Great drive, got it a few days ago. Only coaster I made was a tdk dvd+r disc. Made several movies, all of which play on my 5th Generation PS2. Sony brand dvd+rw and dvd-r all work great, just ordered 50 riteks, waiting for them to arrive, but from what I have read here they should work fine.

Just as a note, I could get to media to work in a friends older 1st generation PS2.

I recieved one of these a couple of weeks ago after a long backorder at Dell. I plugged in some DVD+RWs (TDK and Sony) and unloaded about 15GB of data from my Linux desktop. Then I took the media and plugged it into my laptop - read it no sweat.

I was most pleased by the writing speed - I have an old Pioneer DVD-RAM 1x drive that is SLOOOWWWW. This is MUCH better, and more portable.

It does what I want, no problemo so it gets a 10.

FYI:
Nero 5.5.9.17.1 (latest version) has a bug and will not burn DVD+R discs correctly with this drive. It will fail to close the disc.

If you want to burn using Nero you need to use the older 5.5.9.17.0 version.

Well to Add my comments on this drive, I love it.

I have burned some captures from an ATI AIW Radeo7500 and data files on Verbatim DVD-R p/n 94058 made in singapore on 28 feb 02, with no problems.

Then I tried Memorex DVD+R p/n 3202 5550 that were on sale 3 pack @ $9.99, Two coasters with Nero when it goes to close out the disk under DAO, same error as others have reported. If I had read that first I wouldn't have wasted 2 disks. Using the Sonic MyDVD that came with the drive it burned a capture perfectly that Nero 5.5.9.17 could not burn without erroring out. Nero did work with DVD-R disks. So I'm blaming the nero for not being able to burn the DVD+R format since other s/w burned them OK.

Overall I love this drive, Now if I could only backup my data files with Nero I'd be a happy camper.

So far I've only been testing the drive before relying heavily on it.

FWIW I did the firmware upgrade before use.

Hi all-

Last Thursday I purchased the drive as well as 4 various DVD-R media. 1 Imation, 5pk Memorex, 10 KHypermedia, and 1 TDK. I uninstalled EasyCD I just figured why even attempt it. Installed the software included RecordNOW. Even though this is a basic piece of software I wanted to run a test. After burning a few Memorex coasters I did succeed with a complete burn with the TDK media. After a few coasters I flashed the firmware. I installed the latest version of Nero and made a complete burn of a Memorex piece. The KHypermedia has failed numerous times. The Imation was a flop to.

Yesterday I purchased some Maxell DVD-R media just for my own tests. Learning by trial and error with this is expensive but, hey those are the breaks. I uninstalled Nero cause it just was getting frustrateing. So I updated RecordNOW to RecordNOW Max 4.5. Popped in a Maxell dumped 4.2 gigs on Maxell DVD-R media and worked fine. After that I went and burned a Memorex piece fine as well. Attempted the KHypermedia another time got to about 94% and recieved a write error from RecordNOW MAX but, i'm going to make another attempt.

Below are the results I've recieved from various forms of media as well as software packages.

RecordNOW

TDK burned OK
Memorex burned FAILED

Nero latest version
Memorex 2 burned FAILED
KHypermedia 2 burn FAILED

Results after Flashing the firmware and updateing to RecordNOW MAX 4.5

Memorex burned OK
Maxell 2 burned OK

All these results are only DVD-R media only and it's just Data burns.

Seems to me I've had better results with RecordNOW MAX 4.5 than any other burn software. Now are the failed burns based on Media? or Software? Possibly both for all I know but, i'll continue to burn tests and share my experiences with this drive. I'm giving this drive a 9 though. I just think finding the write software and media are truly what's making this drive a lil quirky is all. I haven't burned video juuuuuust yet but, will do that when I get a chance.

