You can access the service menu on the DAV C770 as with the other Sony DAV series dvd players. Press and hold the stop and display buttons on the unit and turn the volume control to the right until the screen flickers. I have found a website that claims to sell a chipped remote that will convert almost all sony dvd players to multi-region once you have accessed the service menu. The web address is: www.shoyle.f9.co.uk/dvdchipsuk/sonyremote.htm The remote costs about Ģ55(approx $72) with a refund for return of the remote. Don't know if this is legitimate, as I can't buy it myself (I don't have a credit card). If anyone takes the plunge let me know if it works.

I did what MIDGET WARRIOR said, using the brazillian code, 2077 and the same code that Milton used and said that had worked (2044), so I tried to play a R4 only DVD (not a R1 and R4 DVD) and I got the same geographical restriction warning. This procedure donīt work !!!

This hack works with C770 indeed, thank you Karsten Thomsen: Region code hack posted by Karsten Thomsen at August 03 2003:Hi all try this is should work with the C770 also http://www.dvdrhelp.com/dvdhacks.php dvdplayer=Sony+DAV-s888, At this link you'll find this description worked from Karsten: Region code hack posted by Karsten Thomsen at August 02 2003:This guide shows you how to make the update with a regular PC equipped with an IRDA port. 1. Download the winsamp -package http://www.veg.nildram.co.uk/remote13.zip This innovative piece of software allows you to send standard home electronics IR signals using a PC IRDA port. 2. Extract the package onto a bootable DOS floppy disk. 3. Download this IR code file and place it in the same directory as the package above. This file holds the five necessary IR codes converted to the format used by winsamp.exe. http://www.selen.org/files/REMOTE.TXT 4. Boot up your PC from the floppy disk and run winsamp.exe. If your IRDA port doesn't appear as COM2 you may override this by using an appropriate command line switch. For example, use COM1 by running 'winsamp C1'. 5. Press the 'r' key to load up the codes into winsamp. 6. Turn on the Player. 7. hold down "DIsplay" "Stop" and "Prev" keys ("Mecha Lock" should appear), and while keeping them pressed turn the volume knob to the right. Service IN mode should appear. 8. Make sure your DVD player is in Service IN mode and your IRDA port is within range. 9. Run the IR codes from 1 to 5 by pressing Enter on each corresponding button. 10. Your DVD player should now display "DATA RESET". 11. Press the power button on the player remote. 12. Plug it out for 5-10 seconds. 13. Start it again, and play your region 1 ect. discs !! I'm glad to have found this hack from Karsten, because others are very sophisticated and in some cases expensively but not sure to work. You need a PC or notebook with infrared port (COM2 or LPT), the software WINSAMP and the file remote.txt, containing the reset code for reset the dvd player codefree. WINSAMP you'll find at the link above. This software is a great one from a fine old schooled softworker. The file is appearing to be censored at web meanwhile, the link doesn't work. But here it is for copying into the simple textfile "Sony Region Free Code 1",84,24,6,12,6,12,6,12,6,12,6,12,6,12,6,12,6,6,6,12,6,6,6,12,6,12,6,12,6,6,6,6,6,12,6,6,6,6,6,12,6,6,117,24,6,12,6,12,6,12,6,12,6,12,6,12,6,12,6,6,6,12,6,6,6,12,6,12,6,12,6,6,6,6,6,12,6,6,6,6,6,12,6,6,117 "Sony Region Free Code 2",84,24,6,12,6,6,6,12,6,6,6,6,6,12,6,12,6,6,6,12,6,6,6,12,6,12,6,12,6,6,6,6,6,12,6,6,6,6,6,12,6,6,118,24,6,12,6,6,6,12,6,6,6,6,6,12,6,12,6,6,6,12,6,6,6,12,6,12,6,12,6,6,6,6,6,12,6,6,6,6,6,12,6,6,118 "Sony Region Free Code 3",84,24,6,12,6,6,6,12,6,6,6,12,6,6,6,12,6,6,6,12,6,6,6,12,6,12,6,12,6,6,6,6,6,12,6,6,6,6,6,12,6,6,118,24,6,12,6,6,6,12,6,6,6,12,6,6,6,12,6,6,6,12,6,6,6,12,6,12,6,12,6,6,6,6,6,12,6,6,6,6,6,12,6,6,118 "Sony Region Free Code 4",84,24,6,12,6,12,6,12,6,12,6,12,6,6,6,12,6,6,6,12,6,6,6,12,6,12,6,12,6,6,6,6,6,12,6,6,6,6,6,12,6,6,117,24,6,12,6,12,6,12,6,12,6,12,6,6,6,12,6,6,6,12,6,6,6,12,6,12,6,12,6,6,6,6,6,12,6,6,6,6,6,12,6,6,117 "Sony Region Free Code 5",84,24,6,12,6,6,6,12,6,6,6,12,6,6,6,6,6,6,6,12,6,6,6,12,6,12,6,12,6,6,6,6,6,12,6,6,6,6,6,12,6,6,118,24,6,12,6,6,6,12,6,6,6,12,6,6,6,6,6,6,6,12,6,6,6,12,6,12,6,12,6,6,6,6,6,12,6,6,6,6,6,12,6,6,118 The file must have 1.128 Bytes with carriage return at last. The Region code hack posted by Peter Buscher / Karsten Thomsen definately works for the DAV C770 (european model, region 2, should be compatible for all newer DAV series models)if you have a Laptop with an infrared port (and no Palm etc for the Omniremote solution) 1. Download Winsamp here: http://www.veg.nildram.co.uk/remote13.zip This program will emulate an IR remote on your laptop 2. Extract the package onto a bootable DOS floppy disk. (this step is very important, I tried to use the software directly out of Windows before, but without success) 3. 7. Hold down "Display" and "Stop" and and while keeping them pressed turn the volume knob to the right. Service IN mode should appear. (there's no need to hold "Prev" and it doesn't need to show "Mecha Lock", when it shows "SERVICE IN" you're ready to go) 8. Make sure your DVD player is in "Service IN" mode and your IRDA port is within range. 9. Run the IR codes from 1 to 5 by pressing Enter on each corresponding button. 10. Your DVD player should now display "DATA RESET". 11. Press the power button on the player remote. 12. Plug it out for 5-10 seconds. 13. Start it again, and play your region 1 ect. discs !! This hack worked on the first try, I successfully watched two region 1 dvds after hacking it, in the service menu the player still shows as region 2, e-mail me for any questions.

Hi, ALL. DVD-player Sony DAV-C770 r1/r3/r2-Japan don,t have solderless upgrade (Example: PDA, DESKTOP, IRC, CD - R and etc....) in variant MULTIREGION, and NTSC and PAL-enable, and Macrovision OFF. The modification of this player is done only through special Sony-Data-service-cable and special firm software through plugs On main-board (plug CN-103) and on IR-board (plug CN-405).
