Have had this drive for a couple of weeks. The drive does everything it is supposed to with no coasters as of yet (a couple of DVDs won't play in a standalone player, but that was my bad). Tried various brands and types of both CD and DVD media except for DVD+RW - all worked out fine (had to upgrade firmware before I could burn a DVD-RW with Nero though). Now, the software bundle that comes with it is a big disappointment - it looks and feels like it's been written by AOL and not Roxio. Not a big problem though - dig around on this site and you will find the right combination of tools that works for you. P.S. The 1.06 firmware upgrade everybody is talking about is located here: http://www.tdk-europe.com/dvd/firmware/TDKDVDRW0404N_106.exe Comments posted by anonymous from Other, June 22, 2003. If you buy one of these it needs to be flashed but good luck finding the program on tdk's website they appear to have removed it. If you are planning to use it with dvd x copy or dvd x copy xpress then you will likely end up frustrated as this drive rarely works with those apps. However that is a software issue which is supposedly being worked on by 321 studios. It hasn't made any coasters though. Comments posted by lordmelchett from Other, June 21, 2003. OK, so I'm going to eat a few of my words. I was frustrated at first because I couldn't get the drive to write to -R or -RW disks. However, this was using Nero. I had hunted around other forums and such and found others were having problems with this drive and Nero using firmware 1.05 writing to -R and -RW disks. Using the Roxio software that came with my 440N bundle I was able to successfully write to the Memorex -RW disks I was having problems with. So, the drive can write to the Memorex -RW's, or at least in my case, as long as you use the Roxio software. I hear there is a firmware update to 1.06 that solves this problem. Others on this forum below have mentioned installing the update. However, browsing through www.tdk.com I have not been able to find a firmware update for this drive. I found an update on a UK site that looks like it may work, but the model number is slightly different so I'm a bit paranoid about trying to install it. For those of you having problems with the Memorex (or other -R or -RW) disks, try using something other than Nero. For those of you who have upgraded your firmware, where on earth did you find the download? Comments posted by tedvz from Other, June 20, 2003. Rated this writer No rating. |

Haven't played with this drive too much yet. But, can confirm that the Memorex DVD-RW don't seem to take. Ugh. Should have double-checked this forum before heading to the store to buy a few DVD's to try out. The Philips DVD+RW that I used to burn a test movie on worked fine. Haven't tried other DVD-R or DVD+R media yet. But, definately avoid the Memorex DVD-RW on this drive...too many people here have reported problems with them. Got this drive last week was able to burn most execept for some left over princo's were spitted out. Found out that it's an nec1300n dressed up as TDK and that the nec1300n's firmware was hacked (Thankyou Herrie) and now support's most media. You guest it I flashed the TDK into an NEC1300N now my x1 princo's burns @ x2 Sky is the limit no more restrictions. I had nothing to lose just could not take these limitations anymore. Starting to think it's the Memorex DVD-RW (Prodisc) that's the problem. Have burned a few Packard Bell branded DVD+R with no problems and a Mirror DVD-RW (Ritek) seems fine too. 3 attempts with the Memorex - 3 failures and cannot even format/erase the disc after. Just got this writer today in UK. Listed as 440N on fascia, but reports itself as DVDRW0404N in hardware list. Comes supplied with Pinnacle Instant CD/DVD SE (& Instant Copy). No idea yet if SE software is limited compared to commercial product. So far managed to trash 2 Memorex DVD-RWs with it. Not impressed. Using Instant Copy to write a disc image the process hung on both occasions about 60-80% through. No screen savers or other apps running. Strange appearance to discs with obviously written to inner 60-80%, then a small gap with a further outer ring of written data, almost as though the write position had jumped a bit. These DVD-RWs are completely unreadable now (not recognised as media by drive) which rather defeated the point of testing on RWs in the first place! No rating yet. No idea if it was the Pinnacle software or a hardware issue as yet. Firmware was v 1.04, the link in the setup manual didn't work to get new firmware, but I just managed to find the 1.06 upgrade at tdk europe by linking to the product detail then support. Reinstalled the Pinnacle software too. Subsequently managed to burn the same disc image to a DVD+R (Packard Bell branded) - maybe a firmware issue, maybe the Memorex aren't compatible (they're not cheap). Strangely, after doing firmware upgrade I noticed that instead of 5 region code changes I only had 2 left after flashing - I hadn't even played a DVD in it or set the region code once. Initial impressions are quite mixed, glad I got the +R disc to burn but if this drive isn't reliable burning it'll be going back. I hope it was the firmware but will have to wait and see. Had this drive for about a month and have successfully burned about 40 DVDs (-R's, +R's, +RW's) with absolutely zero coasters. It is fast and has worked with all media I've tried, including cheap Optimums from Staples. Very pleased with this drive. I updated the firmware to 1.06 from TDK's website. Don't know what it fixed but the update went very smoothly. Comments posted by Brian from Other, June 07, 2003. Rated this writer 10 of 10. |