Thanks for reading I hope any information I described was any help to anyone. L8r

Robert

For all you movie people out there. I used ULEAD DVD Workshop and DVD-IT to burn DVD's every time no problem. I use TDK +/-R / RW, call Sony or look on the support web site for TYPES OF BLANK DVD's supported. This is the reason for most of your problems. IT IS THE WAY THE DISK IS MANUFACTURED - THE DYE IN IT IS NOT COMPATIBLE. I have run into the same situations with Imation brand, and Sony told me not to use it. Now it works with TDK, as they recommended. This is a GREAT drive, absolutely. On top of it with XP I just plugged in the power and data cable and no software install at all that came with the drive, and it worked like a charm.

Sony DRU500A works perfectly. Have burnt to cdr, cdrw, dvd-r, dvd-rw, dvd+r and dvd+rw all works fine with the software supplied. Have been able to copy music, playstation games, data and dvd,s. With the current "War of the formats" having the Sony DRU500A eliminates the stress of having to choose between DVD Writers and formats.

I've read many people complaining about Nero and here is my own problem:)

Burned a DVD using Nero 5.5.9.17 on a Memorex+RW media. Played fine on
my Sony S560 DVD player. I created the same DVD on a Memorex-R media and
tried it on the Pioneer 353 DVD player and the disk was not recognized. When I put it into the Sony player, it played fine. (I thought this Sony player only supported +R/+RW formats).

So, is it the Pioneer Player having problems with the Memorex-R media or Nero creating a Pioneer unfriendly DVD.

Other than that, the drives seems to work as advertised.

Well, add another one to the defective list. It worked great for
a couple of weeks. I didn't even upgrade the firmware due to some of the post here. All in all it was a very nice burner for the time it lasted. BUY THE PROTECTION PLAN. I cannot rate this one, i didn't have it long enough.

Drive worked great for nearly a month (no coasters). Burned all Disc formats. Did the flashrom update without a problem. Drive continued to work after the update too. Even better I think.
Then....one morning I go to burn a CDR with nero and started getting lots of errors. Buffer would start to fill to about 17% and drive light would flash along with the harddrives. Looks like its burning. Then it fails and get many errors reported by Nero. By the way I'm using the very latest Nero available. I used Sony 32x cdr media. Tried
everthing to get it to work. Tried the Veritas Burning software that came with the drive. It had the same problems. Failed to write. I didn't make any changes to my system the whole time I had the drive.

The only thing I can think of is that maybe just maybe the new Firmware could or might cause your drive to breakdown somehow after using it for awhile. It maybe adding additional stress to the drive to improve performance. Or could be simply the drive went bad. I have been able after rebooting many time and trying over and over again to burn in nero was finally able to fully burn acouple Cdrs. But after burning them they could not be read even by the sony drive. I looked at the cds themselves physically and noticed blank spots on the CDs. Like it burned then skiped over an area on the CD then burned more then skiped over another area. Many of these spots on the CD near the center of the disc. Very noticeable spots. Well I'm returning that drive shortly. I bought anotherone but will not do a firmware update on it in fear it will eventually damage the drive. All other people who did the firmware update goodluck.

Received this unit on Friday, have used with the following DVD-R:

Ritek
Supermedia
DVDPRO
Apple

7 DVD's burned with no coasters.
Reconized by Pinnacle Studio version 8.3 will only burn at 1x.

The unit installed easily in my Dell Dimension 8200 with no clearance problems.

This is a very good unit and will only get better as software / firmware is updated.

It's a beaut! I have succesfully burnt 4/5 PS2 DVD-R games, and the one time I created a coaster it was my shit pc's fault and not the drive. So discount that one. Using Ritek's, and if I see a cheaper media I'll use that. Love it. 255 from Dell. +tax, 271.

Bought this here in UK on 21st November for £260, from AUT http://www.autdirect.co.uk/ (hard to get!)... Installed onto W2K SP3 easily .. had to set region (can only be done 5 times). Using Datasafe 2x Media (generation 4) at about £1 each I have burned 5/5 DVD's sucessfully so far .. they play in my stand alone mustec. I even burned successfully whilst playing Quake 3 on line.. now I think thats impressive! I haven't bothered upgrading the firmware yet .. work up the courage for that once I'm used to using it and confident all's ok (had it one day!).
Nero 5.5.9.17 recognises it.. the included DVD authoring sofware 'myDVD' works great. Brilliant Recorder!

