| Bought this burner at BestBuy. Did a test burn on the included DVD+RW and that worked fine. I then bought a 5 pack of Memorex DVD-R and made nothing but coasters. Nero will try to start the burn, and hang during the "Lead In" process. I let is sit there for 20 min, and always had to end task on Nero to get out. Also tried generic DVD-R media, and the burning software included with the drive. Same results. Sony tech support could only offer "Buy Sony Brand Media". | What more can I say. I love it. Works well for creating those nifty DVD home movies. Perfect as Christmas gifts!! I was able to successfully burn 2 +RW and 1 -R. No coasters yet! | Just got the DRU-500A at BestBuy on Saturday. They just hit the shelves (only 2 in stock) and I have been waiting for this drive, so I paid the $349 list price even though I had one on order elseshere for $312. Could not wait any longer! This is my first DVD burner and "so far" I am happy it. I have burned some video onto DVD+R and DVD+RW using the included MyDVD. So far, both of these play flawlessly in my JVC standalone, my version 7 PS2 and my MACs/PCs. I have burned some data onto DVD+RW's using both the included Veritas software and with the latest version of NERO. I had the same problem as the earlier poster had with NERO not recognizing the drive at first, but after I downloaded the latest version (5.5.9.14) from the Nero site, all is FINE! My Roxio 5.0 Platinum (fully updated) has a problem writing at the rated speeds with this drive. Waiting for an update but I much prefere Nero over the Roxio suite anyway so I am happy. I was surprised to find out that Roxio direct CD even works with the drive, but have my reservations about this until Roxio officially supports the unit. Also, the drive comes with Veritas DLA (Drive letter Access) that will be available for download. I will opt for this solution when the download becomes available. I will be trying some DVD-R's soon but can't see this being a problem. Also, I plan on using only DVD-R for data backup due to current media costs being lower on these disks. Since all of my DVD players read the +R/+RW disks, this is my format of choice due to the inproved performance of writing to this media. I was reluctant to get a "plus" drive, now it seems a "plus" drive is all I really needed! Oh well, -R media is still chaper and the drive was as cheap as most others and FASTER! | Picked it up at Best Buy for $315 ($350 less 10% coupon). Using the provided Record Now software, I tried copying a couple of non-copy protected DVD movies. Using DVD+RWs (Sony) I was 2 for 2 -> Direct copy from source disk in my DVD-Rom drive. Each plays fine on my Mintek 1600 DVD player. Using DVD+R (memorex) I was 2 for 2. However, neither disk plays on the Mintek. They play fine on the computer. Using DVD-R (Memorex), I got only 1 successful burn out of three tries. The finished disk plays fine in the Mintek. One coaster came while copying directly from DVD-rom, the other was from an image on the hard drive. I'm not sure if the Record Now software is employing any buffer underrun protection. The burns failed at the 10 -15% threshold. Being first on your block with a new drive leads to the obvious software compatibility problems: Nero, Primo DVD, and VOB Instant CD-DVD (all latest versions) all fail to recognize the drive. Potentially, a very nice drive. I hope some of the DVD software packages catch up with the drive before my 30 day return period lapses. I can't afford many more coasters. | I had trouble with the drive not being able to recognize Memorex dvd-rw media (version 1.1). I don't know why. Other than that the drive has been fine. I've bought some dvd+rw media for the drive, and after reading some of the posts I'm going to followup with other brands of -r/rw media to see if they work OK. | I got the Sony DRU500A from CompUSA ($350) on Oct 8, 2002. I had just a little bit of trouble with writing to a DVD-RW and DVD+RW (it was probably my computer - PIII 700mhz, 320MB PC100, Win2K). I reformatted and installed a fresh Win2K, burnt a few DVD-RW and success! One thing I don't like about the Sony DRU500A (or maybe it's the current DVD writing technology) is that it takes a very long time to close a DVD-RW (Memorex v1.1). I captured a 7-second DV via firewire, used Sonic MyDVD to author it, it transcoded it, erased the DVD-RW, wrote on it, then closed it. Total time to write a 7-second DVD clip: ~20min. Here's the breakdown. Captured 7-sec DV via firewire and saved: <1min Launched Sonic MyDVD and built a short DVD project: <1min MyDVD transcoded (encoded) the 7-sec video file: ~1min MyDVD erased the DVD-RW (I wrote something on it previously): ~3min MyDVD wrote on the DVD-RW: ~3min MyDVD closed (wrote "Lead-out:) the DVD-RW: ~15min When I looked at what was burnt physically on the disc itself, it burnt about 30% of 'stuff' on it. I wonder why when the duration of my video is 7 seconds. In conclusion, it is a great device. Even though I dislike the slow closing time of a DVD media, I still give it a 10. | Picked up the Sony DRU500A from CompUSA also, excellent recorder, copied some unprotected foreign DVDs, no problems, next project will be PS2 and XBOX. Only problem is none of my recording programs recognize it (nero 5599, BHA gold), only sony's in box veritas program.
