| i bought it from compusa. it worked fine for sony dvd+rw, memorex dvd-r and fuji dvd+r. my first 3 burnings went well using Nero and Sonic MyDVD. !!! when i tried the cheap brandless dvd-r(s) and dvd-rw(s) i ordered online, it wouldn't recognize any of the dvd-rw(s). !!! at first, it didn't recognize any of the cheap dvd-r(s) as well. then after 20 ejects and re-inserts it started to recognize them. when i try to burn them though, it would get stuck after 15-20%. then the DVD-R goes to garbage. so far no success with the 25pk of cheap dvd-r s. and the 50pk DVD-RWs would not even get recognized by the drive. !!! but thats not all. after failing to write on the DVD-Rs, the whole drive completely died on me. nothing would work. it wouldnt recognize any media whatsoever. !!! i had to go back to compusa and exchange it with a new one. the new one works with Sony DVD+RWs so far. it looks like i am stuck with Sony, Memorex and Fuji brands. i am afraid of ordering other cheap ones. if you are planning to buy this drive make sure you get a replacement plan. it can die on you. | I picked this drive up at the local Fry's in Texas last week. So far I have'nt found any software that supports DVD Video other than the Sonic DVD that came with the drive and when I tried to burn a movie with it I got the error that it didnt support the mpg format. I have not been able to get the drive to work with nero even with the latest patch. I am working with one of the engineers at Gear Software to try and get it to work with their software right now also. So far the only thing I have succesfully burned is data using Roxio and their latest patch. | Bought the drive from Dell. I have burned DVD video using Nero 5.5.9.14. The media used was Sony DVD+RW and Verbatim DVD-RW every disc worked perfectly in my Pioneer c503 player. I used Sonic DVDit PE v2.5 to author the DVD. Very happy with this drive!. However, I reformatted and Installed a Full Version of Windows XP no service packs before using the drive. | OK Im one of the people that Like this but I am having trouble burning Fuji DVD+R media. I have burned 4 DVD+R that have ended up as coasters. DVD-R are all fine. It happend when I use Nero. Sony DVD RW DRU-500A could not perform end of Disc at once, Burn Process failed at 2.5 (3,450 Kb/s) like the burner but if anyones got any Ideas let me know. | Bought this drive and returned it a week later... Very disappointed with it. It burned to the included +RW disc no problem, and also to +R discs. But it made coasters of 6 -R disc of various brands - all were recorded at 1x. It errored out in the exact place on all discs regardless of what I was burning - data, DVD video, or ISO. In some of the message forums that I frequent several people have the same problem as I did. I will be buying the Cendyne rebadged Pioneer A04 at office max for $199 tomorrow. | I bought the drive at CompUSA on 10/13. I could not find a program that recognized All of the writing modes of drive. Roxio's EasyCD - recognized the drive, but would only write CD-r/rw. Nero would write DVD+RW fine on Sony media, but only made coasters with Memorex DVD+R's. (I had bought 2 5 pack's at BestBuy for $7.95 a pack). Today (10/24) Roxio posted an upgrade to EasyCD and now I am alble to write all modes with the drive without a problem - no more coasters! - I have only made data disks and on two of three desktop PC's and two out of two laptops I tried the recorded disk's (DVD+R and DVD+RW)on, recognized the disks without a problem. Nero should have an update out 10/31, and should provide full support for the drive. As soon as the software catch's up with the hardwire I think this will be a great drive. | Had to disconnect my original DVD-Rom drive to get it to work with my Dell 8200 XP Pro (blue screen of death No_more_IRP_stack_locations?). Once resolved, installed MyDVD, connected my Sony miniDV camera to firewire, pulled in 1 hour of video (4 GB Mpg file), created a couple chapters along the way, burn result to DVD+R (Verbatim 2.4x) and DVD+RW media (Sony RW came with unit) without a hitch (40 minute to burn and finalize). | This drive has just arrived on this side of the pond - I installed it last Friday. So far it has burnt DVD+R and DVD+RW without problems but made two coasters with no name DVD-R blanks. That could be the crappy media. Both Ulead Studio 6.5 and DVD workshop know about it and will use it. Nero 5599 is not all that impressed, nor is NeoDVDplus4. | I dunno about the media issue. I bought sony media to go with the sony drive, and so far the only thing that's burned successfully is a DVD+RW. With DVD+R the burn fails during the lead out saying that there is an invalid command in the stream. DVD-R only makes it about 80% of the way through then dies. | This is a great drive. I have used both Nero and RecordNow to burn to DVD+RW, DVD-R, and CD-RWs. Haven't made one coaster yet. If you are having problems, change the media that you are using. The drive does have some issues with older Verbatim 2X DVD-R,and also some Memorex & TDKs. I have been using mostly Imation DVD-Rs and have not had one problem. | Hello-Purchased the drive from Best Buy for $350 on 10/15. The employees said the drives were selling out as soon as they put them on the shelves. Installed in my PIII850 beater, no problems. Nero did not recognize the drive, so I enabled all the system recorders in the Advanced section of the Preferences menu. According to the Nero website, this drive is not fully supported yet. I tried the Ulead DVD trial program, but it seems almost identical to the DVD Plug In that comes with my Ulead Video Studio 6. I looked at the MyDVD that came with the drive, it looks OK. I'll try it. I want to learn how to use the Veritas backup software and get that going to back up my music and digital photo files. The free upgrades for RecordNow DX and MyDVD v4.5 are not available yet. I've burned a few videos converted from analog and digital sources, mostly through the DVD