I purchased this drive over the new Sony DRU510a, and am glad I did. It rips DVD's fast as well as burns them without any hiccups at all. I was concerned that the lack of buffer memory would cause a problem, and honestly it hasn't. I can burn a DVD ISO at 4x, rip a DVD with DVD Decrypter as well as play MP3's without any problems. I have tested it on CompUSA DVD-R media, TDK DVD+RW media and TDK DVD-R media and it all works great. Comments posted by Rem from Other, June 03, 2003. Rated this writer 9 of 10. |

This drive is fantastic! Don't let the 2MB buffer discourage anyone from purchasing it. Bought the new Sony DRU-510 because it claimed to read DVD at 12X. This is absolutely not the case! It only reads at 8X. It took over an hour to back up a DVD using DVD X Copy Express (Returned it immediately). The TDK burner took only 37 minutes to do the same job! Have succesfully backed up 11 DVD's using Memorex +R media with no coasters. So what if it has a flimsy tray. I Picked it up at Circuit City for $300.00 after a $30.00 rebate. Update: I took 3 1 minute HQ video clips and using the Roxio 6.1 DVD Creator made a nice menu with moving video and 3 choices to select from. I then inserted a Blank TDK 4x DVD+RW disc into the drive and clicked create and burn compilation. Several quick minutes later I had a finished disc that I popped into my Samsung 421 DVD player and it loaded within seconds and played flawlessly. As I said earlier, this unit so far is a winner! I just purchased this drive yesterday and was impressed by the speed of my burn. I filled a 4.7 disc with about 4gig of data in around 12 mins or less. (I was not timing it exactly). I then poped that disc in my Dell and IBM laptop and it read with no problems. I have not experimented much with DVD Video yet but will in the next few days. So far this drive appears to be very nice! Comments posted by Eric from Other, June 02, 2003. Rated this writer 9 of 10. |

1 hour later my toshiba sd-2710 went belly up. I replaced it with the Piooner dv-250 and it plays everything I have burned with the TDK on all sorts of media. I am very pleased with this burner so far. I did the firmware upgrade already. I can't tell that it did anything. Rip speed has hit 4x once in smartripper since the upgrade so it at least didn't cripple rip speeds. Comments posted by JHunnicutt from Other, May 21, 2003. Rated this writer 10 of 10. |

bought at compusa after 2 days of problems with the dru-500ax. Installed this drive and burned a dvd immediately. I am very happy with it so far. Also, the sony was limited to 2x ripping speed......i saw the TDK at 3.6x just before I went to eat. Comments posted by JHunnicutt from Other, May 19, 2003. Rated this writer 9 of 10. |

I burned 10 DVD+RWs (x2.4) and 2 DVD-Rs (x2.0) without any problems whatso ever. DVD+RW were cheap MeritLine ($2 each) -R were Verbatim I burned movies and everything was recognized and played correctly by my Apex 5131. Burned about 10 CDs at speed 16x - NO problems Failed to burn 4x DVD-R that was included with drive. Possibly due to screen saver. Comes with Roxio software. I bought this from Dell for about $240. Works fine with all the Verbatim Discs I tried so far, both + and –R, 2X for DVD-R 2.4X for DVD+R and 4X for DVD+R and 2.4 for DVD+RW. I had some older discs around from CDrecorder.com they were –R and the TDK 440N would not recognize them the same thing happened with some older Memorex DVD-R too. Would like to know what brand media other are using with this drive, Thanks Comments posted by WAN from Other, May 17, 2003. Rated this writer 3 of 10. |