As a Brit some of the DVD blanks are not available easily for me. However, just installed it in my updated edit suite. Matrox RT 2000 edit suit running Adobe 6.2 on Win 2000 pro. Motherboard is an ASUS P4T 533-C with a P4 2.4Gig processor with 500Meg Pc800 RD RAM.

Mini DV footage was encoded using the Matrox MPEG 2 IBP encoder and the resulting files assembled using DVDit LE version 2.5. The burning programme is Nero 5.5.9.17 and the DVD writer is the SONY DRU 500A running on its original firmware not the 1.0d update.

I was given 3 Disks to test. A +and-R Inifiniti and a -R Diskplanet from www.medeainternational.com/

All disks burned and finalised without problem and all played in my Samsung DVD S-224 player. Programs were a 12 minute promo and a 45 minute documentary, made by me.

I also played all the disks in a JVC XV-522 without problem, but a Sanyo DVD 7201 would not play either of the -R disks. I suspect that this is a trait of the player not the disks.

I may have problems in the future but my first impression is relief that it worked OK. Up to now I like the drive. One reservation is the countdown on changing the region code, I have had one or two system fails in the past and if I have to reinstall everything I am concerned that I may use up these region changes in inocence, leaving me stuck.

I cannot get my DRU500A to recognize Memorex DVD-RW media. Just bought a 5-pack. I called Sony and they don't say that they don't support Memorex, only that they do support TDK, JVC, Mitsubishi. I would think that Memorex is a big enough name and popular enough to be supported.

Hey Sawaddi --

I had the same problem with DVD+R discs and Nero 5.5.9.17 (see my post below). There is also another post on this thread specifically mentioning this issue with Nero (failed end of disc-at-once) and +R media. I'm waiting to receive some -R media to confirm that this is a problem specifically with this media type. DVD+RW discs work just fine in Nero for me.

Otherwise, I'm happily burning. Using the included RecordNow with my +R media until Nero gets fixed.

Purchased a Sony DRU500A yesterday with 10 DVD+R Imation and 5 DVD+RW Memorex discs.

First tried with EZCD latest version but too many problems. Could not burn successfully. Uninstalled EZCD and installed latest version of Nero.

Nero recognized the drive and was able to write to the DVD+RW disc after one failed attempt. Still seemed flaky.

Next tried to copy files to an Imation DVD+R. Seemed to progress fine until the very end and failed with the following message:

10:28:04 AM #20 CDR -1066 File ThreadedTransferInterface.cpp, Line 1443
Invalid field in command
10:28:04 AM #21 TRANSFER -24 File ThreadedTransferInterface.cpp, Line 1443
Could not perform end of Disc-At-Once
10:28:04 AM #22 Phase 38 File dlgbrnst.cpp, Line 1574
Burn process failed at 2.4x (3,312 KB/s)

Same failure mode with four attempts.

Uninstalled Nero and installed the Sony supplied software. Was able to complete sucessfully with both DVD+R Imation and DVD+RW Memorex discs.

However, NEC 5800A DVD-ROM can not read either disc!

For those of you who just bought a sony DRU500a, do not use NERO (all versions) with DVD+R. There's an issue with nero's disc at once that occurs at the end of a burn. It will give you an invalid command and a chorus of boos. Recordnow and easycd with the latest update will suffice for now. Happy burning.

I have had the dru-500a for a few days now, and I have had some mixed results:

running:
- winXP sp 1
- Athlon 1.2Ghz
- 256 MB RAM

Here is what I've observed:

- I flashed the firmware immediately after installation. Procedure froze mid-way though, had to hard boot the machine, but I had forgotten to click "check drive". Upon reboot the drive reported the new firmware version (1.0d) and appeared to work.

