Ok, I've had a little time on my hands and want to let you folks know what I've found during tests with media and the DD0203 burner. First of all, I've flashed firmware to 2.16, have not tried 2.17 because of reports that it kills the drive.
Media:
I've been able to burn at 2x on Hi-Q cheapy DVD-Rs, and playback is good on Apex and Sony DVD players. The Hi-Q media was rated at 4x, but I was unable to obtain that speed. I've also gotten 2x on Optodisc 2x DVD-R media and worked in both DVD players. One drawback on the Optodiscs - once the data in on the disc, you can't view it when placed back into the drive, so additional backups cannot occur, although the DVD players seem to read the disc OK. Have not yet tested any 2x DVD+R media.
In order to obtain 4x burn speed, I got that speed using TDK 4x DVD+R, Memorex 4x DVD+R, Maxell 4x DVD+R, and of course the included That's DVD+R. Have not tested any 4x DVD-R yet. All of the DVD+Rs at 4x run fine in both Apex and Sony DVD player.
So, it looks like with this burner, you get what you pay for in media speeds. If looking for quicker burn times, you've gotta dish out the dough and get name-brand media. If you don't care about the burn speed and can settle for 2x, you'll benefit with the cheapy media, but try a sampler pack first and MAKE SURE YOU CAN READ THE DVD after it's been burnt. It's a good thing I didn't get rid of my Hi-8 home movie tapes after the burn on the generics, I would've been screwed!

ATallJohn

I've got an Apex AD5131 DVD player. Haven't found anything it wouldn't play. I've got DVD's from China, VCD's, SVCD's, etc. Best of all it's a 3 disk changer and you can get it for $60-$90. Recently bought a second one from Wally world for $60.

I have had a working drive for about 2weeks now. And have Only made 1 coaster which is probably the media (piodata )
I flashed to the 2.17 firmware immediatly and have had no problems, Used harddrive burn with no problem, Has read every disk I put into it. I am currently using Media test packs to test the diff types of media and works great with Mediapro, dvdpro, ritek, optodisk, tdk, and of course the brand that came with it That's DVD+R.
With the exception of the That's DVD+R that came with it I have only teste DVD-R as It seem this would be most compatible with my Stand ALone Players.
I read in the other comments that the firmware is incorrect, well since I have had no problems with it I will not change it until there is Update beyound 2.16 avail.

I just used my OptoRite DVD+/-RW drive and it burned flawlessly. Wont work with Memorex or Sony discs, but the Phillips +RW disc worked flawlessly

I just got my writer a week ago and are still trying to get a disk that it likes that dont cost the earth. for the pc its seems fine apart from a DVD-RW that went and recorded ok but will not reformat again any ideas??
I could do with a list of disks that work ok on a Cyberhome 402 DVD player. any help on this would save time and money (that I dont have much of)

The drive works fine for PC backups
cheers Allan

I am updating a previous post. I purchased Memorex 4x DVD-R media and it works great. I have firmware 2.16 installed. It burns fine at 4x. It also plays in Apex AD800, AD1500, Panasonic DVD-RV31. Any suggestions on a good site to purchase these spindles from ?

I got my Optorite on 19 Aug and it came with firmware 2.09 so I flashed to 2.16 upon installing it into my Dell 8200.
Everything went fine except I had to wait a couple of days for some DVD media to burn.

I did burn a couple of CDR’s for the kids and it worked ok.

Then I flashed to Firmware 2.17 and everything went weird.

I tried to flashback to 2.16 but could not. I used a program to clean my registry and now everything is working well.

I’ve burned TDK-R and TDK+R to back up DVD movies and they work flawlessly. No problems to report since the firmware flash to 2.17. I was worried and was going to send it back to the vendor, but now I think I’ll Keep it. This drive is fast. The programs I use for DVD are DVD Shrink 3.B5 and DVD descriptor and DVD x Copy and of course Nero.

I got my DVD burner 2 days ago. Installed it immediately. Plays my dvds perfectly. I tried ripping a dvd using smartripper. Fails midway. Same thing happened when I used DVD Decryptor. Also tried DVDShrink. Finally ripped on a different machine using DVDSrink, then copied the dump onto the machine with the DVD burner, and burned my first disk on the DVD+r which came with the burner using nero. Got a perfect copy. Don’t know why couldn’t rip using this my new drive. Looks like it is picky on what dvd it can rip ;) I say this because, yesterday I was able to rip 2 movies easily using this drive. Still need to test the HD-Burn feature. Sounds cool!!

The only downers I think would be the eject button which has a slow response and the software bundled with the drive.

Overall the best deal available. Best combination for features and price. Got it for $155 from newegg with free shipping.

Go get yours!!!

What does this mean ??

If i upgrade back to 2.16 my drive will stop working ??

Comments posted by Chris from Other, September 03, 2003. Rated this writer No rating.

Ladies and gentlemen

Do not upgrade your DD0203 drive the the circulated 2.17 firmware, which has now been removed from the Optorite site. This firmware was published by mistake!! it is for the DD0201 drive!

