| To add to my previous review: I had Firmware 10c Datasafe Media 4.7 DVD-RW (Yellow) not recognised. Updated Firmware to 10f Currently writing 1st DVD-RW disk! Up until now I have been using DATASAFE Media 'Datasafe 2x Speed 4.7gb General Purpose DVD-R' (Silver Ones) to make my own Movie disks that play on my stand alone MUSTEK. | Bought this thing over a month ago, but I didn't have any media. I put it into a firewire/usb2.0 enclosure. Upgraded the firmware tonight to version f after I received my 4x Ritek DVD-R media from mertiline last week. So far, 1 attempt at DVD-R burn @ 4x with Nero; no problem. | I had my burner for two weeks now, at first had some issues with the DLA thtat installs from the CD, removed that and is working great now, I'm using Record Now Max 4.5, NERO 5.5.9.17, Clone Cd, Gear Pro DVD and had have no issues, I had backed up several DVD's using DVDxCOPY and backed up several CD's data, audio and no problems to report. Have the drive is set up as a master on the secondary IDE channel by itself, as I have a RAID controller and the Primary IDE channel to put the rest of the Drives. Used Fuji Disks and Ritek "EL CHEAPO" disks no problems, running firmware "F". The bundle soft is "SUCKY" "SUCKY" to say the least other than that Sony has done an incredible job with this drive. | Great drive. I installed the latest firmware and it burns TDK +RW, TDK +R,Sony +R/W, and Fuji +R/ +RW and all played in my Pioneer 343 unit with no problems. If you upgrade the firmware, just make sure you go back and enable the DMA for the controller. This drive was installed in my Dell 8200 with no problems.Easiest install ever with win XP pro. Also, didnt have any problems with the drive tray opening (when open/close), even though it is a tight fit. I also searched and searched and finally snagged one at Best Buy.I also noticed that Dell no longer has it listed on their site. any ideas?? One thing that i noticed with my setup anyhow, was that i had some problems burning with DVDycrpter and DVDXcopy when i had the DLA from Veritas installed.I just removed DLA and now everything works like it should. This site and the postings everyone has been making has been a great resource for info before and since i bought the drive. Lots of good information here.thanks... | I love it ! I am using it for my DV home videos and finally to be able to watch my movies on DVD has been awesome. I was close to buying cheaper a DVD+RW only writer as I am pretty sure this is going to be the leading format but changed my mind when Sony upgraded this one to 4x on DVD+RW. I have not had one single coaster DVD or CD. I have been using CCE and Tmpgenc for my encoding, but was surprised of the quality and speed of the encoding done by the enclosed app myDVD. | Update on my post below: I purchased a Memorex DVD-R disc and successfully burned it in my Rev "F" DRU-500A drive, so I really don't think there's anything wrong with the drive itself. I'm starting to think that the kHypermedia that I'm having trouble with might be from a different manufacturer (or maybe just a different production batch) than the kHypermedia that others here are reporting no problems with. Regardless, I'd advise caution if you plan to buy kHypermedia for use with this drive. Clearly it doesn't work for everyone using the DRU-500A drive, even with the latest Rev "F" firmware. | I absolutely love this drive. I have used firmware 1.0f since its release and have had no issues. I am burning to media that runs the full range: from cheap princo to overpriced sony media. This drive only gave me one issue and that was my fault. I forgot to enable DMA on that IDE channel and was experiencing horrible CPU utilization and poor performance. I really have to hand it to SONY for rolling out a device with such great value. | When i first purchased this drive, about 2 months ago, i really had doubts, from all of the user feedback, and i even thought about returning the drive several times. Boy would i be kickin' myself in the @$$ now if i had followed through! This drive is FREAKIN' AWESOME! There are really no other words to explain it. Every media i've thrown at it works(fujifilm failed with previous firmwae, but now works with 1.0f). It writes both + and -R media at 4X, sony's firmware upgrades have stayed on top of the game, it now reads dvd's(i've only tested DVD decrypter) at 4X, it burns my once 1X media at 2X, no media i have tested has failed with 1.0f(media tested: Khypermedia-R, yes it does work, i promise at 2X, Sony-,+R/W, fujifilm+R, verbatim+R, and yes memorex+R, and i have not burned one coaster with 1.0f. Maybe some folks got bad drives, but i am having a field day with this drive...oh yeah Office max has Khypermedia-R(2X) 10pk for $15($10 with mail in rebate, but i don't do rebates) for those that have had success with them. I think i previously ranked this drive a 8 when i first recieved it, but now this drive definately recieves a 12(ok, ok i guess i'll give it a 10 since that is the highest allowable). | Just installed the drive the other day. Used Nero 5.5.9.17 and successfully burned a movie to the included Sony DVD+RW disc, even before upgrading the firmware from level "C". Tried a KHypermedia at 1X and made a coaster... recording stopped at 9%. Upgraded firmware to level "D" (at the time I didn't realize there was a later one available), tried another