Sometimes new technology works in the first release, but not often and DVD+- combo is not an exception. I got the drive off DELL. Kudos to them for following throgh with the unexpectedly large number of orders at $100 off retail price. As with everybody else, the enclosed DVD+RW worked fine. I also bought Verbatim DVD-RWs (not the infamous blacklisted 2X, but 2.4X) and KHypermedia DVD-R (cheap brand). There were issues with both brands using bundled software, which is a major piece of junk. The only working part was erasing DVD-RW and I did plenty of that. Both RecordNow and MyDVD errored out at the end of the recording phase rather consistently on both brands. I agree that media factor is important with this drive, but not entirely. NERO upgrade 5.*.*.17 worked with the media that RecordNow and MyDVD refused to accept. Another gripe about MyDVD is that it did not work with my analog capture card. Hauppauge is not even on the list of supported card vendors for this pathetic excuse of software. The bottom line: the drive is ok for early adopters willing to pay 10 times more per 1 MB of storage compared to CDs. Another note, ditch the bundled recording software and buy NERO. Just got my DRU500A well you all know it's the Sh!t so lets get to the meat. DVD-R tested with E Proformance: 25-pack 1 good but nero(with the oct 31 patch)said it had problems after verify but I played most of the vids off of it,and it seemed fine. Next 3 disk were costers. and I tryed with RecordNow no luck. So it's nice to know I bought 25 over priced costers. Memorex DVD+R/+RW 2.4X 3 of Each pack Not a care in the world but $23 for them. As for cd-r media the lead in takes 40sec were my old Sony DDCD-r rw drive took 20sec to lead. So thats a small let down on the DRU500A But im happy with my buy. jost got my dru500a a few days ago. burned hdd image to included sony +rw with no problems. second attempt was to make dvd from home vids using sony trv-140 digital8 and firewire. didn't burn direct to disc (that's my next project). software used was bundled sonic my dvd. media was tdk dvd-r. captured video to hdd. flawless. hit the big red "burn" button. nervously waited. success. reloaded dvd into drive. power dvd instantly recognized it. great menu's. haven't tried it in a stand alone yet though. will post more after further tests with different media. kindof leary about even trying different media after reading all these posts. Hey, for those of you concerned about not being able to burn on CHEAP media, Meritline has a page of CHEAP media you can buy and they say it WILL work with the Sony DRU500A. The cheapest is the Accu ($1.09 for 100 pack or even 0.95 for 500 pack). So, check it out, it's http://www.meritline.com/dvdmedforson.html Happy burning! I too have harnessed this drive finally! I'm using it primarily to transfer my analog 8mm home movies over to DVD. I capture in MYDVD then I also assemble clips/layout then instead of burning ( which ultimately fails most of the time using most any media ) I choose make dvd folder under tools. When finished, I open Nero 5.5.5.17, choose dvd video and locate & drag VIDEO_TS folder over and then burn it. So far success with Memorex+R, Fuji+R and HP+RW (for testing purpose) All play excellent on my Pioneer DV-c503 stand-alone purchased 2 years ago! That's the trick for getting this drive to burn all media correctly without errors. I can't believe that Sony support won't admit anything and even suggests problems with our own systems. I got this crap from DIRECT TV when they first came out and had bad DSS receivers. Well, as I always have believed as do most people on this site " Must be very persistent to get things done unfortuneatly " Comments posted by Bill from Other, November 05, 2002. I said I would write back when I did more tests... Well, I'm back! Before I only had problems burning DVD+R's, the rest of the discs burned fine with Nero 5.5.9.14. I downloaded the update to Nero, and the 5.5.9.17 version works like a charm!! I have now successfully burnt 5 Verbatim DVD+R 2.5x without a coaster yet. As I thought, this was completely a software compatibility problem that would be resolved very soon. I have no doubt that this is the best DVD writer out there, since it lets you write ALL formats and very fast. If you are still uncertain about buying a DVD writer, maybe you should wait until the NEC ND-1100. It promises to deliver the same features that this Sony and faster burning speeds (4x) for DVD+R's. Although they wont come out with the DVD+R's 4x until the middle of next year. So, those are the results of my final testings. I can burn ALL formats now and they are ALL handled very well by the Sony DRU500A. They ALL play in my desktop and laptop (PowerDVD and WinDVD), and in my living room DVD player (Pioneer DV-626D). Happy burning! Comments posted by Ponsui from Other, November 04, 2002. Rated this writer 10 of 10. |

