I just bought a DVP5990 with firmware 37.08.51.27. Tried the hack but I could not found the Preference Tab.

Mis3 and all, in order to have access to the Preference screen, you need to have the CD tray closed with NO DVD/CD in it. If you have a CD or DVD loaded in the tray, the Preference menu is disabled. Just verified this myself. Then, once CD/DVD tray is empty and closed, apply the hack exactly as schavey posted it on June 22 2008. I have just followed his instructions on a DVP5990/37 I just bought today at BestBuy and it worked like a charm. I have firmware version 37.08.51.27

did you guys already check the manual? It has a note there saying some sort that it will permit 10 multiple region bounderies only. As I understand it, having a newly bought player and hack keyed in would obviously still permit all regions until on the 10th session that will eventually lock it to region 1 Just clearing things bec i myself is too eager to have my player region free.

Guys, I still dont understand - if I buy it do I need to change the zone every time I see a new movie or I can change it once and its set there forever? Thanks.

Thought I would ad a update. Running ver 37.08.51.27 Philips DVP5990/37 With no disc is the player, I turn it on. The first screen that comes up says "loading". After that is over, I press the "setup" button. The first screen I see is the General set up screen. I press the right arrow on the remote. I see the Audio Setup screen. I press the right arrow button again and I see the Video set up screen. I press the right arrow again, and come back to a "no disc" screen. At no time do I see a preference tab, or text, etc. I am assuming the preferences tab is on the screen and not on the remote -(I see no preference button on the remote). This is my report. I hope it helps someone. I am still trying to hack this baby. arrow

Hi hackers! I just received my new Philips DVP 5990/37, installed the V31 firmware update, then tried to hack the player to region free. I've not been able to access any of the three (Audio, Video, Preference) menus. The 'user manual' says to press the stop button twice, then the setup button - nothing happens. Anybody have any suggestions?

I accomplished this without problem on a DVP5990 with version 37.08.51.31 as stated. (The only thing is that you don’t press Menu to set the region and quit, you press OK.)

About the 10 multi border thing mentioned earlier. I was a little worried when I read this because I wanted a by a player I could make region free. After a little research I learned that the "10 multi border limit" meant that it would only read to the 10 session of a dvd that was burned by the user. Not a limit of ten times playing disc of another region.

Registered to confirm the region hack still works as listed by others. This on firmware version 37.08.51.31 Thanks all!

With a brand new DVP5990/F7 (manufactured August 2009) I applied the 1,3,8,9,3,1 hack and set the Region to 0. This all but bricked the player. It will still operate as a USB drive player, but no longer recognizes DVDs of ANY region. Perhaps Philips has modified the firmware to no longer allow this? Or I was just unlucky. No firmware updates are posted for this machine on the Philips site, but I found 1 older firmware version that the player did recognize, but even with different firmware it still doesn't recognize DVDs. It spins for a while before giving a "No disc" error. Just a heads-up that this hack may be hazardous to newly manufactured DVP5990s!

Freemantle, I think you are unlucky. I bought a DVP5990/F7 (manufactured August 2009) from Amazon a few weeks ago. Firmware version: 37.08.51.31 in the box. I just bought a new DVP5990/F7 from Bestbuy. To my surprise, it can read region 6 DVD with no problem (the only non-region 1 disc I have). The same disc was not readable by a Sony player. Being curious, I looked at the verification procedure mentioned in the above post. It said region 1. Interesting.