- Successfully burned the included Sony +rw disc with Nero 5.5.9.17. I also successfully erased the data and re-burned several times

- Bought Phillips +r media and burned three out of three coasters with Nero. I assumed that it was the media so I bought Verbatim +r media after reading reports of success with the dru500a on the media thread:
http://www.vcdhelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=120888

I burned several coaster in a row with the Verbatims, after which I started to suspect a problem with the software. Incidentally, the Nero issue I was having consisted of a failure to close "disc-at-once" or some such nonsense. It happened right at the end of the burn. All I can say is that I am unable to close +r discs with (the latest) Nero, and it's pissing me off. Anyone know of a fix, or had the same problem?

After I switched to (ugh) the included Record Now software, things got better -- I successfully burned +r data discs every time -- both the Verbatims and the Phillips. However, the interface and features of Record Now are awful, so I am keen to find a way to make Nero work.

- Successfully burned onto Fuji +rw discs

All in all, when this recorder works, I think it works great. I blame the problems I have encountered more on the software, then on the drive itself. Sure, that decreases the overall experience (and increases the annoyance-factor), but I'm confident that the compatibility problems will get sorted out.

I bought my Sony DRU-500A a few weeks ago, and I'm really happy with it. Together with my drive I bought 10 DVD's of 5 different brands, 2 pcs. each. 3 DVD+R brands and 2 DVD-R brands.
The results were as follows:
That's Write - DVD-R - 1 OK, 1 coaster
Nashua - DVD-R - 2 coasters
Arita - DVD-R - 2 OK
Platinum - DVD+R - 2 OK
Verbatim - DVD+R - 2 OK
Sony - DVD+RW that came with the drive - OK
It seems that DVD+R worked better than DVD-R, but this can be coincidence, due to the different brands.
In the meantime I bought 40 pcs. Platinum DVD+R and 2 pcs Princo DVD-R. The Platinum +R all work fine, no coasters at all.
I tried the cheap Princo media just as a test, because many people are having problems when using these media.
With me it worked flawlessly at 2x, DVD also played perfect in my standalone player Pioneer DV-454.
Until now this is a very good score in working DVD's. I did not update the firmware of the burner yet. And maybe I never will. As long as other people are still having problems, and sometimes even severe problems, I won't update the firmware, as long as everything works fine with me. Why change something that is working, and risk real trouble.
Maybe I will update in december, when the next firmware will appear. This drive is really good, but it needs some more compatibility with different DVD-media.

After searching everywhere I finally found one unit at circuit city. I got home installed it and without testing upgraded the firmware to 1.0d. I have burnt 2 dvd-+r each and the dvd+rw that came with the drive. The drive is perfect so far. I also tested the cd-r/rw protion with Nero and it was perfect no problems. I have since then pulled out my old cd-r/rw to keep heat down inside the unit. I love using winrar to backup my drive to a file and then burn it. Hame movies should be a snap now and take up less room conse=idering I can get most of those cd-r's on one or two DVD's Excellent burner even tho it's my first. Good hunting on finding one and if you do DO NOT hesatate get it because it wll sell out from under you very quickly. Good job Sony. I would also like to add that this is my seventh Sony product and once again it lives up to it's hype, some people just have really bad luck I guess.

I have owned this writer for almost one month.
This drive has the best features, speed and compatability.
I burnt 8 DVDs with Ritek Prime disk ($1 each). No coaster and played great on my Daewoo 5700 and Koss DVP2161. DVD-+RW burning also didn't show any problem. I'm using DVD-R for DVD video burning since it's cheap and DVD+RW for data and DVD-play-test since it's fast. Once you find right brand media, you never have single problem.

I have not the hand at the moment on a DRU500A drive (I want to buy one) and on a site I read the following information about a new firmware for the drive which still has to release, with the following information about the firmware

******************************************************************

This new firmware will allow your Dual RW drive to record at 4X on 4X compatible DVD+R media as well as improve the DVD-ROM reading performance with DVD recordable/rewritable media.

We expect this firmware to be released on or before December 9th, 2002. Please check back on this site then to download and install the firmware. We anticipate that 4X compatible DVD+R media will be commercially available later in December.

******************************************************************

That is very interesting ofcourse and hopefully more media you can write with it. So, I don't have a rating yet because I don't have the drive at the moment