Posts are flying all over the net to try and get their drives back to 2.16 which is proving somewhat dificult. Some drives are now only useful for parts if you catch my drift.

Thought you should know as I have upgraded and find myself high and dry and Optorite are not responding to customers mails, infact they have not even explained the error and given advise on their website.

I will post a solution if i ever find one

Just got a working drive and burned my first disk last night. So far I am quite happy. updated to 2.17 firmware. Backed up copy of Heat with DVDshrink and Nero 5.5.10 and played great in both my standalones and both my laptop and pc player. Only problem was that it would only burn the MediaPro disk at 2x (it is 4x media ).
Not sure why anyone has a problem with button looks and works just fine. I think people expect it to respond to just a touch rather then a push. Whatever
Just recommend you avoid Livewarehouse.com their customer service sucks beyond belief. And entirely to slow.

Got this drive couple of weeks ago.

I immediately updated the firmware to 2.11. I'm using Nero 6.0.0.9, with DVDDecrypter and DVD Shrink.

So far, I've backed up 5 of my DVDs on ACCU/DupEZ (LeadData) 4x DVD-R media, no coasters yet. However, these media only burn at 2x, so a movie takes about 30 minutes to complete.

I've also used Ritek 2.4x DVD+RW to test burn, worked fine. I did have a problem playing the Ritek on my Apex 703 because I think it's an older player (it worked fine on my Apex 1100W), but they DVD-Rs of the same movies worked fine. BTW, I found that you don't have to manually reformat the DVD+RW disks, it can be done on the fly by the burning software. Just add whatever to the disk, then burn.

The Eject button is a pain, you have to push it pretty hard to get the drive to open. I now use software eject function instead.

Overall, I'm very happy with the purchase, the drive works quite reliably. I just ordered some sample media packs, to see which media will burn at 4x, will report back later.

I've had it for a week now. I have burned both video and data DVDs with no problems using Easy CD Creator 6 and Pinnacle Express. I used Fuji DVD+RWs (video) and CompUSA el-cheapo $1 DVD-Rs (data). Love it!

Great drive. I like it alot and I have had no problems with Burning using Nero 6.
But the guys at Optorite should fix the "Eject" button it´s the only hang on the drive.

It´s a ..... 9 with a breeze ! (1 down for the eject button)

I bought this drive a couple weeks ago for $159 at a local small computer store. I immediately updated the firmware to the latest v2.11 before anything else. I installed the latest Nero 6.011 since I'm used to Nero and didn't want to bother with the bundled software. Nero 6 and INCD v4 both work great with this drive. I have successfully burned video DVDs on Memorex 4x DVD+R, Imation DVD+RW, Meritline DVD+RW, Verbatim DVD-RW. I also was able to create a bootable ISO DVD data disc with a DVD+RW and INCD data discs. I found DVD+RW is great for data discs since it only takes a minute to format even the first time, a DVD-RW takes an hour to format!
I have absolutely no problems with the eject button, it works every time I've pushed it. It is a small button compared to other drives and the drive takes a few seconds to open the tray. I have noticed the drive seems to take 10-30sec to recognize some types of discs.

I got OptoRite DD0203 10 days ago. I see in the comments, that there are many who used the drive with PRINCO DVD-RWs. I got 5 PRINCO DVD-RWs Ver 1.1. The drive does not see the DVD-RW. I used Fuji DVD+RW and the drive sees it and I was able to make a DVD+RW backup. I use Nero 6.011 Ultra.

Got this burner a few weeks ago and has worked perfectly since day one. Upgraded the firmware to 2.11 with no problems and made multiple backups that work great on my "stand alone" dvd players. I would definately recommend this drive to anyone who is thinking of buying it.

I havn't actually recieved my burner yet (should arrive soon, can't wait). I just want to say a few things about some of the comments I have read here.

People who are having probs with the HD-Burn (amazing little invention) should download the latest firmware for the burner http://www.optorite.com/support.htm (currently at ver 2.11). This will solve alot of the CD-R media not working with the HD-Burn.

This 2.11 firmware will also make Nero Info Tool see and use the 8Mb buffer (a huge advantage over the more costly Sony / Pioneer units).
Also, to make the HD-Burn more compatible with your DVD-Rom / CD Writer, etc, check your drive manufacturers website for a firmware update there too. Sanyo, the creators of HD-Burn, are pushing other makers to include the ability to read these 1.4gb discs.

It's a shame that users are required to make a couple of changes to make the most of the Optorites features when it comes right out of the box, but it's a satisfying feeling when it all works great.

As soon as I've recieved mine and tested it throughly, I'll be posting my reactions.

I got my black faced Optorite a week ago for $163 w/ free shipping from NewEgg.com Bought a 100 Princo 4x dvd-rw's for $84 + shipping from YesBuy.net 29 dvd's Burned so far and not a single problem. I'm using DVDShrink & CopytoDVD software. It takes about 80 to 100 minutes to Rip/Compress and burn a 2 hour movie.

If you want a cheap way to back up your dvd's or hard drives you can't go wrong with this little jewel. I highly recommend this burner and the software that I'm using with it.