So far so good, I burned home videos to Ricoh DVD+R and Sony+RW. Both played flawlessly in my standalone Pioneer DVD player, PS2, and Pioneer DVD-ROM. I used the bundled software, I don't dare fiddle with Nero or other software at this time. Give it some time for them to catch up. Next work is to burn PS2 games. Anybody had luck on this? True, I was concerned about the lack of software and limited media support but the little silver bezel tray really swung it for me. Who needs DVD when there's arty hardware like this to gaze upon? Comments posted by DaveToft from Other, November 04, 2002. Rated this writer 10 of 10. |

So far I love the drive! The fact that I got it at Dell for below cost is just an added bonus. It works nicely with Veritas RecordNow and is supported by Easy CD Creator Platinum 5.3.2.34 and Nero 5.5.9.17 (prefer Stomp or Veritas for DVD video, since Nero seems to have some compatiblity issues with DVD video [not just with the DRU-500A but all drives] according to people who have used it). I also like the unique silver tray bezel. I can't wait to get my hands on 4X DVD-R media. I just ordered some 2X DVD-R media (at a stiff premium over 1X media; but I didn't buy it to burn at 1X! Cold have done that with my old burner) I am not wasting extra money on DVD+R media, especially since my DVD players all work with -R media... Check the forums here for a list of media that works with the drive... This is just as fast at writing to DVD-R (4X) as the upcoming Pioneer A05, but also has compatibility with DVD+R/+RW, just in case... Also burns CD-Rs faster (24X) than the A05, but not worth wasting this burner on CD-Rs, with the low price of dedicated CD-RW drives these days. There is a new NEC (ND-1100) drive coming out that tops even this Sony, in that it burns DVD-R media at the same speed (4X), but burns DVD+R at 4X (the Sony 'only' burns DVD+R at 2.4X). The NEC and Sony are both currently * less media friendly (due to their 'dual DVD' burning capability) than other DVD-R/+R drives, so check compatibility before buying media in bulk... * Hopefully (a) future firmware upgrade(s) will alleviate this problem. (Firmware, Software, etc.) It is not a matter of paying for what you get, but a matter of expecting a manufacturer to offer a broad range of support, especially in a drive that was designed to "run on all the DVD standards". I think it is clear that Sony intentionally did not want "certain" media to work in this drive, as these discs are being blocked at a firmware, hardware hard-coded, level. I burn appx 40-50 DVD-R's a week, that is why I hope this drive eventually supports the $1 media. Let's face it, the world runs on this $1 media! If you only burn a DVD-R once in a while, who cares, you can pay $5 a disc... When my Ritek's and Princo's come in, I will let everyone know! Comments posted by Norm from Other, November 03, 2002. I purchased my dru500a a week ago and have found that when using mydvd, works intermittently with maxell dvd+/-R errors received, errors with fuji +r and hp+r. works with sony +rw and my standalone pioneer dv-c503. verbatim +rw records o.k. but wont play in dv-c503. Have backed up a couple PS2 games on sony +r using Nero 5.5.9.14 o.k. Have been in contact w/sony but they know nothing at support. Have contacted sonic support & they know there is a BIG PROBLEM and ask us to wait for upgrade from ver.4.01 build-61168 to correct driver problems causing these sense-code errors. I bought the sony DRU500A about 2 weeks ago , and so far I think its a good unit. I will agree with some of the comments about being released to soon without good software support, but guess what folks, thats the way it is with most computer hardware.Anyway I think most of the problems everybody is having is software related. After an expensive learning curve, this is what I have found so far. The drive works fine with verbatium, fujifilm, and maxell DVD-R media and of course sony media. One user comment talked about only using $1 media, and hasn't got any to work.Well you get what you pay for dude. Software Issues ? Well the unit works great using the "Record Now" software that comes with it. I have burnt several DVD's using it and they play back on my JVC (XV-S502SL)home player and 2 year old Toshiba ( SD-4205 )5 disk DVD changer, and even play back on my old celeron 433 mhz laptop Dvd-rom. So far using Nero 5.5.9.14 they all burn fine but will not play back on my older DVD PLAYERS. I will have to try the new release 5.5.9.17 to see if that works better. This unit did not come with DLA software ,but has a promise of a free upgrade/download.Well that was disapointing but Roxio's newest version works just fine. Also I made restore disks ( with DVD-R )using norton Ghost 2003, and they work good too. I am running Windows XP Pro