Not really a "hack" since it appears in the unit's manual.

For all of Polaroid's portable dvd players (PDV-0700, PDV-0750, PDV-0800 and PDV-0820), all of which are PAL/NTSC compatible, look at the last paragraph of "System Setup" in the manual.

The method is the same for each player:

1. Remove DVD disc from unit.
2. Turn on the DVD player.
3. Using the remote control, press the "setup" button and use the right arrow key to advance to the far right-hand tab entitled "Preferences"

Note: If there is a disc in the player, you will NOT see the "Preferences" tab!!!!

4. Enter code number 1379 and then use the up and down arrows to change the arrow code to match the DVD you want to play.

Note: I set my to "0" and it now plays both region 1 and region 2 discs without having to reset the region each time you want to watch different-region discs. I assume it will now also play regions 3-4-5-6 but I don't have any such discs to try it out.

5. Once the applicable code is chosen, press the "enter" button to save and the "setup" button to exit.

Unbelievable but all I have read about this unit turned truth. I bouth this unit at BestBuy 3 days ago and I was particularly looking for a dvd with good picture and capability of playing dvds from different regions. I read about a hack and it worked immediately. Unlocking this DVD was a breeze and took me 10sek. But this is not all the luck that I got. Having movies from Europe requires also multi-system TV with capability of NTSC and PAL. And guess what - my TV is NTSC only but PDV 820T converts signal automatically and all the PAL - Euro region movies played on with no problems! If you would be looking for any hint about such in the manual or on Polaroid's home page (www.polaroidelectronics.com) you finished being disappointed. There is no word about these great functions - what a poor marketing. Also manual was modified in comparison to what I read about past versions and there is no chapter under Setup any longer that would advise about how to change region. So, a hack has finally become a real hack.
All the comments about sound quality are just right. It could be better, though comparing Polaroid to other portable DVDs a conclusion is easy - there are no perfect ones on the market. And there is none that would replace power of your receiver.
So, PDV 820T fulfilled 100% what I was looking for and even added some extra, unexpected features along with great picture and flawless playback!
