For Australian users only (region 4) Call Philips on 1300 651 993, listen to menu and press 2 for tech support, speak to the nice person (yes a HUMAN)and request the software update. Now whether Philips have this otion in other countries you will have to find for yourselves. I will try to post an update when the CD arrives.

****** UPDATE for Philips DPV 3050V************ CD received from Philips and installed. Tested with commercialy recorded Region 1 and Region 4 DVD's and both worked without any problems. Full but brief instructions are included with CD. Its no use going through the procedure because without the CD,nothing will happen. There is no option to set any region but why would you need to once it is Region Free?

I tried using the last mentioned link, the one that downloads the latest version of the philips dvp3050's firmware, but it didn't work. I installed it twice on my region 1 dvp 3050 and didn't work. The only thing that happens is the updated version of the firmware to 1.05 but the region remains as 1. Please I need an alternative. Reply

I tried all the above mentioned tricks and nothing worked. Under Setup, there is no Preferences option which one of the posts in a website talks about. Called Philips technical support in the US(1-888-744-5477). The rep insisted that there is no such thing as a hack for that model, and that there is no CD that they send out to open up the DVD player to other regions. She explained that if it's sold in the US/Canada, it by default is set to Region 1 and CANNOT be changed in any way. I am guessing that the reps are told to say so to customers. I have not found any way to make this work and I've been looking at websites for a day now.
