| I've had this drive for almost two months. It has replaced my old trusty Ricoh 12x10x32 CD-RW drive. One downside is that updating to the newest firmware is pretty much necessary (in my case, recording speed was improved from 2× to 4× on Princo DVD-Rs). I am using this drive in an external USB 2.0. enclosure. I connected it to secondary master while applying the firmware update, because I didn't want to take any chances. I've heard that people have also sucessfully updated this drive without removing it from an external enclosure, though. Bundled stuff: Maxell DVD-RAM disc, PowerDVD XP 4.0 and some recording software which I never bothered to check out. I record all my stuff with Nero and Alcohol 120%. The DVD-RAM disc has replaced my old backup CD-RWs and it can be formatted in the FAT32 file system, in addition to UDF. Drivers from a bundled CD need to be installed in order for the DVD-RAM to work. I've recorded video and data on Princo DVD-Rs, Traxdata DVD-Rs and Fuji DVD-Rs. With the A301 firmware, it was done at 4× speed, error free. The discs play back normally. I am satisfied with CD recording performance. I've encountered no errors when burning CD-R discs. I hadn't tested this drive's overburn capabilites yet and I doubt that I ever will, since I find myself burning less and less CDs while burning more and more DVDs :). An annoyance that I have spotted is that the drive will emit a moderate level of vibrations when reading CD-R discs. The degree of these vibrations varies when discs from different CD-R brands are used. Overall I am quite happy with the performance of the 4040B. It offers a lot of features for its price. | Have had the DVD-Writer for a couple of weeks now. I Have burned a few 4 speed DVD-R Princo and some Medion DVD+R disc's. As for the DVD disc's everything is ok, as well as for DVD-Ram. Burns the Princo's and Medion's at 4 x speed. But I can't make it burn CD's. Coasters a lot:-( Tried with different Burner programs: Nero 5.5, Nero 6.3, Alcohol 120%. No luck. I have searched Nero's database for solutions, but there they have all sort of suggestions, of which life would be to short, if all the issues should be tested. My system consists of: Windows 2000Pro ATHLON XP1800 768 Mb PC133 SDRAM Epox 8KTA3+ (Via KT133A chipset) 2xIBM ATA100 120Gb disc's 1 IBM ATA100 40Gb GFX Ati Radeon 8500 1 GSA-4040B Burner, Bios ver. 301 I LG GDR8162 DVD-ROM I bought the DVD-ROM drive, because I saw somewhere that the drive would read DVD-Ram. It CAN NOT READ DVD-RAM!! O.K.Drive though (good and cheap as most DVD-ROM Drives are these days) If there were a firmware update that would cure the CD writhng issue, I would rate this drive 10, but it would not be fair to rate the drive before everything has been tried to solve the problem. I have installed the GSA-4040B as master on sec. IDE Crtl. Have tried to have the drive installed as the only drive on both PRIMARY Master and SECONDARY Master'a which made no difference to the CD burn issue. | I've only had one problem. The burning program that I prefer, Stomp's Record Now Max, doesnt support this drive. | Hi, to all of you having erase problems with nero (esp. nick). I had the same problems and have a workaround. Use the the Nero CD-DVD Speed (shipped with nero 6) and erase the disks with the supplied function. Then you can use nero for the burning. Sometimes you need to use the "create data disk" function before erasing. Good Luck! Because I think it is a nero problem I would give this outstanding writer a pure 10. | I'm using lg 4040b for 1 week... Drive come with a301 so i doesnt have to apply new firmware... So far Traxdata ritex g3 - 7 ok 2x Gigamaster An32 - 1 ok 2x (but disc is labeled 4x)... Also used traxdata DVD-RW (made by ritek) at 2x... No erase/burn problem (i have writed to it 3 time so far...) Also using some low quality cd-r media... (some burning in 24 x... but some stayed on 16 x all time (nero 6.0 with show real speed registry...) same cd-s goes 24x on lg cd-rw... No bad dvd/cd yet...:) I gave it 7 because an32 & cd-r... | Hi Folks, When you have Upgraded the Firmware to 300 or 301 on a 2000 or XP system, and you ran into some strange behavior (I had erase / write problems with dvd +/- RW from different Manufacturers and some 4x Media written at 2x) I could solve it by flashing the new firmware with WinXX startet in a Failsave Mode (like VGA) Seems that the Flash software is a little bit picky with some sort of IDE Controllers on DMA Mode Comments posted by fuba from Other, December 14, 2003. | HI, I´m from Chile and i´ve been using this dvd 3 weeks,and also tried a Pioneer