| My laptop came with this piece of crap. It won't even reliably write CD-R and I haven't dared try it with DVD (this is with branded media that's faultless on my desktop). Upgrading to the latest firmware has not helped. I've just ordered a new drive (Sony DW-D56A) to replace it and this thing goes in the bin. | somehow i cannot read some region 2 original dvd but i can read pirated dvds no problems. the writer came with my fujitsu siemens laptop. it makes some noise as well and i tried to flash it with the 1.03 firmware but found out later that mine is 1.04. i dont know why it cannot read certain dvd. | A few comments here since I have this reasonably crapy drive too. First off, there is a firmware from Dell C112 which fixes several problems with the drive including the DVD-R reading issues. It does not 'fix' the lack of DVD-R writing support (of course). You can find the new firmware here: <http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/format.aspx?releaseid=r90352&c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19>. I just tried out the firmware posted by Pinky in the previous comment and it seems to be working very well. DVD-R writing works (at 2x) and so far I haven't had any problems with it. However my one worry is that this firmware is based on the B107 firmware revision for the drive and not the newest one (noted above). I'd be a lot happier if it was based on the newest version. | I upped the rating due to me being able to update the firmware to a beta version offered here http://tdb.rpc1.org/#GWA4040N the b107 version works on the gca-4040n and changes it to region free (gwa-4040n)and now i am able to read and write dvd-r, the new media still only burns at 2.4x but hey, at least i now have all the functionality of the gwa-4040n Comments posted by pinky_IM from United States, January 30, 2005. | the only reason i gave it a 2 is because it does burn and completes how fast, well 2.4x unless your lucky to get old media, new media only burns at 2.4x, dell inspiron 8600 that is almost out of warranty, and i plan to give dell hell due to this drive, it used to burn all types of media at 4x and now, unless i use old media it only burns at 2.4x. btw the comment above about the book type dvdrom is correct, the feature is not available with this drive and secondly yes it doesn't read dvd-r. many drawbacks, why do these companies sell this crap, damn myself for buying this laptop with this drive. one word SH*T ....don't buy it and make sure your laptop doesn't come with it. | This is not good drive. I bought it in my HP 9110 notebook. There was a problem with reading DVD-R media (computer restart after media insertion). | Don’t buy this drive (LG GCA-4040N)! In general, why we should suffer because some stupid fights between giant companies that made 2 standards? Let’s not but any DVD burner or computers with DVD burners that can burn DVD-R and DVD+R. this DVD burns only DVD+R. I have a DVD player that can play only DVD-R and my laptop came with this burner that can burn only DVD+R, now you see the irony? There is a way to burn DVD+R medias as DVD-R, it called changing the “book type”, but this drive’s firmware doesn’t support that and there is no firmware upgrade in the horizon. Don’t buy! | According to the tech at HP that I spoke with last night. This drive can only write a 2.4x not the 4 listed here. We have tried 3 different name brands and none of them will burn at 4x.
