Great drive! No DVD coasters at all! Only some CD coasters because of new Slysoft CloneCD conflict. Very silent. Upgraded to 1.03.

i want to make a correction, after using my newly aquired copy of dvd x copy platinum i made perfect 1:1 copies of how high, bones, t3, latin kings of comedy, x men 2 and bruce almighty with all menus and special features intact on ONE dvd, and id also like to comment that i have had no speed problems whatsoever, im using the default settings, i have NOT updated firmware and have not messed with dma and such settings, currently using 4x Ultra brand dvd+r's with a 12 minute burn time this burner now gets a 15 out of 10 YAY!

SLOW BURNS SOLVED! (ENABLE DMA MODE) ((DUH.))

After reading all of the fantastic reviews, and also having used very good Plextor products in the past, I bought this writer a few days ago, along with some Memorex 4x DVD+R media. Using Nero 6 Ultra, I started burning some DVD's.

Nero recognized the 8x speed capability on the 4x media, and when I burned, Nero SAID that it was burning at 8x. However, it took almost an hour to burn a full DVD! The DVD's came out fine, but just took forever to burn.

I called Plextor tech support first, and as soon as the word Memorex came out of my mouth, the girl told me "Oh you can never trust Memorex media. They have so many different manufacturers, their media just isn't consistant. The media is definately your problem. Buy some Verbatim DataLife media." I tried to explain to her that I wasn't having any FAILED burned, just SLOW burns. But she swore up and down that it was the media. I was all set to get new media on the way home from work.

Then I checked the forums here at dvdrhelp.com. I found someone who had the same exact problem. The DMA solution (below) was offered, and he reported that it worked.

Here it is: (This is for Windows 2000, other OS's are probably simiar)
1. Know which device (master=0/slave=1) on which IDE channel your device is connected.
2. Right-click on My Computer and go to Properties.
3. Go to the Hardware tab and select Device Manager.
4. Expand IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers and double-click on the channel where your drive is connected.
5. Go to the Advanced Settings tab.
6. Under Transfer Mode for your device, make sure "DMA if available" is selected.

Mine was set to "PIO only" to begin with. I changed it, rebooted, and presto, I was burning full DVD's in 8 minutes.

I know that this is a "Duh" solution for the hardware guys, but I hope this saves someone a headache.

I'm giving the writer a 10 (Boom, baby! 8 Minutes!), but I'd give the tech support a 1 if I could. My symptoms should have pointed to this. Now to try the fast rips with the eject button trick!

I got this dvd burner last week for $230, and it does fine when i back up my data, it even did fine when i converted matrix revolutions to dvd, but when i try to make a copy of dvds i already have it completley fails, it makes garbled cds that IT cant even read once finished burning, so far i ahve tried making a copy of how high with dvd x copy gold (unsuccessful) and dvd decrypter (also unsuccessful) and bones which also failed, none of my dvd players (magnavox mrd200, GE Digital GE1101, and a crappy sanyo that wont play SVCD) will read the cds, if anyone wants to toss some advice my way, djbenitojuarez@hotmail.com, other than the fact it wont make backups of my dvds (which is why i bought the thing in the first place) its a pretty decent burner.

Message to Freako and whoever else is having trouble.
I use Nero 6.0.0.0 Ultra edition.
so i assume any version over 6.0 will burn at 8x, my friend had the same problem and with the same drive, not exceeding 4x, but after updated nero. It worked perfectly. i also use Stomp Record now Max 4.5 and in both programs, i burn at 8x every time.
However i have some New information to share with you. MATRIX Brand DVD-R (4x) dont seem to work with this drive AT ALL? DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT PURCHASE MATRIX DVD-R (4X) if you own the PLEXTOR PX-708A. Thats all the info i have enjoy this drive.
hope this info helps.

I bought Plextor PX-708A in September (in Europe) and I'm very satisfied with the drive itself.
But I have strugled with (Europe version) included Pinnacle Studio 8 SE because it seems to be uncapable to produce over 60 min DVDs.
I have recorded mpeg2s with my tv-card from tv-channels and from my analog video at DVD (Europe PAL) resolution 720x576 and 4000 Kbits/s bitrate and dvd stereo audio BUT Pinnacle Studio 8 SE just cannod make DVD disc (not direct to drive nor to hard disc).
And the problem is in Pinnacle Studio because I downloaded trial version of CyberLink PowerProducer2 and it made the DVD with no difficulty for the very same mpeg2-files.
I know that real DVD-video bitrate is 8000 Kbits/s but to fit 120 mins video into CD-R/+R needs to lover the bitrate, as DVD-recorders do. I just wonder why Pinnacle Studio 8 can't do things?

I love the drive except I ordered the Matrix 4x DVD +R media per Arty's recommendation and cannot get it to write at 8X using Nero 5.5 except with included disc from Plextor. What program did you use to burn Arty? Anyone else see anything similar?

Awesome DVD writer with all media tested except for MATRIX 4x DVD+R. I was hoping to find a deal on DVD+r but no luck with these... only burns at 4x using Nero.

Just got the drive a week ago. Great drive and very fast. I've burned 5 DVD +rw/-rw's and 4 CDs without one coaster. Rated 9 because of price but I guess when you're the only game in town (8x +r write) you can be a little pricey and prefer Nero over Roxio...

