Pros: It may actually burn a disc. It comes with some software. Cons: Everything else. Doesnt support Nero 6. No customer service. Bad Burns. I originally bought this drive to back up movies and data. HORRIBLE. It came with Roxio - I didnt install, I use Nero. Tok me 2 seconds to find out Nero wasnt supported. Went online to there tech site and initiated a chat with a rep, VERY unhelpful. All he said was he only supported what came in the box. I asked about the nero problem he said "we only support what came in the box", I asked if DVDxcopy worked with the device he said "we only support what came in the box" I asked about.... he said.... Get the picture. I saw a Memorex Dual-x at the same store and decided to trade it for that. I 1st called Memorex tech support - picked up within a few rings!!! He answered all my questions about Nero, DVDX, and others before I even bought the machine!!!!! I was astounded. Too bad TDK - if you could have even 'tried' to answer my questions I would have worked through any problem and even waited for a firmware update if necesary. Ohh well - I recommend the Memorex Dual-X!! Comments posted by East from Other, September 08, 2003. Rated this writer 3 of 10. |

occasionally, i've been getting some "power calibration failed" errors (maybe 1 out of 10 discs) with the ritek 4x dvd-r burning with copytodvd, but if i burn at 2x, then it burns ok. anyone else have these problems? i know you can get the power calibration errors with cheap media, but have other people gotten this with the riteks? thanks. - The Pinnacle Software bundled with the drive is very unstable and poor quality. - The 440N doesn't burn a lot of cheap DVD-R's, I've tried 3 different brands and no one functionned. DON'T BUY THIS!!! Comments posted by Josquin Rosset from Other, September 02, 2003. Rated this writer 1 of 10. |

i bought this burner from dell (just under $200 with coupons and rebates) and it's great! so far i've used khypermedia dvd-r 1x and ritek dvd-r 4x with no problems. i think i'll stick with the ritek 4x since it burns at 4x and works on my dvd players (apex and toshiba). i've made a few coasters, but mostly due to my fault. i've backed up my own dvds using... 1) smartripper - to rip the dvd onto my hard drive 2) dvd shrink - to make the dvd fit onto a 4.7gb media 3) copytocd/dvd - to burn onto media (yep, i'm the only person in the world without nero) :) but, this seems to work great for me! Guees what... I had the same problem with Memorex DVD-R's, but no more! I used the firmware update and now the unit records them even with Nero. And for all americans: don't worry, use the UK firmware, it does work on the 440n, even if the UK drive is 404n, I have a 440n and did the uk upgrade on it this morning (saying to myself "what the heck, let's see if it works!!") and it upgraded in a jiffy. After rebooting, I tried to record a DVD-R (impossible to do before, I had a "bad command on field error in Nero") and... the drive works GREAT! The only change is that now my drive ID on the computer is 404n instead of 440n, but no functionality change. Comments posted by Juan Jose Velez from Other, August 21, 2003. The burner works fine as long as you stay away from Memorex -R & -RW's. I thought it may be Pinnacle that was causing my problems, but if I throw in a -RW and try to erase/format, it doesn't like it. I can use the Memorex +RW without any problems. Comments posted by scgregg from Other, August 19, 2003. Rated this writer No rating. |

I was having trouble with this drive at first...turns out that it was the Memorex 4x media that was causing the problem. I am using firmware revision 1.06 and it can burn on Verbatim DVD-RW and TDK DVD-R at 2x with no problem using Roxio's software bundle. Also burned at 2.4x with some generic DVD+R media. I am having some issues with this drive and the VIA IDE miniport drivers, as they seem to conflict with the drive when installed...still trying to figure it out. Ripping speeds are very nice, can usually rip a fully loaded 9gb dvd in about 35 minutes. Just hoping a firmware update comes out that supports more media soon. Will try upgrading to 1.07 soon. I have just recently bought this writer and burned the included tdk dvd+r media with no problems ,I got a tube of 25 datawrite classic red dvd-r discs ,I have tried to burn with the included pinnacle software and nero 6 with no luck on windows Me based system . ON WINDOWS ME Nero would only try to burn at 2 speed with no luck and spat the disc out , same thing happend with pinnacle instant cd , I have tried various other software with no joy , As nero and pinacle both use the same driver it was to be expected !!! ON WINDOWS XP I have upgraded to WINDOWS XP and neither the system or nero see the disc ????? !!! SO IM STUMPED IN KNOWING WHAT TO DO .. TDK TECH Tech support was free and quick but had no idea why it wouldnt burn the disc and was going to look into it and let me know heard nothing as of yet .. Can anyone recommend good dvd media for this burnner thanks . Comments posted by john from Other, August 05, 2003. Rated this writer No rating. |