SP1, and have several other CD programs loaded ( Diskjuggler,Cdrwin,NTI,Roxio,Nero, etc ) and having no conflicts. Altough they all don't work with this unit yet, but I'm sure all the software companies will release updates soon. There is one other problem, can't get a second DVD-Rom player to work correctly with this unit. Tried putting DVD-Rom on a separate bus, but the Sony doesn't like a second Dvd-Rom installed on my system, or maybe Windows XP doesn't like it. But I do have a HP CD-RW installed also and they work fine together. Overall I'm happy with the the Sony DRU500A and will stick with this drive.I own a computer business, so I have a little patience when it comes to computer's. So my suggestion is, if you want something to work great with everything and aren't computer savvy, buy an older model drive thats been on the market for awhile. If you want the newest technology buy this drive. Its a good drive, you't just have to wait for some software updates. Comments posted by Steve from Other, November 03, 2002. Just picked up this drive. Happy with it cosmetically, but still slightly concerned about it's compatability. Here is what I have so far: <<<System:>>> P4 2GHZ, 512MB RDRAM, ATA133 HDD, WINXP PRO <<<Software:>>> Nero 55917 DiscJuggler 4011038 <<<Media:>>> Generic White Label DVD-R 1 - (Recognizes 1/20 discs and fails during write) Generic White Label DVD-R 2 - (Recognizes discs, but fails during write) (2X) Sony DVD+RW - (OK) (1X) CompUSA DVD-R - (OK) (1X) Imation DVD-R - (Recognizes disc, but fails during write) (2X) Sorry, I don't the know the exact brands of the "White Label" discs above. The ADVDInfo Tool is not working, regardless of ASPI Version, on my WinXP system... (If you have an idea, let me know, I would like to get this tool working!) I ordered them in bulk, you know, the "house" brand. They worked fine in my Pioneer A04. (I currently have 200 of these discs! Ouch!) I just ordered a 10 pack of the Ritek DVD-R's. One user reported problems with it, but another seemed confident in saying he had no problems with the Ritek. (*Rolling* the dice.) If these don't work I will try the Princo's. I will not pay $5-$10 a piece for the Sony/TDK/Kodak DVD-R discs :(. If I cannot get the $1 discs to work, I will revert to my Pioneer A04. Summary: This seems to be the drive of tomorrow, not the current solution. When the high quality, fast, media is a little more affordable, this will be the drive to own! Currently I am mulling over returning it, especially if I can't get some cheaper media to work... Nero, if you are listening, if any of this is S/W related, please fix! I received my drive 2 weeks ago from Dell I haven't had any problems. I burnt a HP+ RW and Apples -R media just fine. Maybe some other programs will have to catch up to be compatible with the drive but from what I have seen they are working fast on it. Comments posted by hard worker from Other, November 02, 2002. Received this drive 2 days ago and i must say i love it. I burned some xbox games and a movie to the DVD+RW that was included and i was no problem for my xbox, nor for my dvd player to read it. Bought this Sony DRU500A about 5 days ago and have been testing it since then. I really like it and the problems I have encountered seem more like software/compatibility problems than drive problems. Here's a small summary of my findings: No problems with: - Verbatim DVD-R 2x. 10+ burnt, no coasters (This surprised me since even Verbatim says they will not work). - Verbatim DVD-R 1x. 3 burnt, no coasters - Memorex DVD-R 1x. 6 burnt, no coasters - Ritek DVD-R 2x. 3 burnt, no coaters (yes everyone, go out and buy $1 Ritek media. It works with the sony!!) - Sony DVD-R 2x. Just 1 burnt, no coasters. - Sony DVD-RW 2x. Just 1 burnt, no coasters. - Sony DVD+RW. Just 1 burnt, no coasters. - Fuji DVD+RW. 2 burnt, no coasters. Problems with: - HP DVD+R 2.5x. 1 coaster. - Memorex DVD+R 2.5x. 3 coasters Basically, I am having problems with DVD+R's. I am burning with Nero 5.5.9.14, and apparently the combination Nero+Sony has problems recognizing DVD+R's, since it can't close them with disc at onece (as many people have stated). This seems to be a fairly correctable problem of compatibility and hopefully it will be corrected tomorrow when the new Nero upgrade comes out. I am very happy with the drive. It records fast, can overburn, buffer protection is the best I've seen out there, and Power Burn really works! I hope this helps if you are trying to make a decision. I'll let you know when I do more tests. Comments posted by Ponsui from Other, October 31, 2002. Rated this writer 10 of 10. |