A106D. Firmware A301 installed today (looks like correct some compatibility problems with my older standalone). Sofware used, NERO 6 and CloneDVD 1.3.11.2. The dvd media used is CURSOR 4x (not many brands in my country to pick!), but its only burned at 2x, while Pioneer 106D burned at 4x. Im also burn a Verbatim dvd-rw 2x, to 2x speed. Sadly, the prices for good dvd media are still a little too high (3 dollars "only", a Verbatim 4x). About playback, on my standalone there is no problems, but there is some problems with other olders standalone. Pioneer burned dvds not present this compatibility problem with older satandalone. I´don t know, but pioneer seems to be more mmmmm.. reliable or with better compatibility with media and standalone ( even if media is not good) Even with the odds, as long as it works with my newer standalone, i like this writer. Maybe another firmware upgrade solve the 4x media burned at 2x "problem", with cheap media, 'cos i dont think that the prices for good media go down soon. It has worked with all DVD+R/RW discs I have tried (although I have yet to try DVD+R at 4x) and all have played perfectly in my standalone. I suggest the people having trouble with this burner check their system setup/software/media before making comments that are simply not true and could be misleading to others considering buying the LG GSA-4040B. Conclusion: Overall, it is a good dual format burner for the low price. However, there seems to be some compatability problems with media as you can see from the results above. | just a follow up to my privious comment lg no response at all to the fact it won't right disks at 4 speed vertically or that it see's some 4 speed media as 2 speed medeainternational superb responded with in 24 hours and pointed out a thing or 2, one being that the media they distribute is tested by themselves on a number of drives LG isn't one of them pioneer and a few others downloaded dvdinfopro used it and the problem is the lg can not read the available write descriptor properly and defaults to 2 speed with this media the pioneer say's it will work at 1,2 & 4 speed with the same media the lg does work fine with discrite 4 speed disks and it reads the available write descriptor properly 4 speed so it looks like a firmware problem of some kind the 4 speed vertically problem is something to do with the spindle and clamp assy as it vibrates the whole drive making it buzz only when the drive is vertical the one thing the lg drive is really good at is read speed leaves the pioneer for dead probably better than the five rating previously given in fairness 8 only because is ain't right p.s. i'm 2 thousand years old Comments posted by toe from Other, December 08, 2003. | Today I bought my new dvd burner, LG GSA 4040B. After I put it in the catrage and connected it to the power and data cable, my BIOS can detect it. Then I upgrade firmware to A301, sucessfully. And I turned DMA on in the second IDE channel which my DVD burner connected to. I had a good time untill I began to install nero. I first download the nero6 ultra edition from nero.com, and install it with the serial key. Then I can check the info of my DVD burner and blank DVD-R disks. The burner can read my old music and video CD, so the hardware should be ok. I bought some generic no name DVD-Rs (max 2x write for DVD-R) coz they are cheap. The burning setting is simple for me as I had used CD-R with nero 5.x burner software for two years. Then I start burning my first data DVD. Just right after I start to burn in 2x speed, it prompts: caching the file... then nero froze. There was no read from hardisk and no write to DVD burner, and I can not close the nero. My OS is win2k server+sp3. I can not even kill the nero process wiht the task manager. It's totally dead there. I had to reboot, try burning again, Nero got dead again. Then I uninstall the nero demo version, try download its full version, about 90M after I extracted it. I install it and start burning. It's still dead!!! Then I doubt it's nero 6.0.0.28 causing the problem. I uninstall it and install B's Recorder GOLD5 that came with LD burner. Now I can burn DVD-R in 2x, I burned a 4.3G DVD in about 35 mins, and burned a CD-R in 24x, both burned CD/DVD media can be played with 3rd party software. Now I can say the burner is ok, and burning process is so quiet while my old CD burner is louder. Although I dislike the B's Recorder GOLD5, but so far it's the only working one. I dunno if anyone met the same problem as me? I like nero, but dunno which version is stable. 6.0.0.28 is the lastest, but it's so painful to use it.
