| Rebadged NEC ND-3500A. Won't write or read faster than ~12X as this is the sustained transfer limit of USB 2.0. USB2 boasts that it transfers at 400mbits/sec, but this is the burst(initial) speed. Sustained speed is approximately 100mbits/sec or 12-15Megs/sec. Thus, it is impossible to burn at 16x(22Megs/sec). Nero Drivespeed peaks at 12.03x. So far had 2 coasters out of 4 using memorex dvd-r 4x disks(CMC Mag AF1) using both nero and the provided speedyCD software. Burned 10 more at 2x with no problems. | I needed an external burner and this was one of a few that were available to me. Before buying a "backpack" I borrowed a friends and threw everything at it - CDs and DVDs, movies, apps, music and data. I used 3 different burning applications without any problems whatsoever. The USB2 plug worked great - no slowdown at all - fast connection through USB2 on 2 different systems. It was during these tests that I discovered that these were NEC. By the time I got around to buying one the DL16x were available - ran same tests with 4/8X -R, +R/RW. Again no problems. For an EXTERNAL, being able to conveniently swap/plug into various systems, I think these are great for a good price (externals can be expensive).
