| I have had the Sony 500a, 500ax and the 510a and i gotta say that those drive were ok, but this drive is the best recording drive I ever owned...I have worked at BestBuy for 6 years now so I get to try all the product we get and I must say that is the best DVD Writer out as of now...The drive is very quite even at high speeds... I burned a 812mb svcd in 2:56 total time!!! This drive can ripp Copy protected dvds up to 10x vs the other drives I had can only do 2x...This drive is the best All In One Drive out there...The only thing I would change is a bigger buffer.. | I love the Plextor 708A someone asked me so I tested and it is true it can burn at 8X using 4X media friend uses some cheap brand from compusa which is 1x and he burns at 2x at first I thought maybe it's just saying 8x because I have it to burn at maximum but it only takes 8 minutes to burn on a 4x media at 8x speed(full dvd movie, which was 4.24 gig) Comments posted by HAMP from Other, October 05, 2003. | I've always liked Plextor drives. Had a 8432 cdrw and a 161040 cdrw. When I went to buy a dvd burner,Plextor didn't have a dual format drive out but Sony had the 500a so I bought that. Nice drive, advertised at 2.4x, then soon after, there was a firmware update to make it a 4x drive. I thought, what could be better than this. Then Plextor introduced their first dual format burner and at 8x!!! I said, time to go back to Plextor. | I found that trick of holding the eject button for 3s myself, as well. Thanks for the pointer. It's also possible to enable full rip speed through the Plextor application. It's called ReadSpeed. On a dual layer I now got up to 8x rip speed, have not yet tried single layer. There was no noticeable difference in noise, so that's just a stupid excuse instead of saying we were told to slow it down. A word of caution to the wise: ReadSpeed may also affect reading regular CD-Rom discs and cause them to explode if they're faulty. So be careful. However, pressing the eject button for 3 seconds (no disc inserted) will enable DVD ripping at higher speeds. | This drive rocks... Within the past 3 weeks, I've tried the Sony 510, the TDK IndiDVD and now the Plextor. Fast and furios, some great extras like VeriRec, etc. New Firmware is posted on Plextor's site. Software bundle is OK if you like Roxio, but between Nero, ImgBurn, DVD Shrink, DVDDecryptor, why do you need Roxio? Buy it! It's worth every penny. | I have had this burner for 1 week now, and the reason was the TDK 440 DVD Drive crashed, and burned. I could not find any support to assist in my problems from TDK. So I decided to try a new product. This the most quiet drive I have ever used. The tray is solid, and you can even rip 4x TDK rated media at 8xs. The unit also reads 2x media from 4-8 times. | Purchased from www.mwave.com on 9/8/03 for ~$250, best price I could find and mwave had always done well by me. I'm loving this drive! The PX-708A has read and burned everything I've thrown at it so far, and as another poster commented it *does* look snazzy in the case :) Go the cheap route if you want but you know Plextor can do no wrong in this industry, pay the extra bucks and get the good stuff. I'm giving this unit a 9 as I rarely if ever rate a product a perfect 10, its just unrealistic. Its darn close, but here are my consumer-demanding gripes: 1) The software bundle is... mediocre at best IMO. I dunno, for a Plextor drive giving me Easy DVD Creator is almost insulting, you know you're going to use better third-party apps than this. And the Dantz Retrospect backup software promised in the Quick Start Guide isn't on the install CD, there's just a label directing you to the Plextor website to download it. Not that I've ever touch this software, but you should know... 2) Um... the box it came in is too cluttered to be eye-catching. | Fantastic drive, arrived last Friday. Writes @ 8x to 4x media +r (tested Bulkpaq G04 which cost just under £1 a disc). No probs burning CDrs @ 40x. No probs reading discs (CDrs) burnt on previous drive. 2 year onsite warranty from the manufacturer. Not a cheap drive (retail pack was £225 delivered) but performs to manufacturers spec and looks great in the case as well :p Gotta be worth 8/10, loses marks on price.
