Toshiba RD-XS25

PostRegion code posted by newtom, July 17 2011:

The HDD went broken in my Toshiba RD-XS25SE recorder. I tried to simply exchange it to a new one (same type, same capacity), but the device wouldn't accept that. After Toshiba support refused to help I decided to dig as long as I find a solution on my own. (That's why it is a HACK.)

After days spent with a hex-editor, I found a method to initialize any HDD (20GB, 40GB and 160GB tested) using a PC, so that the recorder offers to format and use it.

The procedure is not that simple, but if some of you show interest I'd create an easy-to-use PC-software to pre-format any IDE-HDD to be used in Toshiba RD-XS25SE.

Then, needed steps for success would be:
a. Connect HDD to PC (via IDE-cable or USB-casing).
b. Run software. (Basic understanding of HDDs required.)
c. Open recorder casing, remove old HDD, insert new HDD.
d. Start recorded, select "Format HDD" from setup.

Cheers,
NewtoM
