Tried the usual 12345 hack on my DVP-M50 using a palm m500. The unit reponded to the codes turning off and on and giving firmware revisions but it failed to unlock the region. I'm fairly sure there must be a code sequence to unlock the m50 as the unit is available unlocked for only 5 ukp more that the standard model which sounds too cheap to be a hardware hack.

It seems that Sony DVP-M50 is the same as Aiwa XD-AX36 dvd-player. It also seems that there is a lot more activity among the XD-AX36 owners to find out ja region hack. As all the hacks to Aiwa XD-AX36 should apply on the DVP-M50 I recommend to follow all the postings about Aiwa also, perhaps if there is hack available to this machine it will be posted for aiwa first.

By using all the comments posted here, I found it better to buy the Player with the Multiregion already enabled, it cost £10 extra, but worth it! (from homecinemaheaven.com (UK) - they legally sell most popular players multiregion enabled/macrovision disabled)

Aside, had it for only a few hours, and performs well.

The hack for the DAV-D150 and DAV-SB100 also works for the DVP-M50.

Contact me at Darran@Slator.freeserve.co.uk for further details.

Region code hack instructions:

1. Create a directory called \RMTM0000\SCARLET

2. Create an empty file called KPJC19_1.DVD in this directory

3. Using a hex editor, edit the file KPJC19_1.DVD to contain four bytes in this order: 17 17 8C 00 . Save changes to the file.

Alternatively, download the file from http://www.math.uga.edu/~djb/html/kpjc19_1.dvd

4. Burn the directory \RMTM0000\SCARLET\ containing the file KPJC19_1.DVD on a CD-R. Use the ISO-9660 format.

5. Insert the CD-R to DVD player. Press 0 and Enter to enable the multi-region.

I did this on my Sony DVP-M50 player and it worked perfectly!

PostRegion code hack posted by john1247, January 17 2005:

Sorry, the forum messed up the full directory name in my previous post.

It should be RMTM0000 which has a subdirectory SCARLET. File KPJC19_1.DVD goes to directory SCARLET.

This hack worked just fine on my DVP-M50 but I had to press the pause key, not the enter key. However it does say this in the on-screen instructions.

Thanks for the hack!
