The procedure for DVDR 77 region code free setting, as described in another link here, does not work with the original remote control delivered together with the DVDR 77. There is no sign indicating what type that remote control, which comes with the recorder, is like. Where to get a RU880? For which other Philips items is this RU880 usually used? | |||

The following is a synthesis of many others' posts, together with some additional cautions and clarifications by me. My apologies that I have not kept track of all the contributors.... I found that the special remote control (or IR remote app for the Palm) was not needed. A special key sequence, one that was reported for some other, similar, Philips DVDRs, and the standard remote shipped with the recorder works fine. However there are a few places where it is easy to make a mistake. I've tried to make this as unambiguous as possible. 1. Switch on DVD recorder and make sure no disc is in the tray 2. Press the "SYSTEM" button on the DVD recorder's remote control 3. In the last (fifth) sub-menu of the "System" menu, change the "REMOTE CONTROL USED" from "DVD RECORDER" to "DVD PLAYER" 4. Store this change (important) by pressing "OK", then exit the "System" menu 5. On the remote control press "PLAY 1 5 9" (the display on the recorder will now display 11 dashes) 6. Now, using the remote enter the following 12 12 12 005 255. The last few digits won't appear on the screen, but don't worry. However, be careful to not push the buttons for too long, as they may repeat and you might get e.g. 2 2 2 instead. You should see the display blink slightly for each button-press here, even though the digits don't show up. 7. Press "PLAY" on the remote 8. Press the "Standby" button on the remote to switch off the recorder, wait for about ten seconds, then switch back on. Note that some instructions say "power off the recorder" or "remove power" or some such. You specifically need to press "Standby" on the remote. Do not unplug the recorder, or use the power/standby button on the front panel. 9. Using the remote control press the "SYSTEM" button. Change "REMOTE CONTROL USED" back to "DVD Recorder". Press "OK" to store this change, then exit the "System" menu. This will still not play "Region Code Enhanced" discs. To play them, repeat the above instructions, but in step 6 use (for example) 12 12 12 005 001 to set the recorder to region code 1. You can set it back to 12 12 12 005 255 (no region code enforced) later. |
