Do the following operations with remote control

Press "Eject"
keep the tray out
press "Setup"
go to "preference page"
go to "Country region"
press 1379

Now the region code menu appears. Change it to other values by pressing "up" and "down" keys on the remote. Select 0 for "all-region"

ENJOY :)

Just to add to the previous post: the hack for Malata DVP-500p posted here works flawlessly provided your unit is manufactured in September 2003 or later (check the back of your player). Tha hack will NOT work for the units manufactured prior to September 2003. Apparently, those are unhackable.

None needed.

I just bought a 500p Malata from FutureShop for C$79. If plays all my european region 2s right out of the box, as well as my Region 1s. Also plays DVD-Rs without a glitch. I have not even had to change my Region setting in the preferences menu. Outstanding picture clarity, and flawless PAL-NTSC conversion too. Can't think of any reason to pay more for any other player. The date on the label of this player is October 2003. I have read that you need September 2003 or later, and that earlier models won't do this.

I recently purchased one of these units from Future Shop (Vancouver, BC). I ran the hack and it works fine. I can play my region 1 & 2 DVD's without any problems at all.

This unit is also multi voltage and can play on PAL systems. So I can take the unit back to the UK with me if need be and continue watching all my DVD's there.

The unit is amazing value for money, it has progressive scan, Dolby 5.1 decoder and other things. Dam cheap compared to the named brands and it's multi region too :o)

Be careful with the models from Oct 2003. Some
people seem to report incidences of image and sound
"sticking" occasionally during playback. This does not
seem to happen to the Sept 2003 models. I grabbed
two of these at Future Shop (Canadian) and have had
no visible problems after a weekend of fairly consistent
usage just to be sure.

Also, if you get an Oct. 2003 model that ISN'T region
free out of the box, nerd-out.com notes that the hack for
the 500p won't work, but the hack for the Malata
DVP-393 will (!). Weird, that...

I bought an October 2003 from Futureshop in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. It didn't require any hacks and played both PAL and NTSC dvds without any problem. It played region 1, 2, and 3 as well as non-coded dvds straight from the box, with no modifications needed.

Just to confirm that my Oct 03 was region free out of the box _and_ it displayed the "freeze" problem on some DVDs (seems to be mostly animated DVDs so far). Gonna try and return it for another "vintage" today.
