I am really excited, the Palm Pilot hack described elsewhere has worked on my NS-305 (R2). Forget the UK rip-off 50 pound or US$70+++ mods - spend US$100 on a palm pilot, do the mod yourself and then you get to keep the palm pilot! Better still od hwat I did, find a friend with a palm pilot to help you. I know I am repeating information from elsewhere, but this is how I did it specifically for the 305. It is a variation on the region code hack posted by Nigel Shearman at December 22 2002: His hack is close but you need a power button too. I used a palm pilot with omniremote software. The software can be obtained from the following URL:- I also used the pre-made file: Sony_DVD_hack.pdb from: http://dev0_2000.tripod.com/ Bote that the pre-made hack in this file does not work for the 305! I tried it first and it did not work for me. You need to use the codes below. Any palm pilot will do. Create a new section for the DVD player and create 5 buttons. Number the buttons 1 -> 5. Use the advanced->databases [export category] to export the data to memopad. Sync you palm and paste the data into memo pad form. Use advanced->databases [import category] and import the updated config. Note you can also key the numbers straight into memopad if you want (I did it this way as I used a freind's Palm and he didn't have his sync cable). Then copy the power button used elsewhere in the pdb file into the screen you have just created as for the 305 you need to press the five buttons then the power button for the mod to work. Use the power button to toggle the DVD on and off to check correct operation of the software / Palm Pilot. Next with the DVD player in standby (no disc) press button 1 -> 5 either once or twice in turn e.g. 1,1,2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5 or 1,2,3,4,5 (in the excitement I forgot which way I did it!). Then press the power on button. If it has worked the DVD player will switch on and show "SUCCESS" on the display. Then press the power button once more and the hack is done. It is interesting to note that after I got the "success" display I tried to play a R4 DVD and it did not work. However once I powered off then on again from the front panel the mod worked - funny you had to reboot for the changes ot take effect - very MS! Congratulations, you now have a hacked DVD player that can play multiregion disks. I have a region 2 Sony DVP NS-305 and I have tested with region 4 DVD. This hack worked just fine on my region 2 Sony DVP-NS305. I used a friend's Palm VX running OmniWare, which I assume is an OmniRemote emulation package. Programmed the 5 keys as suggested, then entered 1,1,2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5 and got the "SUCCESS" message displayed. Then entered 1,1,2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5 again, and the machine went back to standby. Thereafter, I was able to play region 1 and region 4 DVDs. Thanks to all. | |||

Hi!! I did like above is told.. and got my DVD player regionfree. I bought used Palm Pilot IIIxe and transferred omniremote on it. I started the program and made 5 buttons. Next i copyed 5 signals from sonys own remotecontrol to my omniremote. Then -> advanced ->databases -> "export category". This made sonys signals i had copyed to "memo pad" in hex form. I started memo pad and find my "category-x" (x depends of your category name) and changed those hex codes to those codes which is told by josh. then "DONE". Went back to "omniremote" and find my "x" remote. then "advanced -> databases -> "import category". this update your codes from memo pad. Then just 1,1,2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5, SUCCESS 1,1,2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5, -> back to standby, and thats all. Thanks to Josh!!!! | |||

I ordered the bios upgrade chip mentioned in the top post here.It took so long to arrive that I had bought a Sony Clié SL10 in the meantime ,got Omniremote 2.07 and the pre made template from http://dev0_2000.tripod.com/ (I'd never manage to enter all those HEX codes into the Clié) ,and to my utter astonishment after a few tries tapping 11,22,33,44,55 I got the magic "Success" message from the 305. So now I have a region Free 305 and a Spare Bios .Just ordered a DAVS 550 .Won't make the same mistake this time !!!! | |||

Hi everybody, I just hacked my Sony DVP-NS305 that I bought in Switzerland 1 year ago. Apparently there are many ways to do this. The following worked for me perfectly. It is true that the hack for the Sony DVP-NS900, posted by Shareman, works also for the NS305. You will need to 1) download the evaluation version of TV remote controller (http://www.pdawin.com/tvremote.html), 2) a PDA using Pocket PC or Pocket PC 2002 OS and 3) the following .ccf file (http://www.xs4all.nl/~pbonnet/sony.zip) In fact, I verified that the button codes posted by Josh for this thread of messages are identical to those that are defined in the .ccf file. However, I didn't need a power button. All you need is to install the TV remote controller on your PDA, load the .ccf file and you will be presented 5 buttons from 1 to 5. The NS305 in standby mode, press sequentially 1 1 2 2 3 3 4 4 5 5 and you will get the SUCCESS message. Then again 1 1 2 2 3 3 4 4 5 5 and the NS305 will go back in standby mode. That's it :) I don't have a PDA so I asked a friend to install on his iPAQ the TV remote controller application and to load the .ccf file. | |||

Ok, I've been trying to use the remote hack using an iPaq, but i can't get it working. Tried this hack above with a different laptop. I used my Dell inspiron laptop, set the IR port to COM2 in the bios, installed the remote, added the remote.txt in to the folder where the remote was. opened the strange dos based remote, read the txt file, then pressed the five button one after another, and guess what, it worked, "success" was displayed. My only problem now, is that US use NTSC formatted dvds and my dvd plays these back in black and white. Basically i have to buy a new TV which supports PAL and NTSC encryption. Hi all, I am not an expert but I think that the reason why sometimes R1 DVDs are displayed in B/W is because the Sony DVP-NS305 outputs an NTSC signal, which corresponds to R1, when playing such DVDs. NTSC video signal is displayed in B/W in european TVs that only support PAL. I have an old but still very good VHS player that can output NTSC or PAL video signals. Guess what, when I connected the output of my DVD player to my VHS player and connected its output to my TV I had the R1 movie in colors. I think that there is no much we can do if the TV does not support NTSC because the Sony DVP-NS305 does not have an option to output PAL or NTSC. Am I wrong on this? Hope that you find a trick like I did in order to watch R1 DVDs in colors ... Pacho | |||

