Bought this last week for USD120. Installation was a piece of cake. Win XP instantly recognized the drive. Used Nero6 to back up some files on Memorex +R. Worked like a charm. No issues. Took about 18 minutes to write about 4.3gb of data. Then tried writing to CompUSA brand -R disc. Worked beautifully. Since then tried out about 8 dicks. Only once data back failed. I used Nero Burning ROm instead of going through the wizard. So I guess I made a mistake or the default setting on Nero was wrong. Then i switched to wizard more and everything has gone good so far. Great Drive! Comments posted by raven from Other, October 13, 2003. Rated this writer 9 of 10. |

Bought this yesterday for £108inc VAT from MicroDirect, Manchester. Came with Sonic MyDVD and B's Gold (for RW packet writing, etc). Initial firmware was V2.09. Installed all software, formatted a Verbatim DVD+RW, tried writing to it, but DVD drive froze, had to hard reset PC. This DVD+RW is now unusable. Upgraded firmware to V2.16, very easy to do in Windows, clear instructions from optorite.com. MicroDirect sold me a 25 pack spindle of Infiniti 4X DVD-R white lable disks, which at £37 was not the cheapest. However, I've already burnt 5 full films with the Sonic software, and perfect every time. I've imported movie files produced in Premiere, both analogue and DV captures, and once burnt to DVD, these play excellently on my Sony DVP-NS405 DVD player. MicroDirect told me that these Infinitis have very good compatibility with DVD set top players. Oh, and despite being white label, they are purple dye underneath. Instruction said to set to DMA, but when I checked, it was already done (maybe from the previous CD-RW that I removed). So in one evening, I've gone from 'never tried it before' to 'totally sorted'. Thanks Optowrite. I'll try another DVD+RW when I can afford to pay for another !. Hopefully it was just a firmware thing. Only gripes; Sonic MyDVD only has 'auto' write speed, you cannot select X2.4 or X4.0, so I'm not sure what speed it's choosing. I'm not bothered, as long as it never produces coasters. This DVD writer is not listed on Sonic's supported website, despite Optorite shipping the drive with their software. MyDVD instantly states drive details, firmware etc, so Sonic should update themselves a bit. I may upgrade to a better authoring software though, MyDVD is a bit limited. When you press eject, there is 4 second delay. I guess it just waits until it's ready. It runs nice and quietly, no stupid vibration noises like some drives. I've heard lots of nightmares about DVD writers. Well this was no nigtmare. I'll give it a 10 straight away. the writer is very good althought the cheaper brands of (a-b grade disks) only write at 2x, you pay four what you get, but i have also tried true A grade princo disks but theyt still only write at two speed all ritek dyes will write at 4x please check dye colours first as there are many brand like datasafe/datawrite who put out two or three types of dye ritek, princo and prodisk. optowrite have only recomended ritek based dye's. I must agree with the lack of supported software and the dye colour is down to crap firmware , but i have heared that a few other writers have the same problem Comments posted by fred from Other, October 13, 2003. DD0203 with fv 2.16 Really bad burner ! Sometimes freezing or closing windows (98 or xp) when accessing DVD Can't even read dvd he burned ! Accept most of DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW i tried Power calibration error with some disc doesn't accept SONY DMR47VDA and VIVASTAR DVD-R Huge problem of compatibility with stand-alone players (i burnt more than 30 disc before understanding the way it works on -R) If you can't read your DVD with another player, try to burn a DVD-R as an ISO Multisession not closed (it works with my LENCO DVD17) but DVD+R are still not readables (if someone can help !) The compagny support doesn't answer and if they answer (had 1 returned mail for 10 posted), they tell you that there's no problem with the burner or the firmware (ha ha ha !!!!) and you should change your dvd or your player DO NOT BUY THIS THING ! This drive is particular about its media. Sony DVD-R 4x would not even recognize under Nero or any other burner program. I popped in Verbatim DVD-R and it burned with no problem. I haven't tried any other DVD media. This is a good dual format drive and I really enjoyed the price paid. Comments posted by MikeS from Other, October 10, 2003. Rated this writer 8 of 10. |

bought this drive from livewarehouse for $120 free shipping and I am very happy with it. I only seriously tried +R media from Memorex and that works perfectly fine (4x) both data and video. Comments posted by fracture_x from Other, October 09, 2003. Rated this writer 9 of 10. |

