Used WinLIRC on my laptop, with the simple IR transmitter diagrammed at www.lirc.org/transmitters.html using a diode "borrowed" from an old remote. Created a cf file using the hack provided by Peter for the DV-454 on 9 Jan 03, removing the trailing blanks at the end of each line. Transmitted the file once with the player turned on, after which it powered itself down. After power up, it will now play Region 1 and 2 DVDs, and probably all others. It does appear to change the video signal to PAL when playing Region 2 DVDs, and to NTSC with Region 1.

After making this patch, I discovered that the player no longer displays the picture with the correct aspect ratio. There is too much vertical height, meaning that wide screen movies aren't really in 16:9 format, but in something like 4:3, and some 4:3 movies also appear stretched vertically. The width appears to be correct, but the height is wrong. So the DV-454 patch creates a problem with this player. Anyone else experience this?
