| Just bought the LG GSA-4040B and have had good success. This drive is very quiet and reliable in making DVD backup copies, so far? Using DVD Decrypter 3.19 (Princo 4X speed purple dye and white top DVD-R) firmware 302 loaded on secondary alone as master, but I can't get this damn drive to write at 4X speed? 2X speed only. Anyone have a solution to this problem? C'mon I know you pros out there have the answer! Let's hear from you, I'm sure there are others who are having the same prob. Any help would be appreciated. | i use this a lot. The only problem i have had is burning at 4x. to be honest i think it is just cause i keep buying ghetto fabulous dvd-rs and that they arent really 4x disks. I think i upgraded to the A302 firmware but im not sure i gotta double check that. I have very successfully backed up movies and ps2 games. | I bought this drive because I have used a LG CD-RW drive for many months with excellent results. It replaced a Pioneer DVR-103. After updating the firmware (302), and purchasing a multi-pack of 4X DVD-R discs from allmediaoutlet.com I have to give this drive a solid 10. Only one coaster since I installed it. From the multi-pack of DVD-R media three of the five brands of media worked great at 4X, and the other two only burned at 2X. I would suggest this experiment to anyone who isn't sure with what media to settle with. I have two stand alone players, and my parents one, and I found one brand (Ritek no logo) to be the best for me. The Princo 4X worked great on my stand alone players, but not on my parents. Either way it's better than paying 1.25+ a disc from a local retailer. The Memorex 4X DVD-R's I got from Amazon on sale only burnt at 2X until the 302 firmware release (they now work at 4X). The only experience I have had with DVD-RW is some old Princo 1X that I had leftover, and they burn just fine. I have not experimented with DVD+R/RW or DVD-RAM discs. | Swore by this drive for months. Various media from different companies, 0 problems. Now suddenly the drive cannot read authored DVD+RW (other drives/standalones can). System is XP SP1, so going to install a clean Win2000 to see if it's an OS problem. Flashing to v302 has had no effect, nor flashing in Safe Mode, as mentioned in a previous post. Blank DVD+RWs burn correctly with various applications, but the drive cannot read what it just burnt. All other media works fine (including DVD-RW), this just came out of nowhere. Anyone else experience this, please post a solution/workaround. Still giving the drive a "9" rating because the problem may end up being OS-related. | I may have a defective drive but with firmware a300 the drive did nothing. After I upgraded to a301 it successfully burned 4 Legacy 2x DVD-RW (white label for general use) data discs but those discs hang my other PC when it tries to read them. The drive doesn't recognize the CompUSA 1x DVD-R (white label for general use) discs as media. It doesn't recognize Memorex 80 min. CD-R (black label) discs or RICOH 80 min. CD-R (gold label). | I bought this as my first ever LG device and DVD Burner, never had a problem, no coasters just great quality burns, upgraded to A301 firmware and my Shintaro discs now burn at 4x, but then i installed Roxio EZCD/DVD 6 as i wanted to try their cd packet software, BAD Mistake, for i have now got 6 DVD coasters for my next party!.The packet software works fine with my Cyberburn CD Writer, but freaks the hell out of my LG DVD Burner. Having uninstalled Roxio and Copy to DVD(my preferred DVD writing software), then reinstalled Copy to DVD, i am still getting errors in burns. So my point is you say?, The DVD writer is awesome but choose your software carefully or else you could end up with enough coasters for a cocktail party like myself! | After 3 years of flawless performance from my LG CDRW (which is still going strong), LG was the first brand I looked to when I wanted a DVD writer and so far the GSA-4040B has lived up to my expectations. I updated the firmware to A301 before using it, so can't comment on the performance with the A300 Firmware it shipped with. So far I have been using Princo 4x DVD-R discs for video use and have had no problems (I bought a bulk pack with the dvd writer), so far all have burnt happily at 4x with no coasters and all play flawlessly in my Yamaha DVD Player. | Seems to be a production problem with these drives. Bought three for my place of work (all manufactured in July 2003) and they work fine. Bought another three later (manufactured November 2003) and they either fail to recognise the cheaper DVD-R discs, or downrate them from the rated 4X speed to 2X. | Bought it 2 month ago, DVD-RAM works fine, Princo DVD-RW doesn't work at all - 4 coasters, Ritek x4 DVD+R was done for 25 min, now Pioneer which eats everything you feed it costs 20 Can$ more, you will save on media, but what I really like DVD-RAM diskette-like writing.
