| 106 oem arrived today £86 from Novatech.co.uk. Installed and recognised straight away, upgraded to nero 6 and burned 1st DVD with bulkpaq 4x (£15 for 25 again from novatech). I bought Ritek G04 disks, 50 pack..... and the A06 has produced 4 Coasters!!! and of the 20 some other DVD back ups I have burned, about 6 of those 20 freeze. | Just got this - 106d (which is just an oem A06). £84 from dabs.com. Only tried with TDK - R disks so far but no coasters, using dvd x copy express. Willsonn get cheapos to try but heard they are fine with this drive. Great backups,tho wont work on my standalone - ok on pc or PS2 - but thats just cos my standalone is old panasonic and i dont yet know what if anything it can support. About 45 mins incl read and write for a film (not tried the extras cos dont really need them. Buy it before they stopmaking them cos it works. Yes like cdrw they will get quicker but is 45 mins from start to finish a problem. It works with my Apex AD-2600 (39.99 after 10 dollars rebate and free s/h and no taxes at http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00008N6X4/qid=1070735935//ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i0_xgl23/102-5018776-5209727?v=glance&s=electronics&n=507846). I bought the Pioneer A06, at http://www.ecost.com/ecost/shop/detail.asp?DPNo=245905&adcampaign=email,ECOSTCNET for 122 dollars with free S/H ground shipping and no taxes. I did my research, and this was the best place to buy an A06 DVD burner for the lowest price in America (free shipping too :) ). The DVD Burner took about 10-20 minutes to install, and this was my first time installing a drive in my computer. I took out my cd burner (because i wanted to rip with my Liteon DVD ROM drive) and installed the DVD Burner on my 2nd IDE as a master and my Liteon DVD ROm drive as a slave (for performance and faster seek times etc). The instructions were thorough so I wouldn't screw up the thing. My DVD Burner came with 1.07, so I was already set! I didn't get the hacked firmware from http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1615 because I didn't want to NUKE my new drive and/or computer. It came with one Verbatim DVD-RW and one Verbatim DVD-R, and I burned X-Men, and The Matrix easily with my DVD X Copy Express. It took about 30 minutes to rip these two movies with my DVD ROM drive, respectively. Just one note, if you're going to rip a lot of movies, make sure to use your DVD ROM drive for this, so you don't wear out the laser on the DVD Burner. Use the DVD ROM drive to rip the movie, then burn with the Pioneer A06. Make sure to get the A06, and not the 106 version. The 106 version is a barebones drive which comes with NO CABLES SCREWS MANUAL OR SOFTWARE. The 106 (OEM) version also has no box with it, so it is more opt to being damaged while being shipped. I bought it for 122 US dollars and I thought that was a steal compared to what other people paid for (This page http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1615) I received the product in 3 days with no pains ordering through mastercard. All the media that I used (house brands, princos, and riteks) worked and I got no coasters. CD Burning is a plus. If you're considering buying the LG-4040B, DONT, the compatibility of the LG-4040B with media is horrendous and the drive doesn't even burn at the stated speeds. | Got this A06 from BestBuy for $170 - $20 rebate. Started tesitng +RW. Tried Memorex and Verbatim. Works great and can be read in built-in DVD-ROM. Switched to plain +R (Imation, now $5 for 5 at OfficeMax). Pioneer itself can read no problems but built-in Lite-ON DVD-ROM says no disk. It seems like there many firmware upgrades out there. Seems like 1.07 is the latest. I don't want to screw up the drive with complex installation from DOS commands. Currently looking for something like double-click and forget type of installation to solve +R issue so that Lite-ON DVD-ROM could read +Rs. Comments posted by Shurup from Other, November 25, 2003. | Well, this is my first DVD writer (106, OEM version, no drivers or anything), and what can I say? it works fantastic! Setup was prtety much instant, have not had a bad burn yet, can still use my computer (im using a celeron 2.2ghz with 512MB, 7200RPM disk, not THAT flashy!)