This recorder is a copy of the Liteon LWV-5001 so it has
the same region-free code.
1. Power on with no disk inside
2. Press right arrow
3. press 8, 0, 0, followed by the region # you want
4. Press Enter
You will notice a change in the serial number. If you press
any keys and get the "No Disk" message on screen, you need to
power off and start again. It took me a couple tries.
Tested with region 2 disk.

History of the Gateway AR-230 was that it was manufactured by Lite-on for Gateway starting way back in 2003 (maybe before that). The first firmware version was a little buggy for which Gateway provided update 1139. Version 1139 worked fine, but some minor changes were applied later on and one what I would call major change to remove MacroVision option (on/off) from the hidden menu.

So if you have a firmware version dated later than 1139 (from 2003), the region hack may be on the hidden menu accessable by punching 2-9-6-0 into the remote per the intructions in other posts but the Macrovision turn off is removed. The AR-230 firmware can be overwritten back to the older version (1139) but that firmware no longer exists on the Gateway support site. I have a copy that I downloaded from Gateway when 1139 was still a download option and the Macrovision removed versions were not out there yet.

Now if only I could attach the 1139 version. I took a newer version of the firmware on the AR-230 back to the older version and it worked fine on one purchased by a relative.

Keep in mind there is a risk that if you switch to Lite-on firmware, you may not be able to go back to the Gateway version later on. Also some users have really struggled through the Lite-on firmware conversion process.