Keep your sanity - buy something else!!! The drive is definately not ready for prime time. I made a bunch of coasters using Maxell and Memorex media (my experience). Only claimed to work with TDK, SONY, and Kodak disks (sony statement after I blew $50 of other disks and called their support line). Maybe someday they will have firmware fixes, but why bother. Buy something else and enjoy reliablity today! Comments posted by DVDepressed from Other, October 31, 2002. Rated this writer 1 of 10. |

I really agree with comment shown below.... there is not full support of any burning software like Nero and anyway any support of dvd media like ritek, generic....because mostly these everyone wants to use..right? If you want to use $1 media you will need to wait for new firware from sony...and wait for burning software support...then you can say that the drive is BAD. I'm buying this drive this weekend and the negative post in are not swaying me away from doing so. All the problems I reading in here about coasters, sounds like the same problem we've all had with our new fast CD-R burners. Get a lot of coasters when burning at high speeds, but then the software and firmware updates come and out band those problems are gone. This sounds completely like a software issue on the burning software you're using and not a hardware drive issue. Like someone else posted in here...once the software catches up with the hardware technology...this is going to be one great DVD burner. Comments posted by DarkCyber from Other, October 30, 2002. Bought one DRU-500A here in The netherlands. Also bought different kind of DVD-R's Princo, ok, only at 1 speed Nashua, ok, only at 1 speed Verbatim, ##, started at 2 speed wrote half a disk and error, 1x same. That's Write, ok, only at 1 speed Arita, ok, only at 1 speed Platinum, ok, only at 1 speed. From the That's Write there are 2 types on the market. The brown colored are overprinted low cost Viastar. The purple is the original. The problem appears wehen you playback the video/data. Tested under 98SE/2000/XP. Sofware tested Roxio/Nero(5.5.9.14)/VOB/Padus Discjuggler. Only Padus Discjuggler/Nero worked fine with the Sony under Win98SE Nero is every time dropping the speed down to 1 speed after inserting an empty DVD-R (even 2 speed). Roxio only xp/2000 Nero 98/xp/2000 Vob Install this if you want problems. WARNING Easy CD-Creator is causing troubles when you have NERO/ROXIO/VOB/PADUS/CLONE/CLONY/CDRWIN. Make sure that you deleted all dll's and .inf's to be sure there will be no conflict. Writer is very stable, can even use Photoshop and writ in the backgroud. As soon as I heard about a "Sony dvd drive that supports both formats" I knew this was the drive for me. I couldn't decide which format to use, so what could be better? Well, I went shopping around at Circuit City, then went to CompUSA and had found the drive of my dreams!! The Sony DRU500A!!(actually mine says DRU500 on bootup, is there a difference??) Well, I brought it home and so far I have only burned 3 dvd's full of my music videos in data disc format. All those burned fine(used Sony DVD+RW). I tried to burn some mp3's(to music cd) using Nero .9.13, but like the other people that have tried, the drive won't burn GQ CD-R's from Fry's. So I had to use my TDK writer for that. But I also did try Maxell 700mb CD-R's and those work(mp3 to music cd). I bought some GQ DVD-R, but have yet to attempt to burn those on the drive. Overall, I am(so far) satisfied with my purchase, but I really have yet to test this further since I want to burn all my home dv's onto dvd. So I will post later how that went. P.S. Does anybody out there know if there is a difference between "DRU500A" and "DRU500"?? Please let me know. TIA Comments posted by Gargantuan from Other, October 29, 2002. Rated this writer 8 of 10. |

I purchased this drive about two weeks ago and was hesitant to add a post, because i wanted to make sure that my probloem were valid...I really like the consept of the drive(-+R/W), but it seems to have a few bugs...It seems that everyone has had great sucess with the Sony DVD+R/W that came with the drive, and i did too....But i also bought Fujifilm DVD+R's and GQ(5pk for $10 @ Fry's) DVD-R's...My 1st and 2nd attempt i burned two coasters with the Fujifilm media, but on my third try i was successful with the Fujifilm...i attempted to burn another movie with the Fujifilm media and it was a coaster, so you guys go figure!...with the coasters(oh, by the way i burned all with Nero 9.9.1.4) Nero could not perform the disc at once operation(that was the error Nero gave)...so i was 1 fo 4 with the Fujifilm...As far as thr GQ discs, that have all worked(all 5), so i bought more...Only problem is that the GQ's are 1X(very slow..a bit under an hour), but they seem reliable...so to sum this all up: with Nero; Fujifilm(+R): 1 success out of 4 tries GQ(-R): 5 successes out of 5 Sony(+R/W): Works every time with Record Now; Sony(+R/W): works everytime(just burned movie files as data) Hopefully their will be some type of firmware fix or a new version of nero soon!
