| Fully functional and robust. Every time I burn another DVD-R and find that it works in player after player, I ask myself, "Why would anyone buy DVD-RAM or +RW when these are so much better??" | Had mine (104) about a week and really like it. Better quality videos than VCD. The only downer as far as I'm concerned, is the writing speed. 1Xs on the cheaper blanks (now down to under 60p), cause I'm too tight to pay £3.75 for the 2Xs blanks. | Just got my pioneer 104 last weekend and love it alresdy. I ordered it with 2 generic dvd-rw's and it came with Cyberlink Power director which only lets you view it in 1024x768 which I hated so I got Ulead Moviemaker. I had a little hitch at first as my Apex ad600 did'nt like the dvd-rw and could'nt test my movies (I was bummed). I got some Prodvd 2x dvd-r's and they worked great burnt at 2x and worked in my Apex. | I got Pioneer DVR 104 a month ago and no problem backing up data and authoring DVD. I recently put my DVD writer to USB 2.0 enclosure and uses for plug and play writer as well as portable DVD player on my other PC with Power DVD XP software and I am really happy about that. | I've had this unit for about 2 months paid $360 retail for it. Had some problems with the software programs (MySonic DVD)that came with. Once I got the right buring program (like Ulead or Nero)it worked like a champ. I've used generic DVDRs and DVDRWs, have had no problems, plays on both my Hitachi and Apex. | Got the dvr-104 about a month ago and I've used it to backup several hundred gigs of data. No problems whatsoever. Haven't tried any video stuff with it yet. One thing to note is the untold story of dvd media, from my experience unless the dvd-r/rw is specifically labeled 2X, it only burns at 1X, but I imagine this applies to dvd+r/rw also. FYI at the time of this writing, cdrwin 3.8G and fireburner 2.1.7 don't support this drive even as a cd-r/rw, burning cdr images/isos/etc has to be done with nero or primodvd. Despite the above inconviences, the drive has been an excellent bargain at $330 and the media cost of $1.39/disc (4.37gb@1X) is actually a little lower than that of the 700mb cd-r media I use. | Got the drive last week and made a DVD which worked great on my Sony DVP-S7700. Highly recommend this drive. Works well with the low cost ESbuy.com silver disks. | Installation was easy, performance is great. I capture analogue sources at 720x576 (PicVideo MPJPEG), convert to MPEG2 with CinemaCraft at 4.5Mbs and and burn to DVD with Sonic MyDVD. | Initially I bought into the DVD+RW hype but nothing I burned could be read by DVD-ROM drives or set top DVD players. I finally broke down and bought the DVR-A04 and haven't looked back since. Every movie whether DVD-R or DVD-RW could be read by all of my DVD devices. I could even read the previously unreadable DVD+RW discs I burned with my first drive. I highly recommend this drive. | I purchased the Pioneer A04 4 weeks ago and have nothing but praise for this writer. I have successfully written to DVD-R and DVD-RW from my digital camera and played the created DVD's back through my TV attached Sharp and Technics players without any problems. | Went for the A04. Brilliant bit of kit, discs are cheap now and have worked in all the players I needed them to. Been burning lots of old videos to DVD and newer DV camcorder movies, and no problems at all. It looks like it will be a solid dependable workhorse this one. The only negative, x1 on cheaper DVD-R and DVD-RW, but remember the old story about the tortoise and the hare? Considering I can be waiting many hours to encode then 30 minutes or 1 hour what is the difference, the most important thing is it works. | Bought the 104 OEM version of A04 and works like a charm. Since then I bought the firewire external enclosure for the drive and works too. Love it. Burn the DVD-R and DVD-RW without problems. | This machine works like a dream! I put it in a Firewire external box (IDE to 1394) and plugged it into my Firewire card. I use it with Nero 5582 and Windows XP with excellent results. I've only used Princo media (really cheap), but I'm able to back-up my DVDs onto DVD-RW and test them out on my set-top DVD player (with the appropriate shareware). If they play OK, I can make a permanent DVD-R copy. The ability to test on DVD-RW saves lots of money. I chose this over the competitive Panasonic model (LFD-311) for this reason... its DVD-RAM discs can't be played on a set-top DVD player. Comments posted by John Hawthorne from Other, May 12, 2002. | Got DVR-104 after weighting software and free DVD-R bundle for same price @esbuy.com I used ADS's USB 2.0 external converter and works really fine with quiet, smooth, blazing speed. So far no problem authoring DVD movies except direct copying using Parassi. Highly recommened for everyone. DVD-R disc are really cheaper now. Go to pricewatch.com average DVD-R is around $1. | Went for the 104 as opposed to the A04 (Same machine just OEM!) Previuosly owned the A03... all in all much of a likeness. Very easy to install, easy to use & Cheap Media.... what more could you ask for ?? (Well apart from even cheaper media!!! ) Sticking my neck out a bit here.... But I would think that the DVD R & DVD RW format is here to stay. Yet again.... well done Pioneer!