KHypermedia, got another coaster at 9% complete. Found the level "F" firmware and updated to it. Tried another KHypermedia and got yet another coaster at 9% complete. For fun, I tried a 4th KHypermedia at 2X burn speed, and got another coaster at 9%. Unlike the other poster below with similar sounding problem, Nero does *not* fail in the "Test" mode. I'm not sure why some people are reporting no problem with KHypermedia while others like me can't create a friggin disc. Sony drive seems nice, but this whole bit about having to match media to the drive really sucks. Off to the store tomorrow to buy a few different types of -R discs. Sigh. | Bought this drive from Dell, after a lengthy delay. My first two Memorex DVD+R attempts using the included Sonic MyDVD turned into coasters. After firmware update I have burned 7 great videos using MyDVD to create videos created on Pinnacle's Studio 7. Just tried using Khypermedia's DVD-R disc and burned a coaster. Received the same error message from MyDVD as I originally had with the Memorex discs, but it seems to have made it further than with the Memorex's. | I have upgrade successfully to 1.0f but i find read speeds of dvd video roms haven't increased to 4.0 as Sony said they should.With smartripper and dvd decrypter max read speed is still 2.0 as it was with 1.0 d. And just to make it better, the new firmware version 1f not only adds 4x write capability to +R format, it also recognizes many more cheap media in their correct speed!! For example the drive now writes the Ritek media at 2x!! I am REALLY happy about this, since I currently have half of my 50 pack of Riteks and now I can write them at 2x!! Thanks Sony!! | I have just bought this and it works perfectly. First I tested if it could read DVD's burned on my external Phillips Recorder i +format - no problem. Then I made a DVD with two movies in cvd format with Ulead DVD Workshop and burned a +DVD (Sony and Verbatin) - no problem - my external DVD recorder could read this too. Last I made the same DVD on a -format (Princo) and tested this on my two external DVD player - no problem. The final test was on my friends Playstaion2 - guess what - no problem. The biggest challange was to convert my old svcd movies to DVD compliant CVD format. The GOP structure I had used was wrong (was not accepted by Ulead DVD Workshop). The right one is in TMPenc/DVD. | Bought this drive one week ago at Best Buy for $350.00 I have burned 10 movies on Maxell DVD+R & DVD+RW with complete succes using Nero 5.5.9.17 and DVD X COPY. Have also burned CDRs & CDRWs. I love this drive! This is the drive to buy! To avoid probs you must install it on your secondary IDE Channel by itself as a primary drive (Jumpers on Drive set to Master). Also upgrade firmware to version D. Firmware version E will be out by December 9 to increase drive speed to 4X. | Okay Drive is Great, Have tried the following media with no coasters TDK DVD-R (3) TDK DVD-RW (1) Sony DVD+RW (1) Ritek DVD-R (4) I burned Ritek and TDK using the latest Nero 5.5. I burned the -RW and +RW using Pinnacle Studio 8. All of those burned are DVD-Video and they are recognized by my standalone DVD player Pioneer DV-C503 Overall this drive is great, you just have to find the right medium. | Got this drive almost a week now. Updated the firmware. Copied a DVD to a "Maxell DVD-RW Ver 1.1" (1x speed) and was recognized by my Pioneer 525 and 444 ;-). Still have to try it with the included Sony DVD+RW and some other DVD's that i bought like "Maxell DVD-R for general ver 2.0" and "Fuji DVD+R". For CD's it could read my "That's Write" CD-RW, "Nashua" CD-RW. I also burned Fuji CD-R's without problems. I am happy with it and glad i bought this drive instead of the Pioneer DVR-A05. It got all these extra formats and burns CD's a lot quicker. I haven't burned too much DVD's yet...still have to learn more how to do a DVD-9 to DVD-R. I decided to get this drive, since i read that DVD+R/RW can store more than 120 minutes due to VBR encoding. | Hey all- I did a review/dvd media test on this drive on Nov 27th. I figured I'd throw in a lil bit of info out there. So far the drive is still working really well. After my burn tests with various DVD-R media I've noticed the Maxell media has burned perfectly with no probs. The only coaster I made with this media was due to a bad sector on the drive which gave me a write error. After some harddrive maintenance burned another Maxell perfectly fine. Soooo for data Maxell is working great for all that. Also Maxell CD-R works well with the drive. Still haven't attempted a DVD video project but, I have a wedding video to edit and author on DVD sooo I'll post the results when that project finishes. | I got this drive about a month,and have burn couple movie with DVD workshop no problem,DVD-R/DVD+R/DVD+RW,I even make VCD on DVD with DVD workshop and TMPGEnc got great result,The drive have no cons, very reliable, I try disks brought from ebay DVD-R 2x(about $1.40/piece)and DVD+R (about $2.00/piece),and the sony DVD+RW (came with),all works,and I have ordered the 4x DVD-R disks on there way,willing to do more test later, but I do have the same nero dosen't colse DVD+R problem,also Easy VCD dosen't recognize the DRU500a as a CD writer,I have to use my old plextor to burn VCD,After all, this is a great buy,all those problems mentioned above only related to the softwares.