I can confirm that the palm pilot hack works fine. I've got the sony 305 (brand new) Region 2. Went to Argos and bought the palm 300 series (£150). Downloaded Omniremote and programmed the 5 buttons as listed on this page. The DVD switched on and displayed 'SUCCESS' - and it's now multiregion. I have since played region 1 and 4 DVDs - no problem. Many thanks to you guys who have published this on the page. I then took the Palm back to Argos and got a full refund - under the money back scheme, no questions asked. | |||

What's wrong with using Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V (copy and paste)???? Just do that on this section of text and paste the test into the editor on your PC. Then sync your palm. I have a problem: I have made my NS305 regionfree, and it worked fine until yesterday. I can still play DVDs from Region 1 and 2, but the connected Sony STR-DE485 amplifier shows "UNLOCK" in the display. It is connected via a COAX cable and the analog 2-CINCH audio cable. It only plays audio via the analog cable and when I try to set INPUT to COAX, it still only plays analog audio (or shows UNLOCK in the display). I have also connected my PS2 via optical cable, and it still works fine (DD5.1). What does the UNLOCK in the display of the amplifier mean? | |||

Just hacked a NS305 in the Carrefour. I used the codes with Omniremote 2.08 and a Palm Vx. YES, when we download the codes from the Palm back to PC they look different, but it's all correct. Region-hack using Palm and OmniRemote-pdb also works on Sony DVP NS330. Bought this DVD-player today and found out on the net that probably all or at least most Sony's NSxxx-players work with this hack. The sequence for the NS330 is 1-2-3-4-5 for 'succes'. Do 1-2-3-4-5 again and the player returns to 'standby'. Don't have a disc in the player. Didn't find the black&white/NTSC-problem, but that is either corrected in this player or because of me using a NTSC/PAL-compatible tv. Good luck | |||

Have tried almost all of the above on a DVP-NS325 (Region 1) with no success. The DVD does recognize the Palm Pilot's commands, but does not display the success message. Tried to play a Reg 4 disc with no success. Might be working on all NSXXX series, except this one. I used winsamp on an IBM Thinkpad A22m with its built in infrared on com2 and hit 11,22,33,44,55 while the unit was in standby and it powered itself up with the letters SUCCESS and then WELCOME, after hitting 11,22,33,44,55, it will power itself down again. The infrared must be built in, USB external infrared devices WILL NOT WORK! winsamp only works on com 1-4 whereas external USB devices tend to use com5 down. Hope this helps. Shaun | |||

I tried the hack posted by coadyj22 at August 06 2003. My iPAQ and the software he mentioned helped me making my Sony DVP-NS305 region free! Great tool!!! However: I expierence 1 little disadvantage with this hack: the sound of my discs is not available on my TV anymore... It does work on my stereoset (and that's most important as well as the 5.1/surround sound works fine), but if there a cure known for this issue, I'd like to hear it. Hi there. I have a Sony DVP-NS905V which was bought in Denmark, and this player can also be made region free. I used a (borrowed) Palm V with Omniremote trial version download from the Omniremote web site and the database file provided by http://dev0_2000.tripod.com/ At first the player didn't even respond to the codes sent by Omniremote. I tried pushing the buttons both 1-5 and 1,1,2,2 etc at about one second intervals without any result. But by pushing the buttons 1 through 5 rather quickly the player did respond by powering up. The hack didn't work the first time, though. I then did the 1,1,2,2 etc routine followed by the 1-5 routine twice, switching the player on and off manually on the player's power button in-between turns.....and after a couple of tries it finally displayed "success" - and it worked. So the thing does work, but in my case it took multiple tries. Furthermore, I did not experience any trouble with neither audio output nor s-video output as described by other entries in the forum. IT WAS EASY STEP 1 I downloaded WINSAMP from http://www.selen.org/sonydvd.html STEP 2 I put the software onto a floppy including the codes to hack. here is the hack you have been waiting for ! I got it on another site for the sony dvp ns355 I tried it on my 305 and it worked! Please note that you do NOT have to go out and purchase a more expensive one for all remote to enable your dvd player, the remote i used is over 2 years old and it has 4 different things on it eg tv, aux, sat and vcr. I used vcr mode on my remote and did the following; i hacked mine on the 29/01/06 and it works great. Hope this helps you please pass it on to anyone you know who may need it! Set Up Device DVD Player,(the dvd player code for the all 4 one is 0533) 1, Put a disc in player when it starts, press stop and put player onto welcome screen. 1, Hold magic button down until DVD button on remote flashes twice. 2, Press 994. 3, Press Magic button. 4, Press 1891. 5, Repeat steps 1 to 3, then press 2552. 6, Repeat steps 1 to 3, then press 0953. 7, Repeat steps 1 to 3, then press 2214. 8, repeat steps 1 to 3, then press 0795. 9, Remove disc from the player, then put player on stand by. 10, Press 12345 (success will be displayed and comes out of stand by. 11, Press 12345 (player goes into stand by and your player is now region free).