Plug In of Ulead Video Studio 6. This is my first DVD burner, I'm mostly experimenting with video encoding to get the best results on the DVD. This seems like a good drive, it should be popular, so software manufacturer's most likely will have strong support for it. I was able to burn DVD-R, DVD+R, -RW, +RW, all with no problems, I really love being able to use all the DVD formats currently available with one DVD Burner. | I bought this DVD Burner on Tuesday. Ive had very little problem, accept for the part neither Veritas Recordnow MAX 4.1 doesnt recognize it and neither does Prassi PrimoDVD. Those 2 tools are the 2 best apps for burning .img's...I have been using DVD Decrypter, witch is ok but not the best. I burned 2 dvd-r, they worked fine, i burned a dvd+rw that was from the box, i dont know why but it wont work in my dvd player nor anyones else, very weird. I also had a problem w/ a Sony DVD-RW. I had a bad burn, like it didnt start burning for 2mins, so i cancelled it and now when i put it in, like it laggs the pc, idk stupid Sony dvd-rw, and then i burned the other 1, at only 1x, i dont know why it only burned 1x, but msut of been the media..Its still burning so i dont know if it worked or not :P but overrall, i like it alot and goes well with my 48x cdrw. I remember in another post someone said that Veritas will be releasing a copy of Recordnow Max on the 23rd...I really hope so cause that software is amazing. | Bought one from CompUsa Last weekend. Installation was easy. No problems... Overall I give the drive high marks. I also agree with the comment another reviewer made about the front of drive - strange looking. It looks cool on the photo on the box, but in real life it looks a bit cheesy. Maybe it's because my PC case is black. Media compatibility: So far the only problem I've had was with a TDK DVD+R disk. It burned fine - no errors, but it won't read back at all in the DRU500A or play in a DVD player. (I have a Pioneer DV-C503 5 disc changer) All other media has worked perfectly: Sony DVD+RW (included with drive) TDK DVD+RW TDK DVD-R TDK DVD-RW CompUSA brand DVD-R (I think it's 1X media. It was cheap) Seems like there are a few media compatibility issues, but it doesn't seem any different than any other DVD drive... Once I find the right media, I'll just keep using it. Personally, I like DVD+RW. It burns fast (faster than the DVD-RW I tried) , the lead in - lead out burn time is shorter than DVD-R from what I've seen, and it plays back perfectly in my DVD player. The disks are a bit pricey, but they're re-useable... If something goes wrong with the burn you don't get a coaster... CDR Burning: Burns fast. 24X. Guess I don't need my 16X CDR drive anymore... Included Software comments: MyDVD 4.0 - I Don't like it. As others have commented, it re-encodes the audio to PCM format which takes up more DVD space. I went and bought Ulead DVD Movie Factory - It has a few issues - like you can't trim a video - but overall it's worked better than MyDVD and allows me to fit more per disc. | So far the drive is working as advertised. I di notice when first booting up my computer there is a clunking sound from the drive. Only on cold boots. Second thing I dislike is the color scheme. Why Sony made a silver colored tray door with a biege front panel is beyond me. So far I have tried all Memorex RW Media ver 1.1 -RW and there + RW and no problem. I also use Stomps RecordNow Platinum but it doesn't have the drivers for it. There version of DLA works fine so far. Stomp say new version of RecordNow Max will be relased on Oct.23 and will support the Sony DRU500a. Does everyone have the same color or have I got one they forgot to paint. | I returned my drive to Compusa today. IMHO I believe that there were some bad batches of these drives. I could not get it to us DVD-RW (Memorex) from Best Buy, while someone else had no problem at all. As with anything that is first out, this drive being able to handle all media types, there's going to be some bugs. I'm going to wait a couple of months for Sony to iron the bugs out. Also I might opt for getting the external drive when it comes out. One question I have is, is firewire faster than IDE/ATAPI? I wonder how the NEC's version of this drive will fare? | This is a followup post on my experience with the DRU-500a. I have now burned all supported media types with NO coasters. DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW and CDR/RW. About 15 disks total so far and not a single coaster. I "mostly" used NERO 5.5.9.14. I did NOT have the problem that the previous poster mentioned about NERO reporting errors when running other apps while burning. The Veritas software also works well. Roxio Platinum 5 SP4 does dot burn at full speeds. This drive is not yet supported by Roxio. Given Roxio's track record, they will be the last to support it. I prefer NERO over Roxio so this is not a problem for me. When I bought the drive, I also bought a spindle of 25 1x DVD-R's since they were supposed to be more compatable. All my DVD players play +R/RW media so I wish I would have not bought any -R media. The "plus" media burns so much faster. I guess I will just dump all of my old analog home videos to the -R's and be done with them. In my case +R/RW is the only way to go. -R/RW will almost never be used in my situation. I guess I could have just bought a +R/+RW drive and been fine. However, the Sony 500a is the fastest new drive out right now and really costs no more than the others so I am pleased! One tip, don't burn with nero (5.5.9.14) and do something else on computer. It will tell you that there was an error with closing of the disc, however, the disc works just fine. I have 2 players, GE 1101 and old DIVX ProScan. DVD-R's don't want to play in my GE and they play fine in the ProScan ... go figure. I used Optodisc DVD-R media from newegg.com, maybe that's the problem. I highly recommend this drive to anyone who hasn't decided which road to take, DVD+ or DVD-.
