I have a unit purchased from Best Buy in the US for just $90. With the disc tray open and player menu displayed, press the 'Home/Setup' button and then '9113' on the remote. A new item called "Configure Player" will appear in the menu. Select this item to view and change the region settings for both DVD and Blu-Ray. The setting is temporary and will reset to default when the player is turned off. I changed the DVD Region 1 default to 'Region Free' and tested it with Region 2 PAL DVDs. The player converted the output to NTSC and played them properly.

An update to my previous hack: It does not appear that you need to have the tray open - simply having no disc seems to be sufficient. Also, while the region resets upon power off, the "Configure Player" menu item remains, so you will only need to reenter the code if you unplug the player. IMPORTANT: I installed a firmware update via the network connection and the region-free capability was REMOVED! However, I was able to downgrade the firmware to an earlier version from Insignia's web site. My player had the following firmware when purchased: PKG_DVD_3_1_030_RC_14_BestBuy It has Netflix, Pandora and CinemaNow, but not Napster. The newest version as of 4/22/11, which DOES NOT have region-changing is: PKG_DVD_3_2_022_RC_27_BestBuy After upgrading to the newest version I gained Napster, but lost the 'Configure Player menu item, so region-changing was lost. This player can read firmware .iso files from a USB flash drive. I was able to downgrade using firmware and procedure from Insignia's web site. There are two firmwares currently on the site, marked as February 2011 and December 2010. I downgraded to the older Dec 2010 version, which reads in the player as: PKG_DVD_3_2_022_RC_14_BestBuy This version includes Napster, allows Region-changing, and adds BD Profile changing as well.

Sorry, typo correction - the December 2010 firmware (including region-changing) is: PKG_DVD_3_2_022_RC_21_BestBuy

The region-change "loophole" on this player has apparently not been completely closed yet. Received refurbished unit today from Best Buy (on line purchase). Powered the unit, pressed the "Home/Set-Up" button on the remote, entered "9-1-1-3" with the remote keypad, and a "Configure Player" button appeared on the menu wheel underneath "Settings" and "Quick Set Up". Selected that "Configure Player" button with the "Up/Down" aroow keys of the remote and pressed "Enter" on the remote. A "DVD Region - BD Region - BD Profile" menu appeared in the secondary menu wheel. Each of these items can then be selected with the "Up/Down" and "Enter" keys of the remote and allow the selection of the DVD region (1 to 8 plus region free) or BD region (A, B, or C), or BD profile (1.1, 2, or 5 not sure what those are). Please note that powering off the player automatically resets it to Region 1 for DVDs and Region A for BDs. However, the "Configure Player" button and menu remains installed. Also note that unplugging the player makes the "Configure Player" button and menu disappear. It then has to be re-installed as discussed upfront. |
