The ILO DVDRHD04 has a LiteOn drive inside. I tried the following Liteon 5001 hack on the Ilo and, indeed, I was led to a menu that allowed me to change region code to make the player region free: ---------------------------------------------------- Region code hack posted by hikhak, March 10 2004: found a hidden menu on the "Setup" menu on Lite-On's LVW-5001. you must do the following to open it. Enter "Setup" menu on the screen. Scroll down and highlight "Exit". While "Exit" is highlighted enter 2,9,6, and 0 and press "Enter". A hidden menu pops up and you can select your region. ----------------------------------------------------- I dont know if the following also applies to the ILO player, but a follow up to that hack was the following. I was not able to copy a copy protected DVD, so I am not sure how applicable this is. If someone could verify, that would be great: --------------------------------------------------- Region code and Macrovision hack posted by RowMan, March 12 2004: Just a note on the above "2-9-6-0" hack... This will enable the unit to record copy protected tapes AND DVDs! It makes the recorder totally ignore both CGMS/A and Macrovision. I have tested it and it has been found to work on units with firmware up to 1141. Also, copies from Macrovision encoded sources will also have Macrovision, but this does not affect the recording or playback ------------------------------------------------------

I would like to be able to upgrade the unit to a bigger hard drive. Is it possible?

Yes, you can upgrade the hard drive. I bought a DVDRHD04 on March 30, 2005 and the first thing I did was open the case and pull out the hard drive. The hard drive is FAT32 formated. Here is what you need to do. 1) Unplug your ILO DVDRHD04 2) Take the two screws in the side out and the three in the back out. 3) Take the 4 screws that hold the hard drive mount to the systemboard. 4) Unplug the IDE cable and power cable from the harddrive. 5) Carefully lift the hard drive mount out of the system and feed the IDE cable down through the slot. Take care not to damage the IDE cable. 6) Power off and unplug you computer. 7) Open the case on your computer and plug the IL DVDRHD04 hard drive into a power connection and the secondary IDE cable. 8) Power on your computer. 9) Create a folder on your PCs hard drive called ILO OEM Backup 10) Copy the 4.8 GB of files and folders from the ILO DVDRHD04 hard drive to the new folder on your PCs hard drive. 11) Shutdown your computer once all files have been copied over. 12) Unplug the ILO DVDRHD04 hard drive from the machine and set it aside. 13) Take your new hard drive (I bought a 120 GB unit) and connect it to your computer. 14) Boot your machine with a Windows 98se CD-Rom or floppy that has FDISK and FORMAT on them. - ** I was unable to format my drive as FAT32 using either of my machines, which had Windows XP Pro and Windows XP Home... Not sure why, but I had to use my Win98se CD to get the FAT32 format done. 15) When running FDISK, make sure you select your NEW drive and not your old one.... A) Create a primary partition on the drive and use ALL of the space. B) Win98se seems to have a logical issue with drives over 32 GB.... The size reported isn't correct, but the drive does format out to the true, and full amount. C) You must reboot between creating your FDISK partiion and formating the drive. D) Format the drive. You do not need /S for this. 16) Remove your Win98se CD or floppy and reboot into your PC's OS. 17) Copy the 4.8 GB of files and folders from your PCs hard drive over to the new drive. 18) When complete, shutdown and remove your new ILO DVDRHD04 drive. 19) Mount your new drive on the drive mount/cage. It mounts upside down and the IDE plug should be closest to the slit cut in the cage for the IDE cable to feed through. 20) Mount the drive/mount onto the systemboard and carefully feed the IDE cable up through the slot in the mounting cage. 21) Close up your ILO DVDRHD04 and put the screws back in. 22) Reapply firmware updates to ensure that they are present on the drive. - Time to Rock and Roll.... Enjoy. At minimum, this information will help save people the expense down the road of sending in their unit if the OEM hard drive fails... (As long as they have the original OEM files and folders to put onto another hard drive.