I bought this product for it's Multi-write features. It replaced my Pioneer A04. I primarily buy TDK media, and my drive will not even initialize upon inserting a TDK DVD-R. The same goes for SONY DVD-R. TDK +R media works fine, but it is not as compatible with my standalone player. I find it upsetting that I will have to special order media, and I can't just go to my local STAPLES store to buy what they have in stock on the shelves. This drive has lots of promise, i really like the HDBURN feature. I'd like to know what the plans are to support more "top brand" media. Oh, also - i cannot seem to re-format a DVD-RW and be able to burn to it. It seems to me that only about 1/2 of the promised features. It works great as a +R/+RW burner, but really lacks -R/-RW support. Waiting for the next firmware revision, so that i may be able to use the TDK and SONY DVD-Rs that are sitting here. The update was the beginning of August. I started confident about this drive, and now i'm getting concerned. By the way, i have NO eject button problems. I got the drive yesterday, and backed up a copy of a DVD movie using DVDDEcryptor, and Nero 5.5. I used 2x Memorex DVD-RW media. My first DVD burning experience. The main hiccup was that after installing the drive, I installed Pinnacle Instant CD/DVD, and this rendered my DVD drive useless. Wondows would no longer recognize the drive, I believe because the Pinnacle installs some phantom SCSI CD drive emulator, and this was preventing my Optorite from being usable. Anybody else have this problem? I'd like to use the Pinnacle SW, but am stuck. Thanks. Comments posted by Shawn from Other, October 09, 2003. Rated this writer No rating. |

You can get a windows interfaced flash tool from optorite.com. Also, for those who flashed to the mistaken 2.17 firmware and couldn't flash back to 2.16, try flasing from a bootable floppy. Got the DD0201 for $122+tax from a FatWallet deal. It is a great burner except for the fact that it is really picky on the brand of media. Burned 3 DVDs tonite with 3 different softwares. I've been using this drive for a week now. Got this the other day for a nice £100. I ripped and burnt two films which both worked fine, or at least it seemed so. After getting about 60% through the disc on playback. It just locks up both of my DVD Players. Both discs were burnt at 4x on "BulkPaq 4x ORANGE" DVD-Rs. I'm trying again at 2x this time, hope things work, or i'll be pissed with 50 blank un-usable DVDr's. Anyone got some cheap Media recommendations for a UK buyer? Excellent burner. I've had no problems. The button thing is soo freakin silly. I can't believe people complain about this. Its so petty. I use firmware 2.16 with no issues in Nero 6 at all. I was even able to burn a CD for the Toshiba SD1600 with Memorex DVD-R. I got mine at Newegg for a great price. Comments posted by J.P. from Other, September 30, 2003. Rated this writer 10 of 10. |

For those getting the "Power Calibration Error" attempting to burn a DVD with this writer, you need to set the DMA access mode OFF and use the PIO Mode 4. This has no effect on read/write speeds but it prevent a few coasters. Comments posted by Stephen J Land from Other, September 30, 2003. Rated this writer 8 of 10. |

While dvdrhelp was down I have solved a puzzle (with some help from google)which has been plaguing many Optorite users. There is some kind of small bug (which we must hope will be solved with a future firmware update after 2.16) in the way the drive handles single session finalizing. The result, even with Nero 6, is DVD-R discs that cannot be read by many players, both DVD-ROM and standalones. (No problem with DVD+R.)Here is a workaround. In Nero, choose UFO/ISO mode to write the video. (Drag all the needed content to a VIDEO_TS folder you create. Include an empty AUDIO_TS folder for good measure.) The important step is to choose the Multisession option and ignore the warning message that Nero 6 generates. Many folks say that standalone players can't read movies made in multisession mode, but my Sony (3rd highest rated presently on this site)has no problem. And my Panasonic RV32 also plays discs made this way even though it is very fussy! Neither can handle Ritek discs produced by the Optorite in standard DVD-VIDEO mode. Hope this helps some folks out there. Comments posted by David Griffeath from Other, September 30, 2003. Rated this writer 8 of 10. |

I recently purchased this for $135 with shipping. I wasted three brand anme discs to start with before I decided to upgrade the firmware to 2.16. I think it started with 2.06. After that was done I have not had a problem yet. I have burned usxing Maxell DVD-RW without a problem. I have also burned with TDK DVD-R. Now the mission is to find good cheap media that works. I have a Panasonic RP56 and Pionner DVC505 DVD players and they both play the burned DVDS with no problem. I am using CopyToDVD and Nero to burn. I have tried DVD X Copy Express and DVD95COPY for movie ripping. They both work fine after upgrading the firmware to 2.16 as mentioned above. I love it so far. Mostly very happy with this burner. Installed easily enough and worked straight off - even the notorious button seems fine on mine. After reading this forum and others you get a bit paranoid - you begin to wonder whether any item you buy will work properly. Such gripes as I have: 1) Have not yet persuaded HD-BURN to work. Apparently I need to invest in one of a small list of v high quality CD-Rs, but worryingly the supplied B's Recorder software does not identify writer as supporting HD-Burn! Nero 5 attempts to do an HD-Burn but reports "power calibration error". I'm not too bothered as I can just use DVDs for bulk data storage - even though cost per meg is higher. 2) UDF format with DVD+RW seems to work OK provided you do the long format with verify. The quick format apears to work but the disks sometimes prove troublesome to read afterwards. Comments posted by Dennis from Other, September 23, 2003. Rated this writer 8 of 10. |