Hi Folks. Bought this burner on July 30 and returned it on July 31 because of incompatibility with Princo 4X discs. Some softwares do not indicate speed. Would have kept burner another week if I know that firmware 1.07 was out so soon. Too late, I bought a Pioneer A06 because it works with Princo. Those two have basically the same innards, aka NEC 1300, but different faceplates and firmware. It is too bad that TDK did not have Princo writing codes from the start. The money goes to Pioneer now! By the way, my Pioneer burner works like a charm straight out of the box. What more can one ask for? TDK, I hope you guys are up to the task by the time I upgrade my burner. Good luck! Hi folks! I bought this at a local Costco for $429 Cdn. and am quite pleased with the results of my (limited) burning experiences. There is one MAJOR (for me) problem though. BitSetter does not work on this drive and so I can't view any DVD+RWs on my Toshiba SD-6200 or SD-2200 drives. I probably would have bought another burner had I known this in advance. :-( Roberta Comments posted by Roberta from Other, July 26, 2003. Rated this writer 8 of 10. |

I have recently purchased this dvd burner 5 weeks ago, and I very happy with it. It comes with the Roxio CD/DVD 6 Software(very easy to use). I have backed up several movies in my collection with no problem.I have even backed up Blade 2 with Pinnacle, which inluded all the menus. This player kicks butt. Got it a week ago. I had set my mind on NEC 1300 but since it's release in Sweden was delayed again and again I bought the TDK since it IS a NEC 1300 in a different cabinet. So far I'm quite satisfied. It burns fast and smoothly except if you use Nero. And YES I have firmware 1.06 so I can burn DVD-R(W) but not if I use "Disc at once" in Nero. My TDK came bundled with a whole bunch of Pinnacle programs. With one of them: Instant CD+DVD, the TDK burns everything on anything. To bad the user-interface is totally crap in the pinnacle program, but when it in the end, does what I want (that is: burn my DVDs excellent) one shouldn't complain. If it had been region free and 100% compatible with Nero I would have rated it 10 - superb. Comments posted by Fredrik from Other, July 11, 2003. Rated this writer 8 of 10. |

This is a kick-ass multi format burner. For the price you cannot beat the quality plus it is the only black dual drive on the market. I have successfully burned all data types and with many types of media. I prefer the TDK DVD-R and DVD+R. If you bought it before June 17th, you will need to flash it. It works well with most software packages but NERO balks with dvd-rs if its not flashed with 1.06. I bought mine at dell for 229.00 after rebate. I would highly reccomend this to anyone. Also, dont bother loading there software. Use the burning software you are the most comfortable with. Nero gets my vote. Cheers. Comments posted by Thumper from Other, July 04, 2003. Got this drive the other day and so far works great. Used the inclued roxio easy cd creator software to make a data disc of about 6 divx movies and works. Also installed dvdxcopy 1.52 and dvdxcopy express 2.5.0 so far i have used the express version to make a backup of my old school dvd which plays great on my apex dvd player. I used a maxell dvd+R for both projects i have done. Specs of my pc are xp pro, 512mb ram, 100mb hd, 1.7 ghz amd athlon xp. Comments posted by Fuel from Other, June 29, 2003. I have burned 9 DVD-Rs 2 DVD+RWs and 11 DVD+Rs and so far none have failed using TDK Media and Memorex Media. I think this is one of the best dvd burners out there. I bought this over the new Pioneer A06. Comments posted by Gullil from Other, June 25, 2003. Rated this writer 10 of 10. |

Working great! Got the 1.06 update and I can burn everything using Roxio or Nero. I'm able to view the movies on my player (Philips 724) nicely. Just took me a bit to figure out I needed the 1.06 update to get the -R/-RW to work with Nero (update not necessary if you stick with Roxio), and that I needed to burn in ISO mode, not UDF to get the movies to work properly on my DVD player. Can't complain, everything is working great... Comments posted by tedvz from Other, June 23, 2003. Rated this writer 9 of 10. |