Great burns at 8 speed on DVD+ even on a 4x disc

Unpacked, connected ide & power cables, booted up, and it was that easy. No install problems of any kind. Software collection is well rounded and looks sufficient. I already had, and instead am using Nero Ultra Burning Rom 6.0.0.19, my Ricoh 4x certified dvd+r media burns around 8x~ or a little less, 8-9 mins total burn time for full 4.7gb, and so far no coasters. 2mb buffer seems more than sufficient for those worried about it not being 8mb, my buffer has never dropped below 81% while writing. Media playback is perfect on my Cyberhome and Jvc standalone players. Plextor has been supporting the drive well, with new firmware updates monthly or so. Also this drive is totally silent (I hear no audible noise during reading or writing) for those worried about any noise in a quiet system setup. Overall I rate this drive a perfect 10, as I have yet to see any downsides. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to buy the best burner on the market.

simply an amazing DVD burner
just wanted to contribute some info. This burner can burn @ 8x with 4x MEMOREX BRAND DVD MEDIA ($2-5 Each) as well as the much cheaper Brand 4x MATRIX BRAND DVD MEDIA. ($.89-$1.09 each)
I figure id share this information because a lot of people arent aware of how sick this burner is. it writes under 8 minuts all the time.
You can also purchase the DVD's from https://www.shop4tech.com/go/search
when in this screen, go to CATEGORY and select +DVD+R 4X 4.7GB
and u fall upon the cheapest prices for DVD Media that i have ever seen.
ohh and word to the wise, dont get MEMOREX just because its a brand name and because ull think it will last long or not F*ck up when u burn because it will. GO WITH MATRIX, only 4 Discs failed out of 80 successful burns. with memorex it was more like 33 percent failure rate.

i hope this info was helpful.

cheers

arty

I just got this drive and love it. I got it to replace a iomagic/dd203 4x dvd+-rw. This thing is MUCH better. Don't need all the firmware patches to get it working, it just plain works right out of the box.

Don't use the sucky software that comes with it. Spring for nero6, you will be glad you did (showtime and recode both work well with this drive).

Gerk, you should have rated it a 10/10 if all you were waiting for is 8x media to burn at 8x - cuz YOU DONT NEED IT. This drive can burn decent quality 4x+R media at 8x automatically. I am using 4x memorex dvd+r's at 8x with no problems.

I would rate the drive even better if they could figure out how to burn all the media types at twice their rated speed capacity.

Its one of the most expensive dvd drives out there, but I think well worth the money considering that you can burn a dvd in 8 minutes.

Excellent drive! Just a few minor complaints.
1. Packaging… The foam ends that protect the drive from damage and bouncing around were about an inch short and didn’t fit snuggly in the box. Not a problem cause the drive worked perfectly, it just allowed the unit to move a little bit in the box.
2. Software… Actually it should be software? What software? I mean please, at least have the decency to include a full version of Roxio 6 not “do you need to upgrade?” version. Don’t get me wrong Roxio DVD builder is nice but something a little bit more robust would have been nice… especially since the drive is as good as it gets… Dantz Retrospect? “Email us and we will send it to you!” Um no.
3. Ripping speeds… ok everyone wants to complain about this… read the manual its in there… trust me…

Otherwise this drive rocks! 9/10

They don't call it the "Sexy-Plexy" for nothin'. So far so good. Highly recommend this one. Not a perfect score as am waiting for the 8X media to hit the market and see how that is. As well, NOTHING deserves a perfect score right now. A bit pricier than the rest, but IMO a good buy nonetheless.

Exellent writer. Burned TDK +4X and Memorex +4X at 8 spread around 8 min. Very fast and reliable. Highly recomend.

Been using Plextor px-708a for a week now.
Flawless drive , burning bulkpaq 4x @ 8x no problems.
using ' anydvd + Clonedvd 'for excellent dvd movie back-ups .
Discs work in all the dvd players and psx 2's i have tried without a hitch .
Well impressed with multi-format +-rw and cdr recording .
Also writes in raw - mode for game copies .
Go try it yourself , you won't be disappointed .

Very good burner, no problems with firmware 1.02.
I think that Bill's problem is not the quality of the writer but the way it writes the media. By default HP (and Nec?) unit writes a different bitsetting (DVD-ROM for DVD+R) than Plextor unit (DVD+R for DVD+R.
See the link http://www.dvdplusrw.org/resources/bitsettings.html#pc
With Plextor you can not change the book type of DVD+R/RW

I am looking for a burner with maximum compatability with DVD players. I want to be able to send home video to relatives and not to have to worry about what DVD player that they have. If you are looking for the same thing, this is NOT the burner to buy.

I have two other DVD burners. An HP 200i (2.4X) and NEC ND-1100A (firmware 1.A1) (4X). Both of these produce video DVDs that play in my TV type DVD players. The Plextor PX-708A doesn't. The video doesn't play in my older Toshiba DVD player but does play in my newer Toshiba DVD player.

When I contacted Plextor support they tried to blame the media. I'm sorry, but when the same media burned at the same speed with two other burners produce a useable video DVD and the Plextor doesn't, it's the burner not the media. So, I'm not impressed with Plextor support either. They seem to be more interested in blaming media rather than fixing their problem.

Someone wrote here that DVD-RAM was crossed out but supported. Anyone who could assure this?
