To play VCD in VRD974 (There is similar Zenith (LG) model)

Using remote with no disc in player
Turn on power, wait until "no disc" appears on display. Press "stop", "pause"
Enter the #'s 1,4,7,2. The "EEPROM" numbers should be
on the tv screen.
Make note of the fourth pair of numbers. Mine was 45.
Right Arrow over to the fourth number.
Place the cursor under the '5'. Change it to 7 by pressing '7'.
The VRD974 display should now read "04 47".
Press "pause", power Off. (TESTED)

If you change 45 to 67 - in addition you will receive 5.1 Speaker control option on menu. (NOT TESTED)

SVCD
If you change seventh pair from 20 to FE (to receive F you have to press an HOLD 6 on remote) - you will be able to play SVCD disks. (TESTED) and Progressive Scan will be added to menu (NOT TESTED YET).

The Eeprom hack above doesn't do much for regional coding, but I poked about, found the similar Zenith that the dude mentioned, and figured something out:

Power up, put in the disc that's for the region you don't want. Wait for the "check regional code" message (or whatever the exact wording is) to appear on screen. Click DISPLAY on your remote.

In the top left hand corner of the TV screen, a little box appears with the numbers in it. You have the choice - using the arrows on your remote - of selecting 1, 2, or 3. It was set to 1 when I put it in; I tried "3" - and suddenly the French DVD I was trying to play (in North America) worked. I haven't tried 2, and I'm not sure that ALL discs will play if you switch it to 3... but right now, I'm happy...
