| I've been using this dvd writer for nearly 2 years on my Asus laptop, this writer is good at cd burning, but when it comes to dvd-burning and reading,i think it's totally crap. Mine's firmware is TI51 but i found the firmware upgrade, and upgraded it to TI94 but nothing changed. I wasted 5 dvds to burn a data dvd, it burns but it doesn't recognize them. http://www.toshibaer.com/firmware/index.php?path=TS-L532A/ this is the place where i downloaded the upgrade, i hope it helps you.. | My TS-L532A came with a Gateway laptop and I have so far found mixed results. Imation 8x DVD-R's seemed to burn fine but would not play correctly on most DVD Players. I then switched to Philips 8x DVD+R's and I have had great success with them. Once I ran out of those I decided to try Memorex 16x DVD+R and have had no success. They seem to burn fine but no player will recognize the disks. Not sure if the problem is the write speed or the brand. Comments posted by RD from United States, April 27, 2006. | Got mine in Acer Aspire 3023 laptop. So far big problems with drive. Burned fine Verbatim 8x DVD+R disks, but Verbatim 16x DVD+R is no go when burned at 8x. Failed to burn iso-image to disk, burned 90% and then "write failure, try another disk". Other one was burned with success, but i have no drive which could read disk without freezing, jumping all over the disk etc....Luckily i have desktop PC with NEC burner :), don't have to waste disks with this piece of crap. | I have had a few issues with this drive in that I have to drop the burning speed to 4x speed for any dvd+/-r media inserted, as if you burn at 8x, the disc becomes very jumpy when played back either on the drive, or on any dvd player. On a couple of occasions, it has detected that Verbatim 8x dvd-r was only a 2.4x disc, so took 25 minutes to burn. Also, burning Datawrite Titanium 8x dvd+r Printable discs (Prodisc R03), it gets to about 75-95% complete, then locks up. Discs burn fine on my desktop pc with both a Sony DW-Q30A and a Benq DW1610 drive, so I can only suspect the drive does not like the discs. I also hate the fact that there is no firmware update available for this drive as it is an OEM drive, and have contacted Samsung, who say I should contact the supplier of my laptop (Novatech). | 3 Maxell 8x DVD-r's at 8x didn't work well. 1 failed during burning process. 2 others have problems being read. 1 Maxell 8x DVD-r at 4x didn't work well. It has problems being read. 1 DVD-RW at 2x worked ok. Haven't tested any DVD+R's yet. So far this thing is a piece of crap and can't beleive my new Gateway 7426GX comes with this thing. Thankfully still under warranty so I can bitch. Although quite disappointed that I have to go through this trouble... | I cannot recommend this writer for DVDs. I am able to burn and then read them in OTHER DVD readers, but NOT in the L532A!!!!! This is not good for backup and restore. I have tried Maxell and Laser DVDs which work 100% in 2 of my other burners one an OEM in a Dell PC. I understand there may be some quality control issues with this model. | I got this drive in my laptop from gateway. does not do dual layer even though everyone says it will. mine is a dual format. cant find any firmware for it anywhere and gateway doesnt have any other firmware... | I've got the Samsung TS-L532R with my HP Pavillion laptop - only writes DVD-R @ 4x on all the media I have tried, Samsung don't supply firmware upgrades for the HP OEM version - and HP haven't got anything :-( Comments posted by John from United Kingdom, August 10, 2005.
