Hi All, I just bought a Philips DVP3990 second hand in Europe and have so many US DVDs I wanted to be able to play on it so I did a little futzing and fiddling until I found a hack that worked. Basically, most of the Philips DVD hacks involved entering the number 138931 on the preferences menu and then using the up and down arrows to change the region code to 0, or region free. The problem is, not all Philips DVD players have the number pad on the remote control, so on any Philips DVD player I have had without the number pad, the following hack has worked: 1. Power ON the DVD player with no disc inside 2. Goto SETUP and go to Preferences (don't enter the Preferences menu, just nav to it from Setup) 3a. With Preferences highlighted , Press NEXT CHAPTER ">|" button 3b. still with Preferences highlighted, Press Previous CHAPTER "|<" button 3c. still with Preferences highlighted, Press NEXT CHAPTER ">|" button 3d. lastly with Preferences still highlighted, Press Previous CHAPTER "|<" button 4. The On-Screen Display (OSD) will show the current Region Code #If the OSD does not show the Region Code at this point, check your remote control angle and/or battery. 5. Press the Navigation Up or Navigation Down buttons to select your desired region, or select "0" for region-free 6.
