No hack! I just put Region 4 DVD in the right-out-of-the-box player and it played just fine. That's the only non-Region 1 DVD I have, so I cannot generalize beyond this one disk. I did try to play this one DVD in another player and got the message "Wrong region", so I know the DVD is really regionalized. Here is info from player nameplate: Curtis Model 1053-B Manufactured Sep. 2009 (Region 1 mark)

Box says it is a region 1 player. It plays not only region 1 disks, but also region 2 right out of the box. Taken with the previous posting, it maybe that the factory did not put on the region lock. I need a player for both US and European disks. This player really fit the bill.

Bad news. On new production (manufacture date Oct. 2010), the device is no longer region-free. Also, the front LED is dim and there are jagged edges (artifacts) on diagonal lines in the picture. Here is another production change you can look for. (Not sure if this change was simultaneous with regionification.) Old: the yellow VIDEO terminal is LEFT OF the S-VIDEO connector. New: the yellow VIDEO terminal is ABOVE the S-VIDEO connector.

The device is no longer region free out the box (Manufactured date Sept. 2010) (Hart Canada 25$). Good News. The hack for model 1098 is working. Open the disc tray. With the remote, Enter 9, 9, 9, 9, (nothing appears on the screen) Enter 0 (no region) (appears at the top in a blue line). Close the disc tray. Plays region 1 and 2 and possibly other regions, also plays PAL on NTSC TV. |
