life, givaway stuff. I have successfully burned 2 sided Ritek Prime disc 9.4 Gb DVD-Rs at 1X and the included Sony DVD+RWs at 2X Still looking for cheap 4X DVD media. | Great drive so far. So far I've burned a 2 hour home video using Ulead DVD Workshop and latest firmware 1.0f. I burned it to really cheap Ritek DVD-R disks (76 cents each at SuperMediaStore when you buy 100 with coupon code ritekdvdoff7). It burned at 2X instead of the 1X that I was expecting. 4.4 GB finished burning in around 25 minutes. I was then able to play these DVD-Rs in Panasonic and RCA Standalone players.
