In order to unlock/decode a SONY RDR-GX220 (or any of the XXX-XXX20 models from SONY) I used a PDA and did the following: 1) download the evaluation version of TV remote controller (http://www.pdawin.com/tvremote.html) 2) install on a PDA using Pocket PC or Pocket PC 2002 OS 3) install the following .ccf file (http://www.xs4all.nl/~pbonnet/sony.zip) 4) On your DVD recorder, using the official Sony remote, select the System-Menu option 5) On your DVD recorder, using the official Sony remote, select the Setup option 6) On your DVD recorder, using the official Sony remote, select the Options option 7) On your DVD recorder, using the official Sony remote, select the Command-Mode option 8) On your DVD recorder, using the official Sony remote, select the DVD1 option 9) On the official Sony remote, set the DVD1 option for the Command-Mode switch, under the sliding cover Turn on the DVD player, press 1 1 2 2 3 3 4 4 5 5 sequentially and you will get a TIMER OK message. Then again 1 1 2 2 3 3 4 4 5 5 and the player will go back in standby mode. Test Region 1 DVD. If it works, reset your commandcode from DVD3 to DVD1 again.