..... I have only used Discrite discs so far, but I'm really really happy with my purchase. Works an absolute dream. Only 85 pounds from Micro Direct in Manchester.... I have copied all my retail DVDs, sold off the originals for cheap and it still paid for itself! :) (To Anti piracy people on VCDhelp.com: cmon, dont be a hypocrite, we all know why u REALLY want a DVD writer! haha) CloneDVD is my fave program so far, the compression from converting a DVD9 to a DVD5 and retaining the menus is great, and much more preferable than spanning them over 2 discs. | I've been using the OEM version (106RD) for a few weeks now, and am certainly happy with it. It's so far written to DVD+R (HP), DVD-R (Bulkpaq, Panasonic) and DVD+RW (Infiniti) at 2/2.4x without any problems, using Nero 5.5.10.54 and DVD Decrypter. I've flashed the drive's firmware to an official non-OEM 106D (http://flashman.rpc1.org/) then to the unofficial '1.07 RPC-1 + 2xDVD-R + 12xRip' firmware (http://pioneerdvd.rpc1.org/) and this works fine - amongst other things, it removes the annoying DVD-Video ripping speed limiter. One thing to note is that you will get an error with Nero if you try to use DAO/96 mode when writing to CD-R with this drive (see http://forum.rpc1.org/viewtopic.php?t=17119). The disc actually burns/reads fine, but the error prevents Nero from doing a verify if you have that option selected - therefore use DAO mode rather than DAO/96. It also seems from the above forum link that with this drive CD-R overburning is not possible with Nero, or is not supported (yet) but this is not an important issue for me. After all, you can fit 4.37 GB of data on a DVD-R so why bother overburning on CD-R? ;) It will 'only' write to CD-Rs at 16x I know, but this was the max speed my Philips CDRW48A (a supposedly 48x burner) would write to CD-Rs at before employing its 'seamless link' (burn-proof) anyway. This was with an 80 MB RAM cache and reading from a 120 GB Hitachi hard drive with 8 MB cache, so unless the Philips was particularly bad my guess is that if you go much above 16x on any drive you will have burn-proof sessions. I've noticed problems such as skipping and pops with discs where these technologies are used (both Philips seamless link and another manufacturers' burn-proof technology) when playing audio and MP3s in standalone players, and even with higher bitrate videos on PCs if several burn-proof sessions are close together. I therefore tended to only write CDs at 16x anyway on my Philips, so this limit with the DVR-106 is certainly no problem for me. I can confirm that at 16x the drive does not underrun/burn-proof at all. Unlike the earlier Ricoh and HP +R(W) drives, there is no way to change the 'Book Type' (bitsetting) for +R(W) media at present as this function is not supported by the firmware. Even if it isn't possible for the user to manually change it, at the very least I was hoping +R discs would be set to DVD-ROM by default, as they are with most standalone DVD+R(W) Recorders for best compatibility. Unfortunately this is not the case. It should be noted though that changing the Book Type isn't supported by ANY dual -R/+R drives at present, so if you want a dual drive you'll have to do without this feature anyway. This is a little annoying for me as I have an old Toshiba DVD Player which only accepts +R(W) set to DVD-ROM, not any other writable DVD media. I fortunately also have a Philips DVDR 880 DVD Recorder, so I can burn +RWs with the DVR-106 then use the Philips to perform the bitsetting change. This of course only works for the +RW rewritable discs unfortunately, not the cheaper +Rs. Overall a very good drive, probably the best dual format drive from what I've seen and been told. | Just sent back my Liteon 411s for this unit. Holy cow, night and day when it comes to these two burners. The pioneer is amazing and has worked perfectly on every project. Its quiet and fast while the liteon was slow and ruined countless dvds. These two arent even in the same ballpark. You wont regret getting this one. | Great, small problem! DVD-106, Nero 5.5.10.40, DVD-Player Panasonic A7 (one of the first most expensive heavily loaded players released, plays nothing but pressed disks according to Panasonic 14July2003) No problems burning video on DVD-R/RW and even playing them on the A7!! Even burnt cheap media at 4x eventhough rating was 1-2x! GREAT! DVD+R/RW is a problem for me on the A7. Memorex DVD+RW work 1 in 10 times, Verbatim DVD+RW dont at all (but they do burn and play on the 106). Possible reason, the 106 allocates a "Book Type" of "DVD+RW" to DVD+RW. This upsets some older players who want to see "DVD-ROM". Ricoh and Sony acknowledged the problem and released software/patch's to allow the Book Type to be changed. So far the Book Type on the 106 cannot be changed, hence compatibility issues may occure on older DVD-players using DVD+R/RW Comments posted by BludShotii from Other, November 15, 2003. | This is a nice drive. Every brand/format media I have tried has worked flawlessly. I have not tested the CD-R/RW writing functions (my Yamaha 52X burner is much faster at it so why bother). The only thing I do not like about this drive is that it does not have a front panel LED to indicate when the drive is actually writing to a disc.